The Oath of Diligence and Care

“I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant:
I will respect the hard-won gains of those Engineers in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow.
I will apply, for the benefit of everyone, all measures that are required, avoiding the twin traps of negligence and narrow-mindedness.
I will remember that there is art to architecture as well as alchemy, and that knowledge, and understanding may outweigh the Mason’s trial pen or the Metalworker’s hammer.
I will not be ashamed to say “I know not,” nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a holistic solution.
I will remember that I do not maintain a single district. Every element of Cordor is connected to the city as a whole. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to provide adequately for people’s needs.
I will remember to keep the grip of Talona at bay, fighting vermin that bloat and swell on the excesses of civilised existence - to prevent disease before it strikes. To the betterment of our glorious Commonwealth.
I will not waste materials, preferring to reuse what I can and recycle what I can’t. Above all, I will use quality materials and superior craftsmanship.
I will spread my knowledge whenever I can, for preventing problems is preferable to fixing failures.
I will not build to make a name for myself, but to make the world a better place to live in.
I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow commonwealth citizens, those sound of mind and body as well as the impaired.
If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and it’s pleasures, respected while I live and remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my profession.”

Arms of the Guilde

Sewer Wardens

Since the establishment of the Guilde, and the realisation that the outflows and external grates of the sewers presented a risk of aquatic and subterranean invasion. The Sewer Wardens were formed from members of the Cordor Guard. Initially trained by Haur of Haur’s Smithy in the rudiments of Dwarven Tunnel Fighting. Over the years, Cordor Guard Training has included all elements of ‘the basics’ a Sewer Warden needs to fight in the cramped sewer channels.
In latter years the posting is seen by the Cordor Guard as a punishment. The HGDS is attempting to rectify that this is an important and crucial part of the Cordor defense.

Famously in Guilde History, these battles live on in infamy:-

The Great Rat Plague of 1378DR
The Kobold Incursions of 1369 & 72DR

Without the Wardens, surely the city would have fallen to disease and depravity.

Drainage Engineers

Known colloquially as the Cordor Sewer Cleaners, these fine men and women infact perform far more than simple cleaning duties.

Stonemasons.
Architectural Engineers.
Trapsmiths.
Metalworkers.

These are all trades synonymous with our work crews. Maintaining the City of Water’s ancient, unique foundations and maintaining sewers which are themselves surrounded by sea-water is no easy feat. Thus our workers must be more skilled and knowledgeable than your average Kohlingen serf.

Ranks Include:-
Drainage Engineer, 1st Class
Drainage Engineer
Junior Drainage Engineer

[Edit]: After the creation of the new Ministry of Work and Labour, major foundation and structural duties have been removed from Engineer responsibility and taken over by a Specialist Inspection Team under direct Ministry governance. Regardless, diligence in the tunnels and chambers of Central Cordor must be maintained. Many of our tunnels back onto the seawalls, and we must work closely with the Inspection Teams to ensure the Shattering does not have an adverse effect on the supported sections of the city.
Further information provided later in this manuscript.

Cordor Sewers: District Maps

West Sub-Level

Image

West Cordor stands amid the most architecturally brilliant of Cordor’s subterranean sewers.
A credit to the genius of the d’Cordor line, the dockside tunnels are fitted with drains and overflows. That if the harbor wall is ever breached in natural disaster, or conflict, sections of the tunnels will flood and then via a series of counterweights drain the water forcibly back out of what tunnels remain functional - in an attempt to slow any sink-age the district may encounter. The large arena has numerous sub-levels which all drain down into main reservoir - keeping sewage and filth away from the channels which provide drinking water; via the well.
There is a service exit on the North Western water channel, which leads up to a walkway running around the City Wall towards the Western Gate and outskirts. There is also the main drainage channel, which leads to a cesspit beneath the swamps. All pipes and channels carrying waste converge here; leading the tunnels beyond to be the most treacherous and rancid. Periodically large pipes pump seawater into the channel - flooding the passage beyond to wash the filth away into the already stagnant waters of the bog. These exits are maintained and watched by a routine patrol of Sewer Wardens.

