Tale One Hundred: Glad Tidings

Image

As waves and winds and clouds go passing by,
From Amia to distant sea and sky,
They leave us all behind here in our home,
The city folk and those who merely roam,
The visitors and local families,
Below in caves and high above in trees.

And with our varied dreams and jobs and race,
We're all together in this time and place,
The settled sorts who've lived here many years,
The ones to whom this land just now appears,
And to the many that this land invites,
We send glad tidings down from Winya's heights.

To knights that steel and holy vow surrounds,
In Kohlingen and on their many rounds,
To rogues and sneaks avoiding light of day,
Who try to live in night and make their way,
To bards who wander trails here and there,
As new-found songs and stories fill the air.

To brave adventurers who risk it all,
And take the road to chase adventure's call,
And to the commoners who watch them go,
In safety now but dreaming even though,
And wondering what lies just out of view,
Glad tidings down from Winya to you too.

The druids in their over-trodden wood,
Who are so often so mis-understood,
By those from cities that come passing through,
Who wander by not knowing what they do,
And to those ones who stop to listen there,
And of the balance start to be aware.

And to the guards in cities where they live,
Who to their neighbors peace and safety give,
Who balance justice with a gentle hand,
And try to make the guests there understand,
And patiently they reach a happy few,
Glad tidings from our Winyan home to you.

And to those souls who've lived here for so long,
Who've seen so much and been here all along,
But even so go out and see the land,
Who meet new souls and lend a helping hand,
And while so many friends left long ago,
They meet and greet the new folk even though.

And most of all to new arrivals here,
To you these lands of ours just now appear,
So much that kept us here awaits you now,
These lands so much excitement still allow,
And as you follow where your futures call,
Glad tidings down from Winya to you all!

Tale One Hundred One: The Butterfly Song

Image

Fair Winya is in Winter's hold
And filled with drifts of snow,
So coated, scarfed and mitten-ed
To Butterfly we'll go!

For even down in Winter's depths
Folk still come up the hill,
To buy some heated Winyan wine
And freely drink their fill!

And warm with warmed-up Winyan wine
You know they'll dance and sing,
They'll sing those elven drinking songs,
What happiness they bring!

And there we'll meet some travelers
Who came from far away,
They'll teach us how they dance back there
And learn the Winyan way!

And through the dancing, singing folk
Fair Febrien makes way,
She twirls round the dancers light
With bottles on her tray!

And all the night the fire burns
It warms us in its heat,
So we forget the winter cold
With wine and warmer feet!

For even in the snowy dark
There is a burning light,
The Butterfly in Winya town
Stays open all the night!

Tale One Hundred Two: The Crystal Lake

Image

The forest-green is all that's seen,
The sky is crystal-clear and clean,
The birds still sing their native song,
No knowledge of the world's wrong,
No thought of thoughts un-natural,
No tree-top homes to axes fall,
No hostile foe to waste it all,
Around the Crystal Lake.

Where forest canopy gives way,
And down comes sunshine in the day,
And then the stars with gentle light,
That soften hearts in gentle night,
And silver moon-light trickles down,
And shimmers soft on forest ground,
As midnight mists the land surround,
Around the Crystal Lake.

And even in these latter days,
The elves still walk the pathless ways,
To sing their songs in elven rhymes,
Remembering their ancient times,
With voices clear they fill the night,
With lute-strings low and harp-strings light,
A solemn sound and sacred sight,
Around the Crystal Lake.

And fish that live in waters deep,
Arise from their unthreatened sleep,
And swim up peacefully and free,
To see the sky as we do sea,
And day dream of the birds above,
To be a hawk or gentle dove,
And look down on the home they love,
Around the Crystal Lake.

Tale One Hundred Three: The Longer Road

Image

While sitting warm and safe by fireside,
At home or in a tavern safe inside,
The tales of the changers of the past,
Are often in great glories golden cast,
And fill up hearts with inspiration's burn,
And for that golden glory people yearn.

But in their rush to reach the gloried end,
The storytellers rarely do descend,
To all the sweat and toil in-between,
To all the pain and labor that was seen,
That folk in stories saw along the way,
To reach their goals and make a better day.

For more than end results that stories hold,
These struggles are important to be told,
For making lasting changes costs a price,
That for a glory-seeker won't suffice,
A price that's paid out daily, patiently,
When storytellers aren't around to see.

And more than work for individuals,
A group of friends and allies this work calls,
To help the ones who bear these heavy loads,
To walk together down these longer roads,
A host of help to guard against the fray,
Who mirror those who'll benefit some day.

For changers must be guarded as they go,
From those who fight to keep the status quo,
Who never room for others will allow,
As high Corellon still commands us now:
Take ward against the ones who only take,
The ones destroying what they cannot make.

Tale One Hundred Four: Terzaroch at Winya's Gates

Image

The Nexus Hills alone above the Falls,
Stood then without the crown of Winyan walls,
No elven guard or elven revels seen,
Upon the empty Nexus grasses green,
Above the Nexus waterfalls revered,
In days before fair Winya reappeared.

