As of the late three Chessentan's two women and man have been seen traveling and staying in the towns of Khem. The Symbol of Tchazzar the first king worn proudly upon their capes. While they spend as much time in the inns and tavens as any travelers might Nearly each day that has passed this Tenday has seen them make an expedition along the road through the Ankh'remun desert. Like clockwork this occurs with military precision. Yet unlike many who travel this lonely road fighting Bandits it becomes clear to any who follow in the wake of them and their expedition they are not just killing the bandits who strike near he old roads but sending them a message. One wrought in blood and the bodies of Bandits dragged to the road side. Some burned, some beheaded, one poor bastard left with his hands nailed to the side of an old caravan wagon, a cut throat the only mercy to stave off death by exposure.

A The remains of a now routinely used camp and a sign planted by the road evidence of the intent of culling of the Ankh'remun Desert robbers and perhaps of interest in the ruined city that lay across the sandy wastes.

(The Sign reads in Mulhorand, Untheric and Chessentan)
BANDITS BEWARE!
BY RIGHT OF CHESSETAN CUSTOM ANY BANDITS FOUND PREYING ON THIS ROAD SHALL BE SUBJECT TO EXECUTION OR SLAVERY
THIS SHALL BE ENFORCED DAILY BY THE FAMILY CINERIS ANY BANDITS WHO TURN THEMSELVES IN SHALL BE SHOWN MERCY.
FOR THE GOOD OF KHEM, GLORY OF CHESSENTA AND HONOR OF THE CINERIS FAMILY!

If passing through Djedet they would be asked to come visit the Sekhry at their earliest availability by one of the militia, as the proud Anhuran would like to speak to them.

And indeed they were available to make their way there as soon as possible.

Aoth has had, what he would not call 'the pleasure' to meet the three Chessentians before the meeting takes place. The Earthchild, Kala, hands the Scrivener a piece of papyrus and he furrows a brow, evidently concerned. He immediately quills a letter to the Sekhry, yet allows the Chessentians to remain.. for now.

During their robber-cleansing missions, Chessentans would occasionally encounter bronze haired, obsidian skinned woman, clad in stone and bronze colored armor, running after screaming bandits. She'd stop only for a moment to wave to Chessentans and offer them her sharp-toothed smile, then continue running after bandits.

And quite cheerful she would be offered to share their camp, a bottle of wine, some food and a song. As would any who they encountered on the road.

It would seem engaging in acts of violence is not the only Chessentan steryotype practiced by the new comers to Khem. Soon enough they are selling the wines their homeland is famed for, perhaps a poor substitute for fresh water but certainly something to uplift the woes of the folk of Nes'ek or Djeedt as their sales drift from one place to another.

"Fine Chessentan Wines try a sample cup for free, Red and White 55 gold coins a bottle, Grape mash moonshine a mere 35 gold coins, we also take bulk orders come one come all and enjoy the bounty of Chessenta!" One sister yells as the other waits quietly to serve any customers.

Another day, more forays into the desert of Ankh'rumen by the Chessentans, as before they travel together sometimes they travel with others who are not Chessentan. Making their way across the old ruin and they ruin they say was once cursed leaving a trail of blood and bodies. The message to the bandits being made clearer, as the heads of Bandit leaders, Presumed leaders due to their skill, are left hanging from the road sign. Others impaled on their own spears. Barbarous deeds? Desecration of the dead? Perhaps simply the way the world was.

For a warrior people raised in the shadow of upstart slaves who rose to shatter the tyranny of a god-king, animosity over the death of robbers, thieves and killers is lost or perhaps simply just not cared about. Their progressive patrols soon finding their way into the ruins of Ankh'remun the box canyon walls of the ruined city the kind of killing ground beloved by Chessentan blades.

Image

Though in part their continued focus in the Ankh'remun desert and Ruins limits their interactions for supplies and wine sales to Nes'ek. Any inquires made in Nes'ek about them would quickly reveal that they are avoiding Djedt and the southern lands due to a grave insult to their nation and its glorious past and an even greater slight against the rights of Free Chessentan humans suffered in Djedt by its officials.

