I'm not sure a complicated ranking system would be very hinnish, as they aren't too big on elaborate formalities or rigid authority. Yeah, stronghearts especially are militant about defense, but protectionism and authoritarianism aren't equivalent. If I wasn't so lazy I'd dig the passage relating to hin town defense and such from that book I posted copied from official sources, but again, I think it'd just be better if we had a meeting about this. We also seem to need a meeting to decide how to handle the treasury issue too, so there'd be at least two big things relating to recent changes to discuss.

So I guess the next question is, when would everyone be available again?

I have looked through all the posts and think we need to keep two points at the fore...

1- Bendir Dale is still in control of the Founders...the Hin that carved it out o the Amian Frontier (Nof, Tak, Fendel, Jayek, Muck and Kibs). The Stronghearts held this ground with martial vigilance..hence the Border Guards still positioned. For Home and Hearth they have defended the Dale against all comers. The Dale should have a pervasive feeling of martial compatence.

2- The flavor of the Founding Players (Bendir Dale was an area created by Players..way back in Amian History) should be our guide and a compatent militia, proud to wear their towns colors, is a must. A place where the prospect of manners, family, and civic responsability are valued and the prejidaces of the taller folk do not taint our hearts.

That's pretty much my standpoint. I'm glad a DM had the background and clarification to bring it up.

Could have Nof chew Lyle out, or something. I'd just prefer things to be handled/decided IC.

Stuff that involves NPCs and organisation outside of participation can never be IC or in game

I cannot imagine Jo and Pres having a convo about militia and telling Nof what they should and should not wear.

I'm not sure what the founding players believed, but I've always seen the hin view on "discipline" as one of advocating simple, wholesome values combined with a traditionalist communal outlook rather then elaborate and rigid procedures, rites, chains of command, etc. Hence my point about using a simple, more informal rank system and not making uniforms mandatory except for special occassions (like those little marches through Cordor, heh). Drilling regularly and such I would expect happen, but it ought to be something that's taken up with a spirit of responsibility rather than needing it demanded by rule or authority.

I guess what I'm saying is that, at least in Ukre's view, tallers need that sort of thing because they're over-proud (i.e., "think they so big") and won't generally co-operate unless compelled to, as most lack a natural humility and community spirit (at least, in his experience). A lot of the hin PCs don't have his view either really I've seen, which is fine as they're adventurers (he himself was a bit influenced by taller monastic tradition), but if the bulk of the Dale NPCs are, and the town itself was founded by, Stronghearts I would expect the above values to prevail. I guess the short version is, while it's certainly true they are militant I don't think people should get militant about protecting home and hearth mixed up with militaristic (especially if they're drawing their ideas of such from real-world, *human* influences). The flip side is also true, being simple and humble doesn't necessarily mean being easy-going or lax about things, especially where morals are concerned (they are still mostly LG after all).

You know I am reading a lot of broad generalizations of the hin in town. A vast majority of us aren't lawful anything. Nina is CN. Lyle is CG if I recall. And so on and so forth. Law and Order is fine and dandy but it is not the driving force behind why many of us are in the militia. I joined the Fist with Nina because Nina fit the part. She cared enough about the town to help it out and if part of helping it was enforcing (and not specifying exactly as to how) the rules of the town, then so be it. Other than that, you lazy suckers that are sitting here with an OOC thread: We get it, the idea is being fleshed out.

The next -logical- step is for someone to bring it up In Character. OOC is fine, but it is not how you get RP changes to happen. I don't care who does it. I could care less if Jo or any other character gives a flying poop about it IC or not. Somebody just needs to make it a deal IC. If there is not enough IC support for this, it -will not- happen. Here, let me spell it out in an equation for people that are less talented with words:

OOC+IC=WIN

OOC-IC=When pigs fly

I hope that clarifies.

Everything is "human" influenced. Most everyday things that toons do are derived from "the real world". Why is it so wrong to take real life ideas and apply them? Everyone does it. There's nothing wrong with using real life names of things for in game names for things. At all.