For centuries ago there was a fight,
Foul Terzaroch the Foe with all his might,
Attacked the city with his fiendly force,
And in the battle's ancient, deadly course,
The queen and her king-consort Adavar,
Sent Winya to a pocket-plane afar.

And in its distant plane the town survived,
But in the centuries since they arrived,
The wards that sent them there began to fade,
The spirit of the queen looked then for aid,
To help them when the city reappeared,
For Terzaroch would come again she feared.

She sent for Theos and the druids then,
But with her calls unanswered once again,
She called to her a distant descendant,
Good Floriane, who to the planes was sent,
And there the spirit of the queen foretold,
That all their Winyan wards not long could hold.

And in due course the city reappeared,
And as the queen and Adavar had feared,
Foul Terzaroch had never gone away,
Awoken by the base Ve'heers one day,
And all who would defend fair Winya then,
Knew that he would come soon and try again.

But at the shrine of fair Eilistraee,
Still at the Grove in those days peacefully,
Good Floriane, her student Delya,
Jud'vardas and the mighty Ravena,
Were speaking there with Erelkacha too,
When legendary sights came into view!

Fair Kacha came to be divine possessed,
And by Eilistraee all four were blessed,
And some were given weapons by her hand,
The likes of which have never graced our land,
And so the five prepared themselves to go,
To guard fair Winya from its fiendly foe!

And at the gate the spirit of the Queen,
Told them that Terzaroch she had foreseen,
And to prepare themselves before the fight,
Which sure would come with morning's rosy light,
And all stood guard before the city gate,
When Terzaroch arrived to claim his fate!

And towering above the five he stood,
And boasted of himself as best he could,
But all the heroes would not be deterred,
By fiendly boast or empty, bragging word,
So drawing blades with Kacha standing back,
The heroes braced and charged in to attack!

And then all faced the searing hellbourne flame!
It burned their eyes as near to him they came,
And in the heat his trident struck out true,
And struck against the heroes charging through,
While Kacha as the goddess avatar,
Called magic healing on them from afar!

But then the devil struck out with his hand,
And cast swift Delya down to the land!
Jud'vardas saw, and sprinted bravely out,
And took a mortal wound, but with a shout,
He swung his blade with all his dying might,
And severed off the devil's arm outright!

So seeing their two friends upon the ground,
Ravena and good Floriane surround,
And striking at the foe he staggered down,
And fell at last with terrifying sound,
Then running up Ravana raised her blade,
And with a final blow the devil slayed!

And with the heroes brought to life at last,
The Queen and Adavar began to pass,
With given gifts for heroism shown,
Their final words for heroes' ears alone,
Their mighty aid at least was called no more,
And off they went to holy Arvandor.

And so the city came to peace again,
And elves began to move to Winya then,
Their city back after the centuries,
But even now the safety that it sees,
Was bought for us by that heroic band,
And fair Eilistraee's heavenly hand!

Tale One Hundred Five: Simple Sunlight

Image

Among the many daily things
In days that pass behind,
The little things you daily do
Are what stays in my mind.

The way you fix your hair and clothes,
Your footsteps in the sand,
Your chuckle at a silly joke,
The softness of your hand.

Such things so easily can fade
As busy days go by,
But know they never slip unseen
And ever reach my eye.

Such warmth and light come to my life
From all the things you do,
As when the clouds break open wide
And sun comes shining through.

All chill and darkness disappears
In golden rays above,
In all that simple sunlit warmth,
That comes from all your love.

And unlike sun that fades at dusk
Your sunlight stays with me,
As days and moons and years go by,
Such happiness I'll see.

And to Hanali now I pray
That I can do this too,
To be the sun you are for me
And warm the days for you.

Tale One Hundred Six: The Leaves and the Tree

Image

Caesyli's palms rise up to touch the tree,
And with her eyes closed tight she still can see,
Then to the Many-Branched she starts to pray,
And speaking silent spells she slips away,
Away and deeper into Nature there,
And of its words and ways becomes aware.

She tells of how the trees are ancient here,
And all their ancient words she now can hear,
The lifetimes even of the long-lived elves,
Pass by like single seasons for themselves,
A slow, higher way of life they live,
More civilized than settlements could give.

But in the face of such antiquity,
Our mortal pettiness is plain to see,
A look at all our short-lived lives confronts,
The lack of time and insignificance,
What works and deeds of ours could matter now?
What meaning could our fleeting lives allow?

A look back to the past supports that view,
The forests gone when guarding plans fell through,
And cherished homes that thrived in distant days,
Are ruins now and barely draw our gaze,
And even fair Myth Drannor in its prime,
Was left behind by endless-marching time.

But though we live such short and fleeting lives,
Still some of what we mortals do survives!
While some day all of us will surely pass,
Our families and people yet will last,
As leaves that feed their tree some day will fall,
But through their deeds the tree can now stand tall!

