Following the trouble with the Black Thorn cultists, several body guards and mercenaries find they're still getting decent business from traders and travellers.

One organization's name is getting repeated several times now. The "Black Axes". Not a subtle name, for less than subtle mercs. The two bosses of the organization are two hulking male half-orcs known as Erok and Bork. Their employees consist of humans and half-orcs of both genders.

Relatively easy to spot by their black/obsidian garb, the mercenaries are seen often travelling around the isle, asking questions about who's in charge of places, hovering around places suspiciously, and indeed providing security for carts and merchants, as well as simply hunting around the isle as well.

Even though they haven't officially advertised their presence, they seem to be doing well for work. Or at least making themselves look busy. And as word spreads, more information comes out. They seem to be currently coming out of Cordor, and they can be hired by leaving a message there or at Kampos for Erok, Bork, or the "Black Axes".

With all the troubles on the isle, perhaps having the option of additional paid support will turn out to be a good thing.

But then again, it's Amia. Only time will tell.

The Black Axes seem to be building in number, with word that they may be recruiting some local adventurers into their ranks. Even still, they haven't posted official notices of themselves around the isle.

Many of these mercenaries visit many of the different cities and locations on the isle. Bendir Dale, Kampo's, Guldorand, Kohlingen, Wharftown, but most especially Cordor. Most of the time they pass people by, but on occasion they can be seen talking with random people from around the isle. Mostly just basic questions about local adventurers, factions, and government.

The mercenaries don't seem to otherwise be straying from their jobs.

So far, none of the mercenaries have been spotted travelling to Winya, with only a couple rarely passing by the falls. And it's likely no surprise, given who the bosses are.

Quite suddenly, all the Black Axes disappear off the roads and from the cities. Many say they saw them going to Cordor, and those in Cordor say they went to the west district. What caused this retreat is anyone's guess. For now, wherever they are, they're keeping to themselves.

Copies of a letter are circulated to several settlements: Cordor, Winya Ravana, Bendir Dale, the Oakmist Vale Grove, Wharftown, Howness, Guldorand, the Crouching Lemur Monastery, and Barak Runedar. They are sent to the attention of the various councils and authorities. A single copy also appears on these cities' public notice boards, where permitted and present, as well as appearing in Kohlingen and Kampo's Storehouse. While the individual letters are addressed to the applicable recipients, those present on the notice boards address the public as a whole.

People of Amia and the Surrounding Region,

Last night, members of the Defenders of Kohlingen participated in our usual weekly patrol, alongside a number of other adventurers and individuals from across the isle. We left the Holy City, traveling west. When we passed beyond the boglands, we were ambushed by dozens of Black Axe mercenaries. Some of our number fell, but we were able to restore them and push back the Black Axes until they fled. As they did so, a red dragon appeared and attacked us with some unimpressive bouts of flame before fleeing north over the sea.

Upon searching around the bodies of the fallen, we found documents suggesting that the Black Axes had accepted a contract to capture or kill the gold dragon Illunamaeryx, also known as Mary, the First Knight of Kohlingen. The contract was given by a woman named Fenien, on behalf of the red dragon Charirmarixensvern - presumably the one who attacked us following the ambush. This information was later confirmed by the leaders of the Black Axes, Erok and Bork, who expressed little concern that they had become hired assassins for a despicable master. I had hoped that it was a misunderstanding, but their dismissive response to our reaching out to them to warn them of the danger they could face in failing the task the red dragon gave them has made their stance quite clear. It would appear they do not fear the repercussions of failure.

The Black Axes, and anyone operating under contract for them, written or verbal, have been banned from entry into Kohlingen. Good merchants who visit our city, we urge you to hire local, reliable help. These Black Axes have willingly associated with a red dragon, and there is no telling how far the network of its influence goes. As such, we welcome anyone who has hired the Black Axes to come to Kohlingen for an inspection of wares and goods to ensure that nothing has been tampered with while you were not looking. We will compensate you for your time, as thanks for minding the safety of your people. We do not impose this as a mandatory inspection, of course, but we hope that you will consider it for the sake of your neighbors and customers.

Red dragons are vile and cruel beings. The presence of one so near our homes is a matter of concern for all people. An adult red dragon is massive, so if it makes any attempts to attack our cities, we will likely see it coming. I urge the guardsmen in all of our settlements to be on alert. This notice will assuredly reach our mutual visitor's claws, so it will know that we are fully aware of it. I can only urge that everyone be mindful of the danger, and practice caution as you travel. The Black Axe mercenaries have chosen to associate with the red dragon, and so they have earned enemies of Kohlingen this day.

I know that this is grim news, but it is a threat that we can overcome together. The Defenders of Kohlingen stand ready with our many allies to face this enemy.

