When dawn breaks the tall Mamluk gets ready to start the day, taking the brush, soap and bowl, items to shave his head and perform his cleaning habits, which so zealously carries out every day. The inside of the tent is not big nor tall, though the Mamluk bends and moves easily within; patiently, waiting for the new day, opens the curtain that keeps him from the outside, and to his surprise finds something there; a box covered with a mantle sits ahead the tent. He carefully eyes the package noticing a letter on it, does not take too long long to identify the familiar hand writing.

Be careful. Nox has a special liking for the ankles.

Getting rid of the protective cloth reveals the creature inside, which rapidly curls to the other side of the cage with a hiss like the trapped beast it is. A clawed hand darts the way up, protecting the eyes from the unforgiving sun of Khem. The creature, with red eyes full of contempt from between the digits, meets the grey and calm stare of the priest, gazing at each other for a time that seems an eternity.

The creature remembers someone from the past, it is a young kobold, just a cub, with obsidian scales that nearly reflect the light; yes, it is easy to see where it comes from, who the mother was, and by definition who the father. Above all, evokes a promise and a bond of friendship, a commitment to comply; an unexpected task, especially for a man who lacked of a childhood.

The confusion doesn’t last long, the tall Mamluk shows the palm of his hand, trying to avoid a hostile gesture; slowly withdraws, and sits in front of the box, watching the creature, giving him or her time to relax. Time passes, the sun becomes hotter as it rises on the horizon, the heat makes its mark and both remain face to face, without a word to say, and occasionally crossing stares.

When the creature finally seems to relax (but who can be sure about that, it is only a weak interpretation over time) then the Mamluk rises slowly, heading to the tent, coming back carrying a mug with milk and salted meat. He sits in front of the creature, then remembers the ankles and discretely slide them back, while leaning to offer drink and food to the little kobold.

Ah, the rebellion. It was predictable.

The Mamluk is not a stranger to the world. Many are those he met in his travels. The honorable and the scoundrel. The wise and the fool. The humble. The silent. The greedy. The rebel without a cause was among them.

It was a test of endurance.

The creature knew it could not escape. The cage had ceased to be a problem, but that was just one scratched from the list; there was nowhere to go. Sun-bathed dunes comprise the endless background in every direction. It was a prison in the open.

It was a test of endurance.

The ominous red-blood eyes made the mistake of setting on the offering of the Mamluk. The creature had troubles not salivating at the thought of giving the jerky a good and well deserved bite. The smell alone was dazing. Weakening. But it would not fall that easily. Maybe if it just waited a little more, he could take the Mamluk by surprise...

It was a test of endurance.

The kobold knows... that the Mamluk knows. More than once the Mamluk had caught the eyes of the kobold looking around for something to use... and twice as many times spying the offering... But it would not desist. The eyes always found their way back to meet the Mamluk's. They burned with defiance.

It was a test of endurance.

The sun... For how longer would it torment the creature? It seemed like it had been up there forever... warming the scales and numbing the sense. Blinding. The little obscure robe it had for clothing was not enough. The creature felt defenseless... but it wouldn't give the pleasure to the mammal... Not... gonna... happen...

It was a test of endurance. And the Mamluk knew the result.

The morning had just come to an end by the time the kobold made short work of the jerky and a magician's act for the milk to disappear. The shadow of the tent was next.

The first step always seem the hardest.

As night falls the Mamluk carries the case into the tent, placing it in the cold ground sand. The night brings low temperatures, sometimes able to brave the cold of the northern lands; this particular night is extreme, deeply permeating to the bone. Briefly place his eyes upon the little creature, taking a moment to think and try to assimilate the event. Apparently there isn’t a lot to take, just go along with it.

The man brings out a blanket from a bag, which tosses the little creature, to help spend the night. This done, the man kneels on a rug, and leaning with his hands clasped over his forehead to touch the ground, letting out a litany, prayer to a god from the past, of many pattern and none, source what has come and what has being done . The sound of his voice is clear, in perfect draconic, something unusual for a human.

He glances briefly at the creature, curious of his reaction, and then resume with his prayers. The contact with his deity is short, not many minutes pass before the Mamluke strips from his armor into light clothing, lies down on the rug, ready to sleep. Before doing such, he just says one last word.

Nox.

The simplest tricks always work with the impatient. It is not as much as a trick, as to become a fisherman, toss the bait, and wait. And wait. And wait. It was bound to work sooner or later. The mind of the creature was ready soil, open, manipulable when the right cards are played. The Mamluk surely had little doubts of this.

One may have expected a change of attitude after the supposed first step. A change of behavior. A slight different perspective. There was none, but it was turning somewhat amusing to chase the glares of the restless red eyes. Yes, it looks ready to battle to the very end, but there's where it becomes evident for the Mamluk that this creature is blood and flesh of a friend. Its similarity is ironical in nature. Look like one thing, be other, and the Mamluk could see just through the shades; they were obscure, but he wasn't blind to the deceit.

The creature was curious. Full of unspoken questions, what and why. Who was the human? What did he want? What did he say? Why was he there? How could it be so cold? Did he see that? No? Perfect. The creature wanted to know, yes, but it wanted to get away first. Return to known terrain, and once it was in its own field, it would play its game the way it wanted. It just had to wait a little longer... just a little longer until the big human was snoring...

Perhaps it was destiny that the Mamluk had to wake up in the middle of the night. A bad dream, or the alarming sixth sense that one grows out of parental duty. Something was out of place. Something felt wrong. It was unsettling, but the reason remains unknown for only moments. The moments that it takes for the Mamluk to direct the eyes to the cell... and find it wide open and empty, with a pair of little footprints printed on the sand heading out of the tent.

Knowing the origin of disturbing sensation doesn't quench it at all. It only grows to worse.
