Giving this another bump.

I think Barak Runedar and Bendir Dale has a hell of a lot of RP opportunity for people to undertake. There's a lot of unique things you can roleplay as well, why not a Runecaster? A Cleric of Moradin? A smith, miner, inventor, gem crafter... Why not something unique all together? A ranger who uses a Dwarven Hound or even a Mega-Bison as their companion? A Dwarven Monk to make use of Barak Runedar's Monastery? Or perhaps jump in to some more stereotypical roles of a Dwarven weapon-master? A Barbarian perhaps?

If you're struggling to think of a character you can get in to, try thinking Dwarf. There's a mountain of lore out there for you to discover, I'm sure it'll be a fully immersive experience!

I hereby nominate Yossarin as the official PR spokesman for all dwarf kind for his dedicated and outstanding service in making dwarves sexy once again.

But in other news, the dwarves are having a serious lull in numbers in the last few months, we had a few key characters absent which has caused a bit if a stagnation in the stunties happenings. So there is plenty of room for some fresh members to get involved if anyone wishes to try something new: make a dwarf!

As the OP asks what can we do to lure new players?

My first ever character in NWN was a dwarven cleric. He was involved in a campaign. I miss him sometimes.

But I didn't make a merry dwarf... I made a pretty un-merry, death seeking masochist dwarf....

Dwarves a varied people, some drunk, some absolutely wasted. I think you've found a good niche in a dwarf who appreciates the old dwarven ways of personal sacrifice.

I'm shamelessly lifting a broad concept from another setting, I'll admit. But I've gone out of my way to make it fit with the Forgotten Realm's d0rf lore. Think I came up with something interesting. Just kinda feel like he needs to be leveled up a bit so he can hurl himself at big nasty things regularly.

I've really been tempted to play a dwarven female in the past, but I can't get past how horrible all the female heads look.

Oh, it's not the portraits that are the problem. There are quite a few that look great- especially the one with the red bob. It's the actual heads themselves.

Dwarves tend to lean a lot towards comic relief, An' wen ye be givin' yer laddie summat like 'ere ridiculous accent, ah cannae see how anyone be takin' 'em ser'ously!

My favorite webcomic sums them up quite well in my view

In this game, a lot of people like to feel... attractive, as well, maybe that's not the right word- at least identify physically with their PC somewhat. Not too many people go for extreme characterization and play a kobold or goblin, I feel like a dwarf is in the same league as making a goblin- very stereotypical and you're probably not planning to get a ton of flirting. Halflings have correct proportions and can be 'cute' but dwarves are always rotund and the game engine always makes them 'ugly' even if they have 30 CHA.

I do think that an extremely LG dwarf paladin or a very CE dwarf, with a normal voice, correctly roleplayed, would be menacing as hell though. Take that dwarven tankard and beat an orphan/tiefling to death with it.

About as much as we had previously, really.

I'm surprised we haven't seen a surge of Dwarves, Elves and Hin in general.

Hard to surge when the server is down (ooo topical)

I'd argue it's because NWN is more a game people have to look for these days - they no longer stock the diamond edition for a tenner in physical game selling locations for example.

This thread is NOT allowed to fall onto the second page, I forbid it! I'mma necro fondle this thread a bit to say thanks to the folks that have made dwarves recently or our friends and allies who've gotten involved in Barak Runedar and dorfy or citizen RP.

Again, we're not rule or lore mongers, we can help fill in some gaps about any pantheon or culture knowledge and the like as most of us has to look it up and research anyway! haha As stated in another thread our biggest draws are a large community (700ish NPCs) all 100% player controlled and driven through Barak Runedar's council. Want to be involved and appreciated? Come to us my children! Attend Council meetings as you will, help us decide the paths we take, lead a project, provide resources for the community. Many projects are getting underway, lots to do!! PM me if you wish more information.

Thanks to the newcomers or old folks that popped back in:

On the question of how to lure folks to play Dwarves; occasionally you get to go out and slay an ancient dragon. How's that for incentive!

Lol.

And no, it wasn't Peter Jacksons Crap.. More Tolkien's insightful writing for kids. Back in 81 when I read it.

( I face palmed for Britain after watching Jacksons the Hobbit. No.. Just No.. In some Barrow somewhere an incorporeal Tolkien is plotting I tell you, at least I bloody hope he is.)

Captor has kindred souls with the Dwarves, he was sadly born too tall and thus has to cope with this disability. (Probably why most of his Golems are smaller than him/Dorf sized!)

I think we have quite a few of us simpletons. Ha!! But a good skald we haven't really had around much since miss Gloria departed a while back. Could be a little niche to fill there for us when it comes to our festivals/ceremonies/gatherings, you know, cause bards rock. Jus sayin'.. 8)

Hopping in here again real quick! A fast thanks and shout to new beards Reddok's ran into. Makes a dwarf get a lil misty eyed seeing so many kin about. I've talked recently with some old guard of Barak, no excuses lads! You wanna play, get yer asses on and play! No hard feelings, and we'll get you caught up as we can and welcomed. Spoke with some that have never played a dwarf and is cautious about lore, details, etc. I think the dwarf society and pantheon is one of the easiest to get to know. We'll help you OOC and IC, or razz the hell out of you, maybe both.. well it's probably both.

Thanks again to my fellow dorfs new and old! Faction or not. Here's that quick shout.. And there's more I didn't scratch down the names of!

Rugnar (back to the land of the living!)
Rabbie (now known as Rabbit! Sorry man I think it's gonna stick. haha)
Cruven (just met him)
Cormag (just met him)
Torim (met once briefly)

A couple kin Red's met he's put the big question mark on, but still playing a dwarf!
Dusk (you smell something?)
Rugnnar (the other one!)

Yeah about that RP opportunity. Had my new dwarf in the big BR and stood by emoting to give the other PC's time to say hello (Oi, *grunt* in my general direction etc) and I got nada, nothing, zip, ziltch on a couple separate occasions I'm sad to say.

So, what's my reason to hang around when my sad dwarf doesn't even get a grunt? Help me out here mate.

Barak Runedar is a trade hub on B, I can't say every passerby there will talk to you but any Dwarf would probably be more than likely to talk if they're not AFK! We meet every Sunday at 2pm GMT if you wish to join us.

Appreciate the post. I see a little cleric get together so I'll give that a go in between having a tour of Amia in general. It'll be good to see the general interaction that the dwarves have to help my RP. Hope to see ya soon.

I am going to start an alternate beginning soon for dwarves and Barak Runedar.

So anyone who wants to make a new dwarf might want to wait 2-3 days until I have worked the details out. Maybe you'll like them and want to join. If not, independant dwarves are of course always just as welcome in Barak!