The Lord Bahamut watches over and protects you all.

Illunamaeryx "Mary"
First Knight of Kohlingen

A reply is made and copied, placed in several locations, including the notice boards in Cordor, Bendir Dale, Wharftown, Guldorand, and Kampo's. Finally, a messenger is hired to deliver this same message to Mary in Kohlingen.

People of Amia,

While what you have been told is partially true, there are several inaccuracies that need to be addressed. We choose to believe that "Mary" has been mislead or misunderstood, rather than outright lying about us.

One of our underbosses, Birag, recently took a contract with a woman named Fenien. It was extremely lucrative, so we gave him full permission to pursue whatever it entailed. We were unaware of the full details until after the unfortunate incident of last night.

Fenien had informed Birag that Mary of Kohlingen (whom we did not know is a gold dragon), was a criminal, wanted for murder by wealthy merchants in Amn, represented by Fenien, for the murder of another merchant of Amn. Even Birag himself had no idea a red dragon was involved in this. When Birag organized a group of our people to set an ambush for Mary, he didn't tell them that the target was the First Knight of Kohlingen, which he was fully aware of himself. When she was spotted with a group, our people also noticed her with Andre'us who had made death threats against us several days ago. With all the confirmation they needed, my people attacked, not knowing they were attacking a host from Kohlingen.

We ask that you do not blame our people for the actions of Birag, who alone set up this vicious abuse of our trust with Fenien. Birag, coward that he is, didn't even participate in the battle himself. Last night he was confronted by one of our other underbosses to own up to his actions and submit himself to Kohlingen for justice. He refused. Later we made the same request of him, and he chose to try and flee his responsibility. There was an ensuing fight, in which Birag was killed. While it might not be the proper justice desired for what happened, the man responsible for abusing our organization and planning the attack on Kohlingen personnel is now dead.

In the future, we will be much more strict about the business we do and how much control we allow our underbosses. We hope this situation can be peacefully resolved and business allowed to return to normal. We join in Lady Mary's warning of the red dragon, which may come after us for Birag failing Fenien's mission. We will work with Kohlingen, if they'll accept it, to protect this isle from it's terror.

We understand if Kohlingen will not let us return to their city for what's happened. We regret this incident occurred and will move ahead with caution on future contracts.

Erok and Bork

For a while now, sightings of the Black Axes have been few and far between. Never more than one in any place, and usually travelling between Cordor and Kampos. Frustratingly, any attempt to follow them always ends up going no where. They seem to be well trained and behave as if they're being followed out of habit, finding areas to disappear and otherwise get away from any potential tails.
The two half-orc bosses have not been spotted in well over a week now. And only human men seem to be sent out to do whatever these lone mercenaries are doing.

*A certain blue clad ranger would take interest in one such man, following him through the forest after he passes her on the road. While taking no real action she would find his presence... out of place, and follow him until she looses him as he leaves the forest. Only to to run into him on her return and follow him again as he wandered. Having lost him she makes a point of placing herself by the crossroad just by the Grove.

After offering him a smile when they meet again she leave him be only to return a short while later and take interest in his tracks (if any) and the directions he walked, retracing her own steps from the Grove out to the border with Minmir bridge. She would then return to her own patrol looping back to the forest after passing through the Nexus Falls, returning to stand by the crossroads of the Grove once more and all while making a point of being seen.*

A winged Elf seems to still be keeping her eye on these sparse mercenary sightings. Every so often taking to the skies to get a better view at large. Some might even find her familiar, for whatever reason, as she crosses paths with them in the Forests and Cordor. She does not speak to them, or otherwise convey intent. Simply watching. Despite their public apologies, she does not seem overly convinced of their innocence after all.

Black Axe sightings have been on the rise on the paths, with a messenger frequently travelling through Bendir Dale. While some of the Axes are occasionally spotted in Cordor or Kampo's, the messenger travelling through the Dale doesn't seem to come around anymore. Why he stopped his regular route is anyone's guess.

Meanwhile, another group seems to have taken up the slack with escorts and other guard missions. Members of the Rose Guard are more frequently seen travelling the roads, escorting some carts and merchants. Members wear white clothing with black pants and mauve highlights. Some rumours surround these newer mercenaries. Some say they're operating out of Kohlingen. Some say they're former Black Axes.

While opinion is mixed as many remain suspicious of the recent rise in mercenaries around the isle, some are hopeful that this primarily female led company won't sink to missions of assassination and other dark tasks.

