So last night Kaalnax finally got formally inducted into the Chromatic Covenant and it was a lot of fun. However, I noticed something that broke my immersion just slightly, and it was based on the altar that Stormwind placed on the ground for me to pray at. The altar says you need to continue praying for 120 seconds to receive an XP award. This is a cool feature and I really like it, however at the end of the 120 seconds your character stands up and emotes *ends the prayer* or something similar.

Suggestion:

Change it so that instead of ending the prayer at 120 seconds, you gain a 'mark' that stacks up every 120 seconds for as long as your character continues praying. Then when your character stops praying (either by emoting, cancelling the action by clicking the icon in the upper left of the screen, moving, or some other means) you gain an amount of XP equivalent to the number of marks you gained. So if you gained 3 marks during the course of the prayer, you get XP*3.

This way if your ritual lasts longer than the 120 seconds, which is likely will, your character doesn't stand up periodically throughout the RP.

So a PC has a portable XP generator?

And now you want to make it so that people can click on it and go do their laundry, while their character stacks up XP?

You can get an auto-clicker and do the same thing.

Countermeasures can be put into place to prevent that from happening. Something along the lines of an AFK check where if the player has not spoken for two straight 120 second blocks then no marks are acquired. That way they have to RP a prayer of some sort.

Also, when I did it the XP gain was 30 XP per tick. If you want to level up by getting 30 XP every two minutes be my guest.

Your issue: Character breaking worship/praying animation after 120 seconds.

Solution: Use the PC Emote widget for continuous worshiping animation.

Does the emote work in conjunction with the altars XP tick?

No. But you aren't asking for XP. This solution keeps immersion intact.

True but the inclusion of the altars is a nice little bonus for the RP involved.

The altars are still spawnable. The RP is still possible. The XP is a bonus. But anything related to gaining XP that doesn't involve murdering monsters gets far more scrutinized, especially considering how exploitable certain job systems have been in the past (leveling from 2 to 30 in less than an hour, for instance).

The mechanics involved behind that were a touch more complicated than a "if you move or don't talk you get no XP" implementation, though.

There's a difference between this and the old job exploits. This is suggesting an improvement to an existing job mechanic in role-play, whereas the old exploits were a result of the system being unapologetically terrible; and completely untouched from the day of their implementation.

Besides. By damn it if someone is actually doing religious RP I say give some bone to them. The next time I see a Lathandrite defending sharrans I'm gonna puke.

This is true, but it still has to be scrutinized for potential XP exploits. I'll note there's been a reluctancy for anyone to actually mess with the job system beyond fixing exploits.

Nothing is preventing RP here.

Okay.

This sits a couple miles down on the priority list, i'm afraid, with everything else we need to get done.

Yeah. Understandable. 'Course, honestly, can't hurt getting it out there right?

LATE EDIT: Kaalnax, maybe move this to the old Job System improvement thread? I 'swear' something for listing down job system ideas (like condensing it) already is out there!
