DwD beyond level 5 or 6 is pointless if you're not opting for the beefy Epic Damage Reduction feats. That, of course, deprives your McHaggisbutt of its protein rich diet. I'd recommend something along the lines of Fighter20/DwD6/Dumpling4 to make the most of it and still have a solid build. Also, hate to say this, but the Resist Energy feats aren't of any contribution to your character as they don't stack with other sources of elemental damage resistance, i.e. items.

Actually its not, you can go Str based 18 DwD rather easily and the DwD reduction being 12 with the addition of resistance and immunity items will put your damage reduction around ~20. Careful choice of elemental reduction and you can shed over the better part of half of any incoming flat damage and be a bit more tanky against criticals.

Hmm. I tried a CON soak DwD before but ended up just dying a lot as a lowbie.

Regards, Elemental Damage pics? Switching to Acid and/or Electro? Any tips in that regard Mosh?

Got an Arcane Archer question: does anyone ever start as Druid instead of Ranger or Fighter?

You'd lose a little on AB, but gain a monster of a pet and potentially much better spells. So in PvM at least, you could fire less attacks per round but from relative soloing safety.

If you go Wild Elf and get Sorcerer as the preferred, you could go:

Druid 19 / Sorc 1 / AA 10

Str 14
Dex 11 (Wild elf ->13)
Con 6 (Wild elf ->8)
Int 12 (Wild elf ->10)
Wis 18
Cha 12

This would give you the 13 Dex for rapid shot, and then Zen Archery switches your to-hit to Wisdom, which as a Druid can be the one you increase through levels/feats.

With the ability to have a horribly buffed pet, high-level summons and stand at the back with a bow which does actual damage, is this viable when you lose the AB from using Ranger or Fighter instead? Would you take more AA levels at +1 each to make up for it? (It'd be 10th level before you could qualify for AA, I think? But Elven druids can get Weapon Proficiency Longbow, so it's possible.)

I guess the question is: Is 19 Druid a waste of time in terms of people resisting your spell DCs, or if you concentrate on buffs and non-targetted spells, could the AA levels add useful stuff?

Fire is one of the ones I typically pic if I go with Resist Energy (ie my EDR3 CON/STR barbarian with mighty and terrifying rages, later in the build, will have resist energy since I had a spare feat). It also helps out against basic flame weapon scrolls, and is good for those dwaves that want to try to flush out Fire Giants! Haha, take that you boggarts!

Right now in my build I'm going with Great Cleave again and have one spare feat. I think I'll be munching Resists Energy: Fire.

Either go 11 aa to.get the +5 shots or maximize your druidness and just use the aa to add some ab. Is recommend 24 druid 1 bard and 5 aa actually. Let's u get epic spells a great pet and dispell immunity longer duration. I just think its better as a caster to actually be a caster.

You only need 9 AA levels for Enchant Arrow V. I agree with 24 Druid/1 Bard/5 AA, though. If you don't care for that dispel immunity, get a 2nd bard level later on for skill dumps. Extended blood frenzies are really nice, too - your AB would be quite decent in the end.

So on the topic of sick dwarven defender builds, I thought of this:

Monk(15), Dwarven Defender(14), Rogue(1), Dwarf

STR: 13 (16)
DEX: 13
CON: 18 (22)
WIS: 12
INT: 12
CHA: 8

01: Monk(1): Dodge
03: Monk(3): Weapon Focus: Unarmed
09: Monk(9): Toughness
12: Dwarven Defender(2): Improved Critical: Unarmed
15: Dwarven Defender(5): Blind Fight
18: Dwarven Defender(8): Skill Focus: Discipline
21: Dwarven Defender(11): Epic Weapon Focus: Unarmed
24: Dwarven Defender(14): Epic Damage Reduction I, Armor Skin
27: Monk(13): Epic Damage Reduction II
30: Monk(15): Epic Damage Reduction III

Craft Armor 31(32), Craft Weapon 31(32), Discipline 33(39), Tumble 30(31), UMD 16(15)

Rather simple build, but with potentially disgusting results. HP and AB is only slightly less, though the AC is jacked higher with the Monk levels. Unarmed over Kama since there is little room for Ambidex and TWF, plus Ambidex requires 15 DEX and a DEX-based DWARVEN monk/DwD sounds retarded and gross. Also did not want to go 20 Monk to avoid the eyes thing, and because moar DR is cooler.