The lives of leaves at first seem short and small,
And yet the tree can't live without them all,
Like them we all affect the greater whole,
To benefit the group should be our role,
To teach our children balance, right and wrong,
Will rightly feed the tree and make it strong.

For much of who we are today was learned,
From those who for the group were once concerned,
And those we learned it from once learned it too,
From someone in the past, far from our view,
And even if we never learn their name,
That long-passed life still matters just the same.

So much of what once was has passed away,
And yet our people still survive today!
The length of life to us won't matter now,
If better lives to others we allow,
Mistakes corrected, knowledge passed along,
Makes lives of worth and makes our people strong.

If we can somehow live our lives like this,
Our final mortal day can pass in bliss,
Like short-lived leaves that fed this ancient tree,
We too can fall and rest then peacefully,
Our touch still on our people when we're gone,
And through those souls we bettered we'll live on.

Tale One Hundred Seven: Library Adventures

Image

The library is silent now
As libraries should be,
And in the silence dreaming minds
Can read and wander free!

For like a seed in fresh-tilled ground
Imagination grows,
And in the fertile silence here
Into adventure goes!

Then prose like river-water's flow,
Will carry you adrift,
Through gentle, peaceful forest creeks
Or raging rapids swift!

Then iambs in pentameter
And speedy couplets too,
Let poets sing immortal songs
And share them all with you!

Then reading you are set in flight
And soaring in your mind,
You live out many life-times there
With worries far behind!

For what we see while dreaming dreams
Can make us something new,
And changed by dreams we make our lives
A little better too!

Tale One Hundred Eight: With You

Image

What day-light does to darkened night,
You do for me at just your sight,
And difficult as days have been,
They all turn simple once again,
My loneliness evaporates,
In all the warmth your touch creates,
My laugh and cheer you swift renew,
When I can be with you.

The ocean waves don't threaten then,
No sea-borne squalls to storm again,
Instead the water beckons bright,
The sea-waves dance in sunshine's light,
The waters then connect us all,
As distant lands and futures call,
Our happy life comes clear to view,
When I am there with you.

And storm-clouds ever-threatening,
With all the thunder that they sing,
Bring only meek and mellow mist,
To thirsty lands bring cure and bliss
To leaves below from high tree-tops,
It trickles down in gentle drops,
Received by all so gratefully,
When you walk there with me.

This house of ours of wood and stone,
Is merely make-shift means alone,
Materials at most until,
Your presence warms its lifeless chill,
And brings its spirit clear to view,
And makes a family from two,
And makes our house a home anew,
When I am there with you.

Tale One Hundred Nine: Cloudsong

Image

The early spring-time clouds go sailing by,
Within the newly blue and warmer sky,
And with the blue-gray clouds come golden rays,
Together bringing life to spring-time days,
Replacing winter's clouds so bleak and cold,
That hold us all too long within their hold.

On clear and quiet days they float aloof,
Their white and wispy forms on winter's roof,
Too cold and dry, too far away to care,
No flakes of snow to fall below they bare,
Just sailing on, withdrawn, above the land,
As far below with up-turned heads we stand.

Then as we wake as winter morning breaks,
A thicker form the chilly weather takes,
The skies abound in crowds of snowy clouds,
And softened greys more often day enshrouds,
Then quietly the sky turns snowy white,
And fills our sight with slow-flakes slow in flight.

But now as spring returns the snow is rare,
The clouds bear rain instead in warmer air,
And gather up in swarms of mass in storms,
That clash, colliding in their mighty forms,
With booming thunder shaking all around,
And bolts of lightning flashing to the ground.

Then comes the rain that storm-clouds can't contain,
It cleanses clean all winter's weary stain,
And brings to trees and plants their spring-time bloom,
It re-fills lakes and makes the streams resume,
It lifts the idle gloom of colder days
And wakes us from the winter's quiet daze.

Then rain-clouds cease their fall and call back peace,
The captive sun the breaking clouds release,
And through the breaks pour shafts of golden light,
The skies from lightning's threat turn gently bright,
As storm-clouds drift on down their sky-ward way,
To bring their rain to others far away.

Tale One Hundred Ten: Roadsong

Image

Today is free from duties full
From worried, hurried work,
No busy blurry dizzy days
No flurried labors lurk!

A day to spend how I intend,
And so I fill my pack,
With drifter's cares and nomad's wares
And sling it on my back!

To walk the road with lighter load
And free-time free to fill,
Is such a smooth and sunny task
A calm and cheerful thrill!

The way I start I know by heart
But with no work in mind,
The old is new and fresh I find
As down the way I wind!

And passing by I pass my eye
Down ways I've never walked,
No ways are blocked by work today
No doors by labors locked!

How sweet to take an un-known street
With sights I've never seen,
The finding finds, the feeling lost
And all that's in-between!

And still there wait new roads to take
Where feet have yet to tread,
With all that's passed in busy past
There's always more ahead!