Other times after indulging in their own wine, Akantha the eldest of them sometimes claims that the Alambar sea belongs to all the old Empires peoples and that more Chessentan blood was spilled against the Sea Devils then anyone else here.

Though the region has seen a dramatic loss of bandit activity from the nomads the Chessentans still continue to secure the Ankh'remun region focusing on the ruins of the old city. Occasionally they come to Nes'ek to sell wine or more often trade it for fresh supplies. Though in an act of what some might call typical Chessentan Bravado a sign is placed just out of Nes'ek's gates. Writen in Chessentan and Common, seeming to have lost any care for the opinions of the Mulhorundi who claim the south. It states Boldly.

Glory be to Chessenta! The Barbarism of the Ankh'remun desert bandits has come to end by the might of the free-men of Chessenta! May the folk of Nes'ek rest safe and sound! May Chessentans who call Khem home know that the Glory of Chessenta will never die!

The sign is dismantled by the Temple, with spiteful looks cast at the Chessentan's by many within the town.

Quote:
"You weren' feckin' here when th' nomad tribes fell upon them fiend Jackals" says one of the Merchants in the town.

Quote:
A large gob of phlegm is let fly by a member of the Hoarite church.

"Daft curs, you've gone and removed the shield that protects the town from the beasts of the deeper desert"

The clergy of the dawn and sun remains silent, whilst the Cathedral housing the Kelemvorites doubles its guards. The mood of the town of Nes'ek is ugly as these outsiders inflict themselves upon it's people. None in the town move to remove them, and none in the town move to purchase anything from them.

Proud warrior people they endure the townsfolks hateful cries and insults, removing form Nes'ek any signs of claim of their "good" deeds. Rather then deal with the towns folk for goods the portal to Wiltun and the west becomes frequently used when such is needed. Heads held high warrior spirit unbroken they continue what ever it is they have been doing in the ruins of Ankh'remun, and clearing the region of human nomads for.

With all the information that the Sekhry has been given from outside sources he bans the group from Djedet and thus the Oasis and the Khalil region as well.

The Chessentan sisters who now numbered three and their occasional guest sometimes made their way out into Ankh'remun Desert towards the ruins. Though one might note that when attacked by any beast of the wild they seemed unconcerned with the same level of butchery as they had on the bandits. Even going so far as drive them off with fear rather then waste time killing them. Perhaps they had a druids appreciation for natures balance. Perhaps they removed the bandits because human eyes could bare witness, or perhaps they thought the desert dogs were cute. Was imposable to say really.

However when in The ruins of Ankh'remun where they camped and spent time together or with guests... they slew, or drove any such beasts who troubled them back towards the wastes regularly.

Passion rules the hearts of the men of Chessenta it is said and perhaps that same passion that fueled riotous debates and bloody wrestling matches was what inspired their wine and art. Perhaps it was what inspired Akantha to take up her lyre and move to the square of Nes'ek boldly in spite of the peoples hatred and disdain for her. Her fingers deftly starting to drift over the lyres lilting strings her voice, that of a bard of great skill starting to sing a song charged with courage, determination and strength loud enough that few in the small town would not hear it.

The Verse of Chessenta
"In times long ago when the world was younger.
When Gilgeam ruled and under him men did suffer.
Mothers wept for lost son's and son's lost brothers.
The yearning for freedom from inglorious rule in many hearts did burn.

From light of dawn and long through the night
Never give up, as free-men we fight!
In-spite of the odds, We will die free, never to bow to Gilgeam's Tyranny!

From mountains on high he did come!
An invincible warrior none could best.
With the soul of a king a fearless heart beat in his chest!
Free-men he said, stand by side, the evil of your masters you must not abide!

From light of dawn and long through the night
Never give up, as free-men we fight!
In-spite of the odds, We will die free, never to bow to Gilgeam's Tyranny!

The men of the land they trembled like sheep
They asked the warrior how against Gilgeam they had any chance their lives to keep
The king he roared and all men did heed what he spoke
To live as free-men we must stand and fight, otherwise what meaning has your life!

From light of dawn and long through the night
Never give up, as free-men we fight!
In-spite of the odds, We will die free, never to bow to Gilgeam's Tyranny!