Thoughts? Also, is this reasoning (for my original Fighter/DwD/Rogue build) sound?

Would I be correct in assuming this Resist Energy will not work nicely with EDR? :(

Also, what about DwD DR? Would it technically be considered a feat since NWN lists stuff like that on the feat menu?

No, that would be incorrect. Resist Energy and Damage Reduction feats have nothing to do with each other.

Thank God. They fucking make it so complicated. Reduction and Resistance, I mean.

Also, does that go for DwD DR as well?

Was sure I had the problem of unstackiness with one of my characters before, but guess I was wrong. Thanks for making us less oblivious.

And goodness me, I shouldn't be posting in this thread after such a protracted hiatus from Amia.

While I'm asking about archers:

Is there a viable archer build which isn't AA? Or do they all need the AA's +5s to make it work at all?

I'm having huge trouble getting any damage out. Tempted to go for Fighter's weapon spec and epic weapon spec longbow just to get a +6 on dam. Apart from str bonus on mighty bows, is something like Bard Song the only way to boost it?

I realise archer damage isn't great in NWN, but so far mine are terrible.

An Epic Rogue or Assassin would probably manage alright.

15d6 Sneak Attack, or something silly like that, would certainly sting a bit.

You won't be able to match an AA's attack bonus, but with your other skills (Sneak/Lock/Trap), you'll have other strings to your bow. Zing.

You also wouldn't be limited to bows, either. YOu could pick something cooler like a crossbow or Throwing Knife.

Alternatively a Bane Ranger is pretty nice. And an epic pet adds to damage pretty nicely.

Also see cleric or druid with Zen archery... I also like barbarians archers and know a few great ideas for it.

Well, I like the survivability of the Druid with ZA (see the posts above) but I don't see where the extra damage is coming from, or if it's easy enough to get +5 arrows to bypass any +5/ damage reduction etc.

Mostly I just can't seem to add enough base damage to a ranged attacks.

A Druid doesn't really have the ability to get massive +damage effects. A Cleric gets Divine Might, Favour, etc, wheras instead you've got your furry little buddy and his Flaming +5 fangs. All part of the balancing act!

I'm curious on this idea now, please tell me throwing axe build. Been always wanting one, but with needing dex or wisdom for atb and the god awful weight of them never came up with a decent concept that be realistic til later levels with bags of holding.

Blood Frenzy
Imparts a bonus upon the caster for rounds/caster level, according to their level:

• CL 1 – 9 : +1 Attack Bonus, -1 penalty to AC
• CL 10 – 14 : +2 Attack Bonus, +1 Regeneration, -1 penalty to AC
• CL 15 – 19 : +3 Attack Bonus, +1 Regeneration
• CL 20 – 24 : +4 Attack Bonus, +1 Regeneration, +1 Damage Bonus
• CL 25 – 29 : +5 Attack Bonus, +2 Regeneration, +2 Damage Bonus
• CL 30 : +6 Attack Bonus, +2 Regeneration, +3 Damage Bonus, +1 to Universal Saving Throws

This plus adding greater magic weapon onto your bow or sling. Have one and a level 30druid archer is very sexy, its not that powerful, but instead of waiting for your summons to kill you get to add a slight bit of damage into the mix as well with a decent attack bonus as well.

I've got to be honest btw, I really don't like builds where you're not dumping all your increases into a single stat, but that's just me being a fuddy-duddy.

I recall at one point being told that improved crit would not work on vampire or wraith form, but you gain the feats unarmed weapon spec and improved crit unarmed in vampire form. So... was this simply an oversight or was I misinformed? Not really wanting to level all the way up that far to only realize my whole build is voided if I speced to be an unarmed vampire fighter.

