Yeah... the server died. It's getting weird UDMA errors on the primary drive. I hope to god it's okay ...
I have two brand new hard drives (to set up RAID) and need to get them in there, reinstall the OS, and rebuild the wiki server. I *DO* have it backed up! (supposedly? I hope? It's SUPPOSED to be working) so it's making me very nervous.
Needless to say this is an all day project and isn't going to happen until Saturday, because I have massive amounts of schoolwork to finish up by Friday night.
I appreciate your patience...

(P.S. how's the speed been on it? okay? I have very decent 1mb upstream or so bandwidth. If it is good enough I would prefer to keep it at home, but if it's slow I can move it to my hosting account.)

I hadn't noticed any speed issues, personally. Seemed to be working just fine!

Its been good. I noticed the images died yesterday about 2pm US Central Time...it started having issues. I am currently -7 GMT. Server rebuilds are a pain...maybe I can help out with some of it and get you a good server backup program that I use here at the company to literally make an exact duplicate of the hard drives. I do this so that if BOTH of the Raid drive are hit at the same time, I can just do a hot swamp into another server of the same config and hopefully never miss a beat. Kick me a PM if you wish...I am an IT Director in the mundane world and have worked on computers for going on 33 years now...when I started it was punch cards and no storage and a whopping 4k of RAM...yes..K not MEGS or GIGABYTES...lol. No floppies...cassette tapes if you were lucking...no online nothing...unless you had access to the ArcNet.... And yeah, i'm freaking old..shaddup...*8P

Well...
UGH.
I put in the two new hard drives and GRRRR. I cannot get Ubuntu (Or Mint, which I was going to go for) to mount the image on DVD to do the install. My reading suggests that both of these problems (UDMA errors on drive access and failure to mount DVD during install) point to a faulty motherboard or power supply.
Okay - so the motherboard and processor is 5 years old roughly! Time for new. This system actually gets a lot of use these days as a workstation / internet kiosk for my two girls doing homework and writing papers in Google docs. So....
I need to order a new motherboard / processor and ugh. Yeah. You get the picture.
On another scary note, neither primary nor hard drive will show up on my laptop at ALL with my handy dandy SATA drive connector. But the failure of both to show up points to a problem with the drive connector (you BETTER PRAY!) cause ... while I have had my primary AND backup drives fail at the same time once - lost all my family pics that way - if this happens to me *** AGAIN *** I would SCREAM!
And blame Disco.
BUT SCREAM!
And thanks for your effort to help but... barring dropping off some new pretty at my house (!) .... what can you do? It kind of needs to BOOT first. Once it boots tho you can help set it up maybe! And look at all my pron.
Pictures of Xavi, actually.

I was bored at work today, so in the event of a worst-case disk failure I took a look at the available cached versions; Archive.org has an active 2010 backup, which is rather worthless, but Google Cache's version (as well as Bing's cache) is much more recent with a November 2011 time stamp. Warrick public releases have been busted for a while now since IWBM changed their layout and Google updated their API, but I managed to get it to skim reasonably well under ActivePerl for a trial run of 20 Wiki pages (any more than that and you'd likely get your IP tempbanned by Google for automated requests). Should all local copies be forfeit, you could most likely reconstruct most if not all of the content (minus the images) once they address the Warrick issues to fix Bing retrieval, which has much more lax rules on autoqueries. As far as I recall there was a MediaWiki script that could reconstruct the wiki formatting from HTML scrapes, which would ease the reintegration process considerably. Thanks for being awesome and putting forth the dedication of hosting the Wiki, it's been a great help for new players like me!

Thanks that's helpful... Ordering some hardware today. New motherboard / processor / ram. It'll take me awhile to get it all going so please be patient! In the meantime I'll see if I can get the data off those drives and maybe find an intermediate way to get it up and going. Does anyone have any experience running a little server inside a VM on a Windows 7 PC that's externally visible? Any recommendations? In some ways it'd be nice to set up the new machine that way since this compie is one that my kids use all the time for school. Also probably easier to maintain a hardware independent version of the server that way. In other ways, it might be best if the kids just use it for web!