Against the ten thousand of Gilgems host the slave-men did go
The invincible king at the armies fore,
Long was the fight and the field flooded in gore.
The king invincible stood on high his sword raised in triumph to the sky

From light of dawn and long through the night
Never give up, as free-men we fight!
In-spite of the odds, We will die free, never to bow to Gilgeam's Tyranny!

Though long has it passed that time once ago
A lesson lasts that all men should know
Your fate it rests with in your own hands and by courage and right a free-man must stand!"

Occasionally a song drifts on the wind and echos through the wastes and canyons of Ankh'remun. A sure sign the Chessentans are about. Song with a strong rhythm accented by the banging of shields, stamping of feet and staves or spear butts against the ground. Though clearly not with enough volume to be a group of more then one very skilled bard and perhaps one or two others joining her.

Chessentans March
Hooah! Hooah! Hooah!
We march. We March. We March.
We March to war!

Sword Brothers.
Shield Brothers!
Blood Brothers!!

Hooah! Hooah! Hooah!
We march. We March. We March.
We March to war!

Swords Held Firm.
Shields Held Strong!
Heads Held High!!

Hooah! Hooah! Hooah!
We march. We March. We March.
We March to war!

Serious.
Fearless!
Peerless!!

Hooah! Hooah! Hooah!
We march. We March. We March.
We March to war!

For Gold.
For Glory!
For Freedom!!

Hooah! Hooah! Hooah!
We march. We March. We March.
We March to war!

Sellswords, Chessenta's sold them and bought them. A way of life for the people of the disagreeable city states. Thus perhaps it was no surprise that hidden way past the Ankh'remun wasteland when adventurers came upon the Chessentan camp in the ruins they were being paid to drive the beasts from the ruins in the course of their "adventuring". A simple matter of honor? endearing themselves to travelers from the west? or simply encouraging a more wide spread action against the ruins inhabitants. Either way no word reached Nes'ek or Djedt as the Chessentans were banished from one, unwelcome in the second and the western adventurer/sellswords hardly seemed to care about staying in Khem longer then was needed to wet their blades.

The desert sun drifted below the horizon as the Chessentan sisters returned to their camp in the Ankh'remun ruins. Akantha scowled as she drew out a knife and started to clean the headless body of a cobra.

"If anyone tells me they taste like chicken again I'm slapping them" were her only words as she scraped the cobras insides out and spitted the headless body over the camp fire.

"Your just happy you don't have to pay for it" muttered Dionysia as her sister prepared yet another meal of roast snake for the evening.

Soon enough the boney serpentine meat was cooked thoroughly and the two were washing it down with wine to kill the taste.

"So the mercenaries Ive paid to clear out the ruins worked well, and didn't overly hinder our funds, still we need to keep our presence if we want to make the ruins secure enough for the next stage of devlopment" spoke Akantha between biting off the gamey and tough snake meat.

Dionysia ate her share of snake with more decorum then Akantha.
"Indeed the Chaos in the south does create a unique opportunity here in the north, we should take advantage of the situation and move before its too late to act without locals poking around"

Akantha nodded and downed a drink of wine to kill the taste of overcooked snake. "Clean up and salvage of debris and corpses, may have to be done before we drive all the beasts back into desert."

Dionysia smirked slightly her voice cool and deadly "Wouldn't it be a shame sister if the very beasts we drove into the wastes attacked Nes'ek's gates in hunger"

Akantha grinned wolfishly and nodded at that delightful thought then added "I still think Animateing the bones and corpses here makes for a cheep and effective work labor force for our salvage and clean up"

Dionysia narrowed her eyes slightly, she had no desire to animate the dessicated undead for such a project given they would need to hide them or send them off to be destroyed soon after. Any obvious signs of undead could bring down heat even in the face of the madness gripping the south.