You get improved crit and weapon spec in vampire form. If they don't work, poke people in the "bugs" thread. Regarding the wraith, it should benefit from the improved crit feat but ain't got a shifter with both unarmed crit and the undead shapes, so I can't test it.

Regarding the axe thrower, I made an axe master build with dev crit once. I believe it was Ftr 22/Bard 3/DD 5. It had epic weapon focus in both throwing axe and battleaxe. Ab with throwing axes would be 44 and 46 with battleaxe (epic prowess included), with around 60 AC.

If DD isn't your thing, then there are many other options. I assume a ranger would be perfect for throwing axes as well.. and barbarian, cleric etc. :P The higher your str, the better. Also lets you switch between ranged and melee neatly.

Can anyone share their thoughts on the effectiveness of a DwD with 21 DReduct (18 levels and EDR 3) versus Construct Shape - Stone Golem, i'd like to know how survivable a stone golem really is for a PvE point of view (excluding their obvious weakness of piercing weapons and sonic damage) if I can without putting in the game time.

Some key damage reducing stats:

Stone Golem:
50% immunity to bludgeoning
50% immunity to slashing
Immune to Critical
Immune to Knockdown
Immune to Sneak
10/+6 Damage Resistance (could be Damage Reduction, please confirm).

Dwarven Defender:
21/- Damage Reduction
Immune to Sneak when attacking.

Also, can anyone confirm the following:
- if Golems can pass through doors or if they remain stuck like Dragons?
- if buff potions, such as barkskin can be drunk whilst in Golem form?

Thanks.

Care to share your thoughts on the feats for a Sorcerer/Pale Master, focusing partly on making the hand ultimate evil?

I'm thinking Extend Spell will be a metamagic feat I can't go without. Perhaps a combat feat or two. I'm presuming the bone graft behaves as a regular attack however whether I can use finesse on my hand remains an enigma to me.

Rethink on that PM, Wiz/PM, in order to increase value of intelligence.

What would make for a good PM melee build? Mostly regarding feats and stat distribution?

It is I believe a touch attack not an actual attack.

Wizard/PM makes for a poor melee build, unless you decide to go for less than 10 PM levels, but I assume that is part of it, eh?

In any case, 23 wiz/4 pm/3 bg would work neatly, or perhaps 24 wiz/4 pm/2 (1 bab class, like fighter, DC etc. which both needs to be taken pre-epic for three attacks per round).

The four PM levels gives you +4 AC and two Greater Mummy summons a day, which is neat for flavor (they aren't that bad, and look cool). If you want 20 wiz/10 pm, you will have two attacks per round (three with haste) and very very easily be dispelled. No point in going less than 23 caster levels, when you are depending on your spells to make you able in combat.P

Nice, thanks for the feedback. Main reason for Wiz was because I actually want to focus on the bone graft, and that means high intelligence rather than high charisma. It's mostly a flavour thing. Feats/Ability distribution?

Also at Naivatkal's prodding, I am also making a drow cleric character, am thinking of taking Zen Archery and probably taking an arcane archer route. Haven't done one of these characters before either so any suggestions would be brilliant.

Okay folks, I decided I should make an Erevanian cleric and I might actually go through with it! The thing is, I know nothing about making clerics aside from caster clerics, and for a cleric of Erevan Ilesere I'd rather not use heavy armour.

So my first question... what are my options for cleric builds, other than caster, and what are the key things about building them? Special attention paid to any builds with better access to weird stuff and prank material (like spell effects and probably good skill access, though I can't actually think of anything specifically interesting to me at the moment). Maybe cleric/AA, depending on how that build works?

My second question... how would I manage a more lightly-armoured cleric (either light or medium armour, depending on which works better) without gimping myself too severely in the process?

Nice, thanks for the feedback. Main reason for Wiz was because I actually want to focus on the bone graft, and that means high intelligence rather than high charisma. It's mostly a flavour thing. Feats/Ability distribution?