Central Sub-Level

Image

Central Cordor’s tunnels and walls must be carefully maintained and inspected, this section of the city once housed many nobles and officials as such the sewers were catered toward providing service for the many larger homes and estates. There were two large main service pipe-lines. Each running parallel either side of what was once the Grande Canal.
Now, many of the sewerage tunnels and canals on the South-Central side are either completely flooded - and subsequently closed off. The one main channel that survives is little more than a self-contained service tunnel. What used to be streets above it are now simply sea-water.
This surviving tunnel is a priority for service work and maintenance as it shows evidence of stress fractures and cracks in the wake of the Shattering. Beneath it is submerged access to what was once the primary support pile for the South-Central marine boulevard. This example of Cordor’s magnificent architecture now only serves to support the sewers and service tunnels which sit above it.

East Sub-Level

Image

East Cordor’s tunnels stretch beneath what has always been the cultural heart of the Old Commonwealth. It’s many pipelines and side-chambers service businesses, temples and the City Hall itself. There are two main spinal walkways through which sewage flows, the incline of the tunnels begins here, marking the highest point beneath the peninsula which houses the long-standing Cordor map-room.
The flow of water that starts here, carries the waste through a series of pump-chambers and canals west-ward to the main-drainage channel and cesspit in the West Sub-Level.

The most significant item of note is the complex pumping station beneath the district's central canalway, beneath the area which houses the Statue of Lord Montgomery and the Old Pillars of Law.
Water from here is processed and cleaned by a series of filters, before flowing back into the main channel at a gentle current. This cycling process keeps the contained water channel from becoming stagnant and rancid. Must be inspected, and serviced on a three-monthly rotation.

South Sub-Level

Image

The South Sub-Level is the only area of Cordor completely supported by piles. These great pillars of ironwood and limestone plunge down into the seabed and hold the district aloft from the sea. The tidal countermeasures are in place here, as in Cordor West. Beneath the sewers here, lies the Southern Main Support Pile - which dwells in a secure area beneath the South Watch Tower.
This is regularly checked over by the Specialist Ministry Inspection Team. However, Drainage Engineers are encouraged to keep an eye on the surrounding architecture and diligently maintain and service the tunnels.
The district has a central sewage line, with a waterwheel contained pump-station. As the tide flows beneath the district, the wheel is turned. Pumping the waste north into the main sub-canals and pipelines to be carried west to the main outflow.

The Bestiary

Our jobs are not risk-free. Contained in the following chapter are the commonly found hostile creatures that dwell in the Sewers.
Heed these warnings well, as well as the signs of their presence. It could save your life.

As always, if a large scale infestation is noted - inform the Sewer Wardens immediately.

[Edit]: Updated in last edition. Advise study by all Guilde members new or pre-existing.

Rats

Sewer Rat
The Rat is synonymous with the very mention of the sewer. You will wage an endless struggle against the population of these creatures. No matter how many traps we spring, and how many fall beneath our efforts - there will always be more.
These omnivorous rodents can thrive in almost any environment, and have an alarming tendency to fall prey to environmental effects and magical zones.
Generally, only a swarm of the smaller variants will cause an alert person true danger - but any bites or scratches should be treated at the earliest opportunity. They feast on waste and scavenge on carcasses. Disease is the hidden threat.
Large nests can occur in piles of waste and filth, the signs of their passing - no matter the variety are the prolific amount of droppings, and a distinctly sharp scent of urine - which is sadly difficult to detect in the sewer environment. Should you find a nest, approach with a team of your fellows, or Wardens. They must be burnt, occasionally with alchemical fire.

There are two other forms of Rat you should be wary of:-

Engorged Rats

Engorged Rats become abnormally large, some say they feast in sections near the outflow pipes from the Blueskies Academy, or are simply unusually large examples of normal sewer rats.
Regardless, these creatures are easily the size of a small dog, without the tail.
They can tend to carry a potent bite, so always check your wounds for signs of infection after fighting one of these creatures. Smaller rats become bold near their larger cousins, often displaying no fear of humanoids when hungry. Expect these large rats to lead small swarms of vermin.
Occasionally you will come face to face with the Greater Engorged Rats. These bloated, filthy creatures are even larger than normal. Given the bulk and size - some suspect interbreeding with the dreaded Dire Rat.