"We shall see, but in any case we must move our project schedule up before the locals decide they do not want us defiling their sacred ruins, pawning off their unearthed cultural relics, building a Thayvan Embassy and claiming this place as Free-Chessentan Soil"

Akantha nodded in agreement to Dionysia. "Well that's the long term, we will need to clean the place up, get rid of the beasts, set up a base in the large tent or old caravan wagons, breach the sealed doors of the temple and that old house, hire some mercenaries from home and who knows what else... Goddess this is a large project"

"Well let us hope the investors we are seeking take interest in the project"

"Indeed sister, let us hope"

With that they finished their meal and looked onto the ruins knowing that a worthy task awaited them.

Over the past several days the Chessentans had continued much as they were, as Djedt prepared for war on the mainland the Chessentans put the animals in the Ankh'remun ruins to the blade. Or rather Akantha or hired travelers did. Dionysia had taken to study and appraisal of the ruins and the remains of habitation left by the nomad robbers and Stingers. The eyes of the Mulhorundi were turned blind away from Khem and the Chessentans were taking the opportunity to work diligently.

In the days and weeks that had passed the two sisters could be found wandering the ruins of Ankh'remun, the scholarly one seeming to have a book in hand as she scribbles on the pages while passes the large pavilion tent, followed by the pair spends the better part of a hour looking looking over the tent and its interior while her sister kept a sharp eye out for threats.

Image

Quote:
[Entry from Dionysia's Journal]

Started keeping records of what we ave found in the ruins, today i have planned to examine the pavilion tent and the small house next to it. I am looking for the relative usefulness of the tent to see if it can be used or if it has been exposed to the weather of the desert, i will be checking the stitching and the support poles... pray it isn't infested by those blasted cobras...

Some time after the pair move over to the small home just a stone throws from the tent as again the scholarly sister seems to wander around the house tapping her hand on the brick work and looking into examine the inside

Image

Quote:
[Entry from Dionysia's Journal]

Working our way in we found this small shack of a home, it rather interests me all the building around seem destroyed but this one persists, i wonder why i think i shall check is structure and see what is inside to a possible clue to what is was once used for. As well i will check to see if there is anything of value that could aid us in our exploit here.....

The two sisters then turned their attentions to examining the ruins of the old market across the road, sure that any goods were long since looted or rotted their main interest was in how the wood had held up to time and the elements and if there was anything of value they certainly weren't above pocketing it.

Image

Quote:
[Entry from Dionysia's Journal]

Our finally stop of the day.... Ugh... the smell is less then pleasant... I don't know if its the spoiled food or the corpses, but there maybe something of value left here. Well... if it hasn't been looted already. Also need to check the wood that the stalls are made of and see if they are still of use. Ugh.... i need a bath after this.....

After spending sometime exploring the three locations the pair seemed to retire to their camp in the region. Where Dionysia started to compile her notes and Akantha looked to the other ruined structures that were on their list in the ruins to investigate for their potential use and salvage value.

It seems not all eyes are turned blind to the Chessentian activities in Khem...

A tiefling, a magi to be precise, bearing the symbol of Hoar seems intent on seeking out the Chessentans. He'd ask around town for a lead on where they may have gotten off to.

It was hardly a secret that they came to Nes'ek on occasion for supplies, before they disappeared into the Ankh'remun wastes. It was also common knowledge they spoke of a place called the Triumvir as if a second home.

Other things watch from the deep desert. . .

And the people of Nes'ek are not blinded, the townsfolk and guard restless now as information from the wetlands is passed around. . .and the ability of the Chessentans and their associates to ressuply in Nes'ek soon becomes impossible.

Less then happy about this recent turn of events buying food, water and necessary goods soon becomes a matter of using the portal in Wiltun or portal wands. Though the Chessentan's still make their way through Nes'ek on their travels. Their promise to lend their blades if the town comes under attack not an idle one.

Recent events with Nes'ek and her conversation with the followers of Assuran she and her sister had met caused gave Akantha a sudden thought a thought that made her feel stupid and then disgusted her because it would cost her gold.

It became painfully clear that for their long term plans they needed Nes'ek as a buffer between them and Djedt. It also occurred they had done nothing to really build their relations with that buffer zone. That and if Nes'ek fell and Djedt won the war in the Mainland they would have a clear path to taking the entire island. Given that the Militia leader had used her as a cats-paw spite demanded that she prevent Nes'ek from being crushed and foil their desires.