One (admittedly unofficial) estimate of the towns population pegged it at nearly 4000 residents in an Amia Maps thread in 2007. I don't know what the official number is supposed to be but perhaps a DM will chime in to clarify. The adventuring population would therefore be a tiny fraction of this.

I recognize that the majority of the "adventuring" population of Bendir isn't lawful (although we do exist in some numbers) but that's not necessarily representative of the population in general.

In response I would point out that the matriarch of the Hin pantheon is Lawful Good as is Arvoreen who is widely respected as the patron of those militarily inclined Strongheart hins who would join a typical town militia. Those of us generalizing are simply attempting to take into account the likely makeup of the broad NPC population in town.

A fair halfling woman with blond hair and blue eyes, in a green and silver adorned armour, has arrived at Bendir Dale with stuffed backpacks. She has claimed to be a young Paladin of Yondalla, straight out of Beluir, by the name of Ireen Silverheart.

The first thing she would do is fiddle slightly with her small pendant of Yondalla, before locating a rented room at the Inn, and then applying for citizenship in Bendir Dale.

Should anyone approach her, she would smile brightly and seem quite friendly, and calm. It would also be prominently noticed that she hardly master any language beyond hin, her common is adequate but drowned by a thick Beluirian-hin-accent.

Notice to all residents of the Dale. As part of my duties as an Apprentice Grimwarden I have been tasked to record each and every family history of those residing in the Dale. Thank you in advance.

Please return these forms to the General's Secretary in town hall so we can keep everyone's business more private. ((Send me a PM))

Aye, that was the point of my posts.

Anyway, as far as the way the rankings go now, one suggestion would be to rename Warriors to something like Wardens and Intelligence to Scouts. Might just be me but warrior kind of sounds more individualistic and aggressive compared to warden and "intelligence" is kind odd and sterile sounding for a guard group. Might also want to group mages into one group, as there don't seem to be a whole lot of them around compared to rogues, fighters, etc. Recruit, Private, Sergeant and Captain are ok as far as the complexity goes, but maybe we could think of more hinnish rustic sounding rather than militaristic titles, like Greenhorn or Tenderfoot or something. In most fantasy literature I've seen, halfling captains are usually called Sheriffs too. Just some thoughts to throw out there.

And that is the point. There are Hin burrows all around the Dale area. We may not see them, but they are there. It seems we are looking from two different perspectives, both valid. One, what would the town creaters have wanted and second, what works for my character now.

It is hard sometimes to remember that Bendir is a thriving community, there are NPC Hin moving about their lives, farming, trading, baking *mmmmm* and living. Hin treasure the comunity and if they didn't, they wouldn't be in the militia.

Blood had it right...

I'll use my Egan here...a bit flighty, not even close to being nailed down...never uses a title, but he will doggedly pursue any course to help the dale. Why, thats what Hin do. "I don care about yer orders mate...its got ter be done is all."

And Bobo and I are slightly at a loss. There is a good deal about the founding of the Dale, but not very many details. So we need to interpret what the "goal was" of the founders. They recieved the Dale as a project as a reward. If they were to come back and see it now...I want them to recognize it and respect where we *read as all residents of Bendir* have taken it.

So..a simple yet rigid ranking system (militiamen/woman, Militia Sergant, Militia Cap'n) As for uniforms, when you are on duty, wear it. When we have a parade, wear it. When we do what Hin do...wear what you want.

Thats my 2 cents...If there are major issues...take care of them OOC here. If its minor then do it IC.

This morning before the break of dawn, I heard a thud outside the walls. Upon investigation, a severed drow head and a ceremonial drow dagger was found under the tree by the junction.

The head was identified by Belladonna to be Eldania. The head was then taken into custody by a Miss Chiania Windleaf.

According to the eyewitness report by the guards on duty, a dark figure in grey was seen going Northwards not long after the head was discovered.

An interview with the resurrected victim, Eldainia, reveals that she was beheaded by a drow slaver known as "Nakasha". A large taller companion who was with Nakasha addressed her as "Matron".

It should also be noted that the man was dressed in red and gold and is possibly from the Order of the Flaming Blade. A description of the man by the victim matches that of a war knight Bella and myself met recently, a man named "Thoric".
