Quote:
The book is clad in leather and dyed to resemble bleached bone. The title Finis omnium is stenciled into the spine of the book. The front bears the symbol of the skull with a scroll in its mouth. Giving the reader a understanding of what it might hold.

All people have an eternal resting place chosen for them at the moment of their creation. Life is a process of seeking that place and eternal rest. Existence is but a brief aberration in an eternity of death.
Death is absolute and only at its appointed hour. Strive to bring order in the chaos of life, for in death there is finality and a consistent state.
Be ready for death for it is at hand. Neither good nor evil it is instead fair and uncompromising. Undeath is not an escape or a reward; it is a duty given a chosen few of The Lord of Bones.

The Church

Serving as scribes, funerary workers and morticians the priests of Jergal known as the Scriveners of Doom, spent their days maintaining and extending vast archives of knowledge listing the passing of sentients and their destination in the afterlife. Ranks and titles mean little meaning to the scriveners with the exception of the high priest in each congregation, holding the title of First Scrivener of Doom.

The orders of the church of Jergal

Within the faith there are two known orders, of which one had a presence in this enclave in the days of long ago: The Companions of the Pallid Mask and the Hand of Jergal.
The Companions were a group of specially trained priests for the purpose of commanding and to combat the unliving. They would seek out and destroy any unliving not sanctioned by the church or those which had become troublesome. The second task of the Companions was to maintain and oversee the undead work forces the church surrounded itself with. Making sure the temples and crypts were in good shape.

The Hand of Jergal was an elite group of devout priests who led others under their command to execute justice upon those who had wronged the church of Jergal. They acted against those of other faiths who brought the dead back to the living without paying due tribute to The Lord of Bones or those who violated or looted any tomb under the protection of the church.

The Night of Another Year

On the last night of the year, the 30th of Nightal, the clergy cease their endless toil for a full night. On this holy night known as the Night of Another Year, we pass in procession to a crypt, mausoleum, or graveyard carrying all the scrolls and books containing every name whose death we have recorded over the past year. At midnight each priest begins reading aloud every name whose death they have recorded over the past year. When the last name is intoned, all the priests shall invoke Jergal, proclaiming “One year ended; one year closer,” three times, bow their heads, and return to their duties, taking the scrolls and books to be properly filed.