I don't have any experience doing so, but it is possible to do. I'd say use vmware for it, I've more experience with that, though I just haven't used VMs in many a month. I want to run that sort of concept from a server in home... once I can actually get to making it.
I wish I could be more helpful, but my VM-fu lacks discipline -_-

My recommendation is get some hot swappable bay for $20 USD or so, do a Raid 1 setup and then if you lose a drive, you got a backup one right there. If you want to do a VM setup, go with VMware in the Windows 7 environment. If you have professional on up its also got build in capabilities. What size hard drive do you use and what is the setup (CPU/RAM/HDD etc)? Here is a good step by step article.

Well it WILL be a server class ASUS motherboard with an AMD Phenom II X4 and 8G of that server DRAM when it comes! Probably by the end of the week... About four times the umph it had - but umph was never a problem for it anyway!
I am going to try setting up a VM Linux system on my current compie and see if I can get THAT to see these hard drives.
I'm not sure whether Drive Utility on a mac would even list the devices even if it couldn't read the format, or if the SATA adapter I had is bad or what. I'll keep testing.

Merry Christmas! The amiawiki should be back up now - with a new motherboard behind it and the original drive (which was fine, and is now backed up to a new drive, since the backup drive seems to have actually failed!) It will be going down on Saturday for some maintenance while I move it to a new hard drive and OS - I'm going to try to get it up and going under Linux Mint. Shouldn't be too hard.... I'll also upgrade the version of mediawiki at that time and/or see if there is a package for it. But the good news is it's up, and should stay up unless I have a power blip that outlasts my UPS. The machine it's on right now won't actually finish booting without a little manual help... Which will get fixed on Saturday! Anyway, I hope everyone is well and gosh gee golly I sure do love you guys! *HUGS!*

I know I know! All you pansies! I'll restart it when I get home this evening. Amiawiki's about to move to a new home on a *real* server too. I might as well stop putting that off - and I have space for it! Miss you all! I'm getting a bit of an itch to drop by and say hi, anyway! - Wiggles

I think it's down still, and I've been working on moving it to the new server. The database is 300MB, so that's kind of big, but it should be up sometime tomorrow. Sorry for the delay, but I'm tired, and my sweetie wants me to come snuggle in bed. Yay! mmmm.

It seems to be up and running now, and boy was that ever a pain in the ass. GRR.
It's running on a conventional web server now and no longer in my den. XD! Which means it will be faster. And it got upgraded to Mediawiki 1.19.2 as well, which was where the ass pain came in to play... That and uploading a 300mb database and I don't know how many thousands of images in that thing (LOL!)
I am not quite sure if all of the new extensions are working properly, or if you can actually upload any images or not!!! But I am sure we'll get any bugs worked out. Please post here if something is broken - I'm TIRED! And again, like last night, am overdue for joining my love - in BED!
SNUGGLES!
-- Wiggles
PS I just updated the DNS so if it doesn't work right now for you, ping amiawiki.shatuga.com and you should get the IP 216.180.241.18

Also, a general note - We're getting a lot of spambots on the Wiki again, so I'm being pretty diligent in blocking new usernames. Basically, if you create an account on the Wiki and don't immediately create or modify a page in a way that clearly isn't spam, I may very well block your name on the principle of 'better safe than sorry'. If this should happen to you, send me a PM via the forum (i.e. here) and all will be forgiven.

from within function "SearchMySQL::searchInternal". Database returned error "145: Table './shatuga_amiamw/aw_searchindex' is marked as crashed and should be repaired (localhost)".

Please note that I am moving the amia wiki back to a host that has somewhat reasonable performance. It'll be down for a little bit today!
Thanks!

Have you ever thought of giving the Amia wiki a permanent place to stay?

It has a place (HAH) but ... I thought I had found a cheaper place. Alas, cheaper place was a crappy place.
Lesson: Stay well away from those shared hosting reseller accounts that are variants of beachcomber.net / $10 per month for a shared reseller account. The ONLY reason why I went there initially was on a recommendation from someone I trust but ... after I moved everything, I discovered that that company operates under a gazillion domains and resells the same crappy shared service.
So I'm moving it back to hostgator - which is still not terribly expensive for a reseller account ($30 / month or so I think is what I pay) but I've not had too bad an experience with them, and their support is pretty good.
I'd run it on my own server - but I don't want to have to manage a server for the 10-or-so different web clients I have. Alas... lesson learned!
Stay tuned!