A notice appears on Boards in Cordor, Kampo's, and the outside board in Bendir Dale

Black Axe NoticeWe have committed no crime on the Dale. It is a hub of travel and trade that we would not harm. However, for simply passing through, one of our unarmed messengers was restrained, beaten, and stabbed through the throat dead. After that, more insisted on following us, and murdered more of our people as we tried to fight back against this.
The Dale and its friends have declared war on us, and we return the favour. We don't have the strength to fight a whole settlement, so we will do unto them what they do unto us. Innocent hin travelling the roads outside the Dale will be hunted and killed the way we have been killed, until we feel justice has been satisfied.
We will forgo doing this however under one condition. Delivery of the head of the halfling who executed our messenger. We don't care if we only hold it for a minute before you ressurect him, as long as he pays for what has happened. Otherwise your people will pay indiscriminently as our own have suffered.

A response finds itself posted in Cordor.

Quote:
But you take deals from red dragons to attack cities bigger than a village, aiming for a person of great prestige and higher protection than the Dale itself. Funny that. With your failed attack its obvious that your numbers are thin, coinciding with those leaving your numbers because of the terrible life expectancy. Your gang has been on Amia for less than a few months and your losses are numbering near the hundreds. Take your loss and move on,
move to the mainland or step up and fight like the men you pretend to be. Your black axes aren't scaring anyone when you've all made it so clear that you're about as capable as a goat on Rhul. Little girls got a head butt but with each fight you just seem more stupid.

If you did not want conflict you would have told your men not to be inhospitable toward the locals concerned with the intimidating looking fuck-brains lumbering back and fourth through their home all day every day. A simple hello, or answering a couple of questions and this could have been avoided.

However now that you insist on portraying your pathetic selves as the victims, and resort to targetting unarmed hin doing trade, comparing your own fully armed mercenaries, who I would hope you pay low for their tacky skill sets, that or you screwed the pooch on your uniforms for your men to such farmer folk- Before I go off topic; I'll sum this up for the lot of you black axes. War on Bendir? Beyond your pay grade. You flew too close to the hornets nest, and now you've just tried to kick it.

I propose an ultimatum of my own. Fuck off, or we will use our multi-millionaire rescourses and the countless arcanists and clerics who are willing to fuck you up for a laugh, not even taking into consideration that you just kicked their metaphorical little brother in the face. Acknowledge this, we will find you, and your two meat head leaders will be meat heads on pikes. Amia preaches purity, but you'll just be two crisped bodies by the end of this. No sentance, no jail time, dead, and mind; I can list off names that would make that death nice and slow.

A reply is left in Cordor.

Well, just about everything you said about us is wrong.
A) We didn't know we were being hired by a red dragon, as we were hired through an intermediary.
B) For the record, that attack against Kohlingen was a betrayal by one of our own to do so and he was gravely punished for his action.
C) Hundreds? Someone's really got a small penis to be claiming that near hundreds of us have been killed. And like you and your friends, we are able to raise the majority of our people who fall.
D) Our defense failed. We were being followed by people, including the same hin who murdered our messenger. We were trying to protect ourselves. We didn't expect an army to come after us.
E) I don't give a dribble of piss about the rest of your ignorance.
You do make a good point though about the multi-millionaire resources. We'll consider this.

- Black Axes

Later on, further notices are posted in Kampo's, Cordor, and the outside board in the Dale.

We've come to a more acceptable way for this to end that won't involve further blood on anyone's hands. The other options exist, but we'll accept monetary compensation for the murder of our people.
The price for that is no less than 1.5 million. A mere pittance considering what you're likely collectively capable of.
We'll give you 36 hours to leave a reply for us at Kampo's if you agree to that. Otherwise we will act on our original promise.
Your people and ours are all prideful. Perhaps more so than for our own goods. We'll see where that leaves us in a couple days.

A Reply to the Black AxesTo the group known as the Black Axes.

This is a warning.

You touch so much as one individual of the Dale, I will personally hunt down your leaders and put them in the ground myself.

However, to avoid un-necessary bloodshed (and to save whoever still remains loyal to your little band), I am more than willing to pay this blood-price.

I will be in the Dale should you need me. Be on your best behaviour.

-Ania

PS: Should I hear of you breaking this agreement, rest assured I will find you. And I will kill you.

Be careful Ania. They're being big scary bad mansies again.

Fantastic, you can keep coming back to die then, and people will keep leaving your shitty number because it truly is a shitty group of shitty mercs. You've impressed no one and people are routinely walking away from you for your failures and managing to be deceived into throwing your self like shit at a brick wall. No one's giving you any money, okay, you're not going to kill anyone, any time you do, you'll just fail because you can't fight. Why don't the lots of you get a job you're better at like inserting your necks in a noose and talking a short drop?

The best thing is you got hired by someone you don't even know who by, and you're not even taking responsibility. Your colours made the attack, it's on your head. The island is angry, and you think we're bothered by two, fuck-ugly, mentally deficient half orcs with axes? I've seen far more achieved by far fewer people, no red dragons just skill and a genuine business plan. Not just take a job you'll get paid. No you die is the other side of that coin. Go back to the frontier and find your mothers. They're probably worried sick. Pair of wankers.

