Preface: What is a Seasa'Tyaro? In this modern world, we face many changes on what might seem a daily basis. New lands are being discovered or re-discovered in rapid succession. Intrepid academics are introducing new and powerful ways to manipulate magics. Politicians and warriors are striving for control over the lands to varying degrees. Among all the battle cries and scholars' lectures, between the whispered nervousness at rising crime and the bawdy laughter of apathetic citizens, where do the people of Toril go to find relief and escape to a realm of dreams?

In every city one may find taverns of all quality, from the Bad Dragon Inn in Uhn , to the Nomad's Return in Cordor . Private clubs and inns multiply and offer a variety of services to all from the farmer to the highest of powerful entities. Every tavern has its entertainment, but a Seasa'Tyaro is far more than a simple bar wench, and is generally not employed by any single establishment unless she wishes to be so. In this writing, I hope to give a hint as to what this nearly extinct tradition entails.

Seasa'Tyaro is a term derived from the ancient elven language. It literally means "Pleasure Artist", but the nuances given in antiquity have been misconstrued in modern times to have less than tasteful connotations. "Pleasure" is not to be taken as the crass or lewd, rather it is to be seen as what entertains, comforts, amuses and warms the spirit. A 'Tyaro is indeed an artist outside of carnality; rather she is a creature of beauty and mystery, of grace and joy.

This is not to say a 'Tyaro is to take vows of chastity, but this will be a subject approached in later lessons. A 'Tyaro's world exists alongside the mundane world, weaving dreams and fantasy between work, war and politics in an intricate and alluring dance.

The successful 'Tyaro has become herself a living work of art, beautiful and ethereal, nearly a creature of myth and longing to be appreciated in all sensual manners. They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but to say a Seasa'Tyaro's beauty is solely in her appearance is to insult her greatly. A true 'Tyaro's beauty lies more than skin deep, and is merely a forward expression of the delight of her soul, offered to the public to share in her world if but for a brief moment.

Welcome to the shadowed mystery of a Seasa'Tyaro.

~*~Chapter One~*~

From Humble Beginnings

Tradition commonly places the veil of a Seasa'Tyaro upon strictly female shoulders, and so it shall be in the feminine tense that these lessons shall be written. This is not to say that males were not or can not be a Seasa'Tyaro, but such masculine gems were rare indeed. Many lessons may be applied to a male, however there are some differences although they will not be deliberately touched on within these pages.

In history, poor human (and a rare few elven) families were sometimes known to offer their pretty and young daughters to noble houses as indentured servants, with the hopes that by doing so the children could escape both abject poverty and threat of slavery by unscrupulous souls. At some indefinable point, whether by grace of a rich land owner or by sheer will of one raised in such luxurious surroundings, there came to be something of a desire to see some of the cleverer servants educated and trained to be more personal attendants.

The earliest Seasa'Tyaro were in fact considered rather pet like, the echos of which can be seen even today in the caste of Courtesans or even the elusive drow Xi'Hum. This 'pet' status may become part of a 'Tyaro's lifestyle even today in the form of a Patron, or "Heru". but the nuances and pointed differences between a slave pet's Master and a Patron are enough to warrant their own chapter later on.

As time wore on and these indentured servants were seen as household treasures, Houses began to train their "pleasures" in unique ways. By calling in instructors to encourage and build on the hints of talent these servants showed, one House might end up with a lovely dancer whose swaying hips could intoxicate a rival into an amiable agreement over land with her Master. Another House might show off their story teller who wove tales with as much skill as any spider in her web. Yet another House might boast a young woman with a demure smile and sly eyes whose riddles kept the nobles enthralled for hours, trying to out "smart" each other in guessing the answers.

At some point that no one really can pin down, the well kept and decorative servant moved from a private House environment and into a more socially accessible venue. At this time is when the term Seasa'Tyaro came into being, and she was sought after now by nobles as well as wealthy merchant classes for an evening's companionship and entertainment. For a modest half hourly sum, or "fallen petal fee", the wealthy and working-rich could employ a woman as genteel and well-heeled as any noblewoman, but as charming and graciously entertaining as a sweetheart, with perhaps just a hint of low tavern doxie to titillate.

Nowadays, without a census to advise of the true number of Seasa'Tyaro in Toril, this humble author can only surmise from her own training and assume there are others out there, perhaps under different titles. However, there are numerous standards that are to be consistent in any student of this particular artistry.

*We are to be well read, able to write, speak and comprehend at least three languages we were not born to.

*We are to know at least one musical instrument.

*We are to know songs and stories of educational, emotional, and even raunchy subject matter.

*We are to maintain knowledge of the popular dances as well as the respected standbys of yesteryear.

* We are to keep abreast of current political, social and religious topics while at the same time being able to avoid being sensationalistic or argumentative.

*We are to accommodate our clients and our surroundings, blending both their wants and our personalities into one beautiful experience.

Finally, we are to be strong within. Beauty is nothing if it masks a spirit that is shallow, cowardly and false, and it is with this in mind that we shall come to our next lesson.
