Latest update here!

Previous update:
So it's been a while since we've talked about progressing to EE and a lot has changed since our last time. You guys have questions and I have some more answers.

We'll start and end with the same question first:

ETA?

None. In all honesty we're unlikely to give an ETA until the move is almost completely ready to go. I'll get back to it at the end but I know immediately upon reading this you'll want to know this.

What's the hold up?

So to put it simply: Most of the players see the front end and we see the back end. If the move to EE was a simple copypaste, we would have done it long long ago. I'd go in to it more but most of you know the story. NWNX, the primary feature we use, allows us to store a lot of information using databases. The magnitude of how these databases work can be seen in sheer filesize alone, this is just one thing being stored in our system:

Image

We have many categories of what needs to be stored. The issue isn't the amount of what's being stored, but rather how the game talks to it needs to be completely changed to move over to EE.

We use these databases for things like subraces, quest progression, job system, tracking logins, bans, PKs, area visits, assigning monster spawns to areas, bind points, idols, domains, hak updates... there's a massive list of them. A LOT of our systems in game use it and these are systems we value to give our server a unique identity that other servers may competitively struggle to 1:1 replicate (that is not to say they don't have systems we are missing). Because of this issue regarding NWNEE, this is a massive undertaking that effectively is us rewiring the entire server. You couple this alongside the people who know how to do it, ensure the system is running the entire server is allowing complete communication without error, then running it in an alpha form to make sure we're not going to lose everything or roll back broken systems... THEN actually publicly releasing the server... you have to remember we're doing this in our free time which I'll put at the end in a more elaborated form.

Our server is massive, it's just shy of 67gb:

Image

So getting this working is gonna be a pain.

Why are there Devs working on both 1.69 and EE?

So it's easiest to split this in to three categories.

We have devs who are:

-Working on the current game, ensuring we have content to last until EE without stagnating.
-Working on EE, in that we have our new content ready to launch. This is Mav with his classes and our other devs compiling a new HAK for EE.
-Working on EE, transferring the 1.69 server over so we can actually play.

So we're making sure you guys aren't just sat waiting for EE, we're making sure you have new EE content to play and then we're making sure you guys can actually play EE.

ETA...?

One thing I'd like to say is the magnitude of this work is going to pay off. We originally were opting for a complete wipe of Amia and creating it on EE without ANY of the things listed in the databases. The general feeling was we'd rather let it die in 1.69 than kill it prematurely by playing a barebones module, so we've been pushing since this time last year until now. We'll be having a new host who will remain anonymous so we can move from Disco's host, as well as having DMs nearly wrapped up their pre-EE plots, so you can expect a new frontier of when Amia comes to EE.

WHEN being the operative word.

I'd really like you guys who are playing now to please read this next sentence properly.

Please stop, even in a jesting/joking way, asking when EE is going to be released. While we completely understand the hype, it's adding potential burnout on to our team which are doing something that, if we were to employ someone to do, would cost a lot of money. Please just be patient and when we have updates we shall let you know immediately. If you want to help, please live-test the EE test module currently live to help Maverick and the team test new EE content.

Good plans! Especially the moving to another host part. I have been paying 30+ euro's a month for 10 years now, and I am looking forward to get rid of those bills. :D

I gladly help with supporting that for you, until Amia moves. There is a paypal link somewhere, right?

I had no idea of the costs to run. I've been sitting here donating to a warships fleet that I have not belonged to for like 2 years now. I will switch over Friday when I have a some spare time.

I think Bob meant something like... a donation button, and that money is used toward the bill for the new host, not directly paying the new host as I honestly don't see them caring to bother. No offense to them, but they are a business and want to get paid, how that happens is of little consequence to them, so they won't bother with multiple payees. We can just make a donation button with a paypal account or something of the kind, much like we have now.

The host is a single person, not a business. I've asked if they want a donation button or not.

I actually came to this forum today because I'm thinking of purchasing EE, and I have two questions:

1) Is Amia currently playable through EE?, and 2) Will EE be required after the update?

If it's 2, I'll probably buy it regardless of what the answer to 1 is, but I have a short-term coupon so I need an answer in the next day or two if anyone in the know sees this, please.