It wasn't a defense. We entered the forest and you rushed us with your mighty four fuckwits. Don't think I'm as stupid as you. That's your biggest mistake. So on that jolly note. We'll be coming to find you very soon.

A message appears on the notice boards where the Black Axes' declarations are found in Cordor, Kampo's, and the Dale.

Attention,

Let it be known that a large group of adventurers including citizens of Kohlingen and Bendir Dale, as well as some independent adventurers, have slain the red dragon Charirmarixensvern. His rage and cruelty will threaten the isle no longer. Those slain in his most recent attack have been restored to life, and the marks of his fire have been removed.

Additionally, any hostility shown the innocents of Bendir Dale by the agents, members, or allies of the Black Axe company or its leadership will meet the same ferocity which destroyed the Red Flame. You claim innocence in the alleged attack on your people, but your practices in attempted assassination, torture, and murder have irrevocably marred your organization's name for this isle.

Take your greed and violence elsewhere. The innocents of this island are fiercely protected. I do not desire more bloodshed, but nor do I wish to see your despicable habits funded for the future slaughter of those who dare to oppose your views.

Illunamaeryx "Mary"

A message is posted in Bendir, Cordor, and Kampo's.

A generous individual by the name Ania has agreed to pay the price offered as an alternative to violence. We're thankful this could end without further bloodshed, and the Dale should appreciate it has such a friend watching out for them.

As promised, we will not hunt down halflings in response to the deaths of our people. We will do what we can to avoid further combat with any halflings on the island unless we're directly attacked and must defend ourselves. (And to clarify, them striking first. We won't assume anything. No excuses). Additionally, we will avoid the Dale entirely and not pass through your land.

Any further violence against us from certain individual halflings we will assume is done only for themselves and not on the Dale's behalf. We understand we're not liked, and that some see us as twisting our words, but when we make a promise, we keep it. This has ended and you shouldn't hear any more from us.

A week since the Black Axes' promise to stand down and they seem to have kept their word. No halflings have been targeted or killed outside the Dale, and no axes have stepped foot on Dale land. While some think they're keeping to their word, others wonder just how true they've been.

Rumour spreads of a plot by some unknown party to blow up the Dale that only failed by a fluke of luck, and others speak on still sighting the Black Axes in Cordor, the frontier, skull crags, forest, and Kampos. Some question whether there's a connection or not to the axes and this bomb attempt.

Meanwhile, other rumours spread of some dark force on the roads. A figure in black lurking in the shadows and bringing a quick death to the unaware. Cases of actual attacks though seem far and few between, and some people wonder if there's truth behind it or if a paranoid person's just inventing some sort of frontier boogeyman.

After the events of last night, Fel'Brin takes to heavily monitoring the road between Cordor and Bendir.

He takes to shadowing any Rose Guard patrols or escorts or any other small groups that traverse the path. This is done somewhat relentlessly over the course of several days and or until he notices anything out of the ordinary.

He stays well behind the groups and well hidden, as a professional tail would.

Though their appearances seem to be relatively infrequent, the Black Axes still seem to be making their presence known on the isle. Rarely are they sighted doing protection missions on the road, but they still seem to be in business. Who their clients are at the moment is anyone's guess.

Meanwhile the Rose Guard is also very rarely seen anymore, only managing occasional escort missions as rumour spreads that their business is falling through, in no small part due to harassment and interference from the Black Axes.

From infrequent appearances to no appearances, the menace on the roads that had been occasionally picking random victims has gone silent. Travellers and merchants who had been seeing the shady figure on the roads occasionally are nervous and uncertain now as they say they're not seeing him anymore. Some are hopeful, and some are paranoid that they just won't see him coming.

While rumours remain of potentially another demonic cult in the area around the frontier, the rest of the roads feel just a bit safer.

With several appearances now, it seems confirmed that the Black Axes are once again active on the isle of Amia. This certainly comes with mixed feelings as rumours spread of crimes like banditry and working with evil beings. Their presence for now however seems to be doing simple mercenary work like protecting merchants and carts. There are no new reports of banditry like behaviour or road taxation.

With their appearance back on the isle, they are also seen travelling through Bendir Dale, which is odd considering the rumour that they had a deal with the Dale to stay away. With that leads to more talk that the Axes once held the Dale's safety hostage for profit.

Maybe they're here to help fight the horde. Maybe they don't care. Hopefully they won't end up on their side...

A notice is left at Kampos for the "Black Axes" inquiring to their terms of service and prices there in. The notice is delivered by a half elf with dark hair wearing dark garb and a return address is listed in Kampos for a Beatrix to pick up.
