Kelvin took a last look at the Monolith, or rather what was left of it. Tears formed in his eyes and rolled down his sooty cheeks. How could it have gone wrong? How could he have missed the rounding error in his celestial geometry calculations? He had tried to fix it by moving the tertiary focus towards infinity but that had breached a rift into a fiendish dimension... and now he was banned from the Monolith's premises. It was unfair!

They had given him a a few hours to collect his belongings and then they had put him in the first boat heading North. Kelvin knew one of the Readers had given the Captain instructions considering his destination. He swallowed the lump in his throat, dried his face, and went to the bridge of the cog.

"Captain, Sir... where are we heading?"

The captain looked down on Kelvin, and produced a grin that would give a dentist a heart attack. He looked at his first mate and they both started laughing like maniacs.

"They didn't tell you, laddy? I hope you took your winter coat along with you, har har. Our next stop is Howness, in Forrstakkr, and we are to put you on a boat there that brings you to a place where you can experiment in peace."

Kelving just nodded and went to his cabin where he cried himself to sleep.