The server is currently only accessible through the NON-EE client (NWN original / NWN update 1.69).

If/when we make the move to EE it will only be available on the Enhanced Edition client.

If you purchase EE on Gog.com you receive both a EE copy and an original copy.

Hope this helps! Link to the unofficial discord in case you want more immediate help for more questions - https://discord.gg/vSgrKN4

Note to Everyone: COVID has delayed us significantly due to workloads and schedules and RL causing people to need to do things much differently. We're still working on it, of course, but I thought it would be important to point this out for you guys. The Pandemic has caused a lot of problems for a lot of people. That goes without saying, of course, but alas... it's reached our Amia lives also.

Pretty happy and scared :p

2 questions:
-what do we need to do for getting our EE account linked to old stuff?
-how will the new job system work?

Edit bonus questions:
What will happen to current stored merchand items in our boxes?
Wil there still be 2 servers or wil it al be meshed into one glorius server?

There will be a post for that also. It's not finalized yet. The biggest change is that (as of right now) it goes from 101 different jobs to 24. It's mostly in condensing things. Such as a Blacksmith job that can do both weapons and armor. Or a single Trader job instead of all the different kinds of traders. I'm still working on it, so I'll be posting that separately for you guys soonish.

Just a quick one regarding the new website: Will this website be shut down once the move's complete and if so will the new website assume it's URL eventually? I only ask as for any returning people they may check this website as their first port of call.

The website content will only transfer over what we manually transfer, so yeah. You'll wanna start backing up anything you yourself wanna keep. I'll be working on transferring the major items, personally.

There will be a lot of notice before this site goes down, though, so don't worry! Start now and be safe!

This is amazing news!

Just as a matter of interest, will the steam workshop page for Amia EE eventually be updated with all the required files when this goes live? (Link)

I bring this up, as for new players just clicking 'subscribe' on steam is a much easier first step to getting into the server. There have genuinely been people I've recommended Amia to, who didn't play due to having to manually edit the game directory. I think the benefit of this method is, that if admins update any files on that page, it'll automatically your game with them.

Is the double XP rate going back down on the EE server? It has honestly been nice to have, what with less people playing the game these days compared to when the XP rates were set more than 15 years ago.

EDIT: Also curious about what happened to the Discourse-based forums. I was kind of excited to see Amia move to a more modern platform as opposed to PHPBB.

You don't need XP. This is a roleplay server man!

Level doesn't define value: character depth does. I'd spend hours with a level 3 any day over a 30 if they can roleplay well.

I will be only transferring one Toon over to EE. I have a pre approved rebuild that will require making a new Toon from scratch. My question lies in, are there any Morgans and Sons outside in the mod and can be accessible through one of the portals in the beginning area? I crash every time and can not transit into buildings or get back in game in till a reset if I try. Or can a Dm spawn the M&S's retrieval box so I can take my items out of storage? Was hoping to make the new Toon, transfer over her gear from her old Toon just before we switch to EE, and then just transfer said new Toon to EE. Or would there be a better way going about this?

Author:  Frozen-ass [ Mon, Jun 15 2020, 14:21 PM ]
Post subject:  Re: Amia EE update (please read)

assuming rebuilds work the same in EE

morgan and son inventory is stored on your PC wand, and you will just get the same pc wand (or its data) dumped on your new character, so no need to clean out the bank :)

Author:  Jes [ Mon, Jun 15 2020, 15:10 PM ]
Post subject:  Re: Amia EE update (please read)

After some discussion on viability...

Morgan and Sons banks will need to be cleaned out. Those are presently stored via database and will not function properly with the move to EE.

Impknightofireland, arrange a time with a DM to help you out with that.

I thought the contention with such things was Disco's personal position on it, considering his job.

If he's no longer manning the server and the current populace doesn't oppose it, I don't see why it should matter. It seemed like a difficult thing to police in the first place, unless there were two people AFK standing in a corner.

Mind you, I don't have a gimp dog in this fight one way or another. I don't think we'll be turning into Sinfar any time soon.

This was basically everyone's reasoning for it.

It's not going to have much effect on anything. I don't personally see much point in demonizing it or drawing attention to it.