Dire Rat

The size of a war-dog and noted for displaying a small ridge of boney outcroppings or pointed spines which start at the head and continue toward the tail. Particularly exceptional creatures have known to grow four-feet long. These creatures see little distinction between a man and another soft meal - always engage in pairs.
Due to the prolific nature of rats, when noted the Dire Rat should always be reported. Should a large swarm of these creatures be allowed to cultivate; it could take large-scale action to put down.

-----

Kobolds

The Lizardmen of the Swamps appear to have completely enslaved the local Kobold population.
The presence of exceptional examples of these creatures, wearing clothes and moving about the city like a civilised man can make the matter of dealing with the creatures frustratingly sensitive!
Occasionally, the savage variety spurred on by their larger scaled overlords will sneak into the tunnels and attempt to sow chaos. They’ll set traps, and ambushes.
It is due to this, that the Western District tends to have the most dedicated patrols of Sewer Wardens, who will deal with most of these creatures.
If you see a Kobold in the tunnels, assume it to never be alone - and to engage with caution.
Due to the complication of the occasional ‘friendly’ creature, use your best judgement before you resort to violence.
We have yet to see the creatures attempt to form a colony in the sewers, but keep your eyes open for any strange occurrences.

-----

Carrion Crawlers

Capable of growing up to nine-feet long and with a many-legged alien appearance, the Carrion Crawler is a monster that gives many men pause before a shift.
It’s capable of stripping an area of life, which is the main sign of its presence in the tunnels. They’ll strip an area of organic matter - should you find any bones or stone with strange needle-like scratches too close-together and numerous to be a rat’s work…. You may be nearby a Crawler.
The most dangerous part about them, is their venom which they can transfer from both their head-tendrils or their disgusting jaws. Never engage a crawler alone, once their prey is immobile - they’ll begin to feed. Be you dead or alive.
Fire is your ally against these abominations, their instinctual response is to flee from it.
They make nests filled with bloated, silky cocoons which house their eggs. If you find a nest, burn it and smash the eggs - but be wary, the moment the eggs are broken they emit a truly vile stench; which lures any crawler in the area back to defend their young. Preparation is the key to survival. If you find a large nest, enlist the aid of the Sewer Wardens.

-----

Oozes

Thankfully a rarer sight than the other creatures here, these amorphous, featureless scavengers can be daunting foes. They feed by attempting to lunge at their prey, and let their forms engulf them. If these things wrap around your legs, beyond their outer membrane their forms are acidic. Within seconds your skin will start to blister and within minutes start to dissolve. The only thing they can’t digest is bone and metal - but they’ll try regardless.
If you see an area stripped clean, with only a strange mucus-like substance clinging to the cobbles - you may be near an Ooze.
In our climate the most common type of creature is the ‘Ochre Jelly’. Thankfully a smaller variety, but none-the-less dangerous.

Things to remember when engaging an ooze:

They reproduce by splitting in two. If you use a bladed weapon, you’ll just make multiple creatures. Use a mace, quarterstaff or club.
It’s very touch is acidic, some potions or spells can negate this.
It will try to engulf your legs, to prevent escape. Never fight an ooze alone.
Like with the carrion crawler, fire is your friend. But they are naturally resistant to acid, and acid traps.

Adventurers tell tales of large terrifying oozes capable of filling tunnels with their sheer mass. If you see anything like this. Run away. Do not engage. Inform the Wardens, or Guard at once.

Procedures and Duties

Sewer Wardens

The duties of the Sewer Wardens are Governed in general by the Cordor Guard.
Though without exception their primary duty is to guard the more vulnerable approaches to the sewers, and assist in the extermination of invaders and the more dangerous vermin that can be encountered in the Sewers.
This may extend to aquatic attackers if an emissary of the Bitch Queen should make demands on her Holy Day.

---

Alert Status: Crisis
A crisis alert is issued when the seawall is breached, and the tunnels are experiencing uncontrollable flooding. The standard action is to activate the failsafes, and exit with extreme prejudice.
If failsafes fail it is up to the individuals present if they wish to stay and try to repair them, or flee.
Valor in the face of peril, is awarded.

---

Alert Status: Red
The city is under attack by an outside force, lockdown the nearest exterior exits, and evacuate. Sewer Wardens are to head to their designated defense points, and prepare to defend the city.
Valor in the face of peril, is awarded.