"Tchazzars blood, spending money to make money... I feel sick.." she cursed quietly as she went to the writers desk to pen more letters.

To the Temple of Assuran, to the Tiefling Magi and Northman follower's of Assuran from Akantha and Dion Cineris

My friends as you know the safety of Nes'ek from Djedts machinations is in our best interest and surviving the conflicts they fear are coming is a priority. To this end we are suggesting a gift of heavier weapons, armor and shields be given to the towns guards in the name of Assuran and as an Olive branch on our behalf. I will attempt to contact a group of merchants I know to arrange a shipment. If they can not we will purchase and transport a supply ourselves. Anything your temple or yourselves can offer the defenders of Nes'ek will help them see we are on their side.
-Yours truly Akantha of Cimbar

The magi appears to have bought property in Ne'sek recently, having moved into the home to stay. After he is settled in he goes to scan the northern and southern roads for any signs of major activity, expecting something more than beetles and jackals. After he returns to town he reads the letter intended for him in the Temple of Hoar and heads to his home to think.

As is custom within the Ecclesia of Assuran the letter is made public to any member of Assurans faithful to peruse and make comment on and under the terms of the Troika alliance with the Church of Lathander and Kelemvor is shared amongst those faiths as well. The sour mood within Nes'ek with regards to the Chessentans takes a turn for the worse.

. . .outsiders. . .

. . .buy us off. . .

. . .don't understand Khem. . .

. . .think coin solves all problems. . .

Indeed it is all the Guard can do to keep the villagers from assualting the Chessentan contingent whenever they pass through Ne'sek, and thats not to say some rotten fruit, stones and slabs of spoiled meat aren't hurled in their general direction.

An armored man, one whom on occasion visits the Assuran temple though he bears no open signs of Hoar's following, however any of the temple priests would easily be able to discern him as a follower, takes note of the letter. Already had he heard the rumblings of these Chessentans from those in the town of Nes'ek during a passing through, and this made the situation weigh more heavily on his mind. He takes the time to pen a note in the temple and leave it there for any faithful to read, specifically the leaders.

These Chessentans bode ill upon my mind. They have been outcasted by Djedet, a people whom I know not personally but believe to be good-hearted despite the clashing of faiths. While I have little standing with the temple here itself, I urge caution with them. The people of Nes'ek are clearly affronted by their actions, and any dealings would distance our following from them. I believe we have all come to this conclusion already.

They should be watched, for those that seek to buy a populace's admiration, especially those who are outcasted, cannot be trusted. If we know their names, or can get them, then perhaps they should be researched. I can inquire with Zelly, as she seems to know many people. We may be able to discern their character.

If there is a concern for Nesek's defenders equipment, I would suggest Nes'ek consider the option of Copper Industries. I have spoken with Zelly, the owner, and she is a good woman. Her heart is clean by my account, and her company seeks to do good.

By the will of the Three Thunders,
Ferrus

The following note is left in the temple.

Ferrus,

I will wish to speak with you. Not all the world runs in shades of black and white and the situation is not as it seems at a glance. I will be here in Ne'sek.

The lack of Understanding worked both ways, Akantha and her kith growled lowly at the mood turning even more sour. Perhaps it was endured because in the minds of many Chessentan's all other peoples until proven otherwise were innately inferior in culture and civilization to some extent or another. Though she bore no weapon in the town, she used her hoplon shield to fend off assault from fruit or rocks that might come the way of her sister Dionyisa or Aoida whose well beings were apparently above her own. She also rarely appeared without her hopolite armor, her eyes glaring coldly at the most vocal townsfolk from under her bronze plated helmet.

"Tchazzars Blood" she hissed the curse under her breath and muttered to her siblings in Chessentan "We offer them weapons so that they might better fight for their freedom and they treat us like lepers. They are less men and more sheep"

After a short hushed conversation with her sisters and brother they became almost ghosts in Nes'ek remaining no longer then it took to pass through the town unless they were called there for other reasons. The Chessentan in their warrior souls, fire full bellies and unshakable pride were getting sick of spineless Sand-Rats and their business in Ankh'remun was more important then wasting breath on common men.

Bardrick observed the situation unfold as the people became unruly. "A lack of intrepidity.." as he shook his head. For certain he was use to the bravery of Northmen.

A red haired man dressed in common attire holding a small bundle in his arms sits on the steps up to the temple of Lathander, looking up briefly to see the unruly behavior take place, he lets out a soft quiet chuckle and continues on enjoying his day, somewhat in a brighter mood.

A note is dispatched to Djedet, intended for the Sehkry.

Sehkry of Djedet,

I have been told stories of you that bode ill. I wish to hear your side of the story concerning the Chessentans and their removal of the filth that raided anything traveling the roads north of Ne'sek. I cannot meet you in your town for I fear that your laws do not allow one of my blood to enter your city.

"One has to spend gold to make gold" spoke Akantha bitterly to her sister Dionysia as she handed her a recent acquisition. Dionysia quirked an eyebrow for a moment before unrolling the scrolls her sister had given her and commented

"Professional grade maps of the Waste and Ruins? This must have cost you a few coins"

"More then I care to admit and I hope worth it in the long run" Replied Akantha with a scowl.

Dionysia nodded curtly to her sister and added the maps to the notes she had been steadily gathering as they and sometimes their other two siblings explored and examined the ruins between their efforts to drive the beasts that lingered in the waste away from their camp site.

It had not been since the conflict with Anubus that the Chessentan family had set foot on Khem. Rebuffed and insulted for their attempts to rid the bandit tribes, offer mercenary service to the Mulhorundi and even dejected in their attempts to sell their wine in Nes'ek many would have presumed they would not have returned.

However like carrion eating raptors the Chessentans had simply been waiting and above all quietly scheming. Ankh'remun had been less scathed it seemed then much of Khem. Plans that had been drawn up could they surmised simply be picked up once more. A bit of concentrated effort had driven out the bandits and with the islands major powers in shambles a bit more was all that could be needed to conquering glory of Chessenta to the island.

As they had before once more the family of Chessentans were seen traveling from Nes'ek into the wastes wearing her hopilite and brandishing her Xiphos Akantha couldn't help but speak aloud in Chessentan.
"Glory to Free Chessenta, glory to Cimbar and its sons and daughters" Though in her dark thoughts she added "and glory to the Nemesis slayer of gods devourer of hypocrisy"

The North and west seemed to have changed little the beasts still prowled the night, the ruins still remained nesstled in the stoney shelter of cliffs. Or it had seemed so at first, the quakes and destruction that had shaken the island had at first seemed to have impact on Ankh'remun however it became clear upon their explorations that something had changed. The stoney cliffs had cracked and sank into the sea along the north western edge of the ruins where once had been barren rock was no water. For a people as prolifically talented at sailing as Chessentans any body of water large enough to use for trade was a resource of great value. Akantha gazed out over the newly formed waters edge. The only question on her mind, was of what nature was this water.

((IE can anyone tell me if the water edge added in Ankh'remuns ruins is a lake, river, ocean or any details that would be easily visable from the shore))

The handsome Chessentan stepped out of his portal into the late evening air in Nes'ek wearing his traditional arms. He pulled off his sweat filled helm and let the cooling winds of the oncoming evening blow over his face cooling him down. After a moment he tucked his helmet away and ran his fingers through his close and neat trimmed hair then headed into the temple of the morning lord.

"Good Evening Priestess." Aduro said and inclined his head towards her. "I have come to give donation" And with that, he placed over one hundred gold in the donation bowl, smiled "For you my lady." then made his exit with a farewell.

He stepped down into the square again. Then proceeded to setup. Magical bags and boxes are wonderful things, you can store most anything in them at times. And Aduro drew out several tables, some thick stone slabs which could easily be held with two hands, bowls, knives and other useful utensils. Then he simply began to cook.
"People of Nes'ek, you have suffered quite enough in the past. For tonight, I bring you an evening where you can relax and enjoy yourselves. It may only be one night. But it will be one night where you will not need to worry about the woes of the world. Myself and my Family are going to provide food, drink and entertainment. Free unless you wish to pay."
And then, he set to work.