You wouldn't have an skeletal arm with four levels of PM. That comes with six levels only. Your int should end on 20 and your str on either 18, 20 or 22 (or higher). Those three are probably the most common end stats. 16 wiz, 2 pm, 2 bg pre-epic for three APR and a nice saving throws boost. I actually forgot you won't have tumble, heh, but you gain +1 AC (overall with cross class tumble) anyhow from your PM levels, so it works out just fine.

A dex based cleric surely works. Hmm.. prank build. :P What to do, what to do. The cleric/bard/aa sounds just fine. You can either pick zen archer and have stronger spells, or go dex for cloth. Perhaps cleric 26/bard 1/AA 3. Otherwise a cleric 26/ranger 1/rogue 3 could be suitable as well. Not sure what classes you think is best suited.

The key things are ending your wisdom at 20 (if not going zen archery) and your secondary ability (dex) at 22, which is easily possible as an elf. Other than that you need to think about whether you wish to have a decent charisma (losing dex points) and use divine shield/might or focus on dex alone. Either should work. So, if you pick wis, dex and cha for the divine fun, you would likely be using medium armor (and likely zen archery), and wis and dex alone light armor.

Actually, if going for divine fun, you can manage with wis (and zen archery) and cha. You'd have less AC, but not THAT important with summons on your side.

If you prefer melee, dex would work too, since you gain some damage boosts from spells.

Alright, so which is more effective, a CON soak Dwarf Barb, or a STR-CON Fighter/DwD?

Thanks.

Just to add some more requests of information to this, can anyone fill in the gaps?

- Naked gear base stats for a Stone Golem (AC/AB/Saving Throws/HP/Attacks Per Round) if possible.
- Do Unarmed Feats (Imp Crit/Weapon Focus) integrate with the Stone Golem's fists?
- Will Weapon Item merges add to the Stone Golem's fist attacks, or damage based gloves take effect?
- Will Defensive Stance work in Stone Golem form and apply all benefits?

I also read recently that Damage Immunity - Decrease is always checked first before applying damage reduction (atleast that was my understanding of it), if I were to gear myself with an item that had Damage Immunity - Increase equal to the decrease, I could negate the damage immunity decrease so that normal damage passes through.

(From nwnwiki - "Fire 50% Damage Immunity - Increase" Combined with "Fire 50% Damage Immunity - Decrease" would be added together 50%-50% = 0% immunity to fire damage, resulting in normal fire damage being inflicted (100 fire damage would inflict 100 hit point loss). Damage immunity is applied before damage resistance and damage reduction.)

Would this be the only viable way to try and remove the Stone Golems piercing weakness, because currently any damage reduction one might have is moot against piercing damage?

I'm sure I will have more to say following some feedback. Thanks.

I don't see that working very well. You have to mix Wiz/Sorc/Bard in with Cleric and AA levels. I suppose Cleric 16/Bard 2/Arcane Archer 10 would work, but you are so feat-starved I don't see how it would truly be viable. AA 10 nets +5 arrows, which would help a lot, but your casting is going to be abysmal, and most of the pre-epic feats are devoted to the bow (WF: Longbow, Point Blank Shot, Zen Archery; then you have POwer Attack for Divine Might/Shield, leaving two free feats).

Drow e-peen revolves around being a kick arse caster as a cleric. You have been warned.

Thanks for that! Knowing the basics gives me a better idea of what to do. AA might not work out, as I think what I'd like to go for is something very skillsy. Pick pockets and UMD for pranking goodness. I was thinking definitely throw some rogue in, bard works too but if I'm not going AA, rogue is better. With UMD I'll be able to use all the shnazzy bard stuff anyway. Looks like I might need 14 int for skills and imp KD, melee dex might not be too bad a sell. Much as I like divine might/shield, I don't think I can make the cha investment with a need for good wis, high dex and decent int. Then again... bugger, if I start with rogue for skills, that means I have to deal with exp penalties forever. Argh. Just once I'd like a character with no level adjustment and no exp penalties... I might rethink going cleric, but not sure. I'll come back to it.

I've seen a fairly decent drow bard/cleric/AA build. I think it's the same as the elfy one Ulir posted, except only 1 AA instead of 3, due to ECL+2. I think, based on what I know and going by what Ulir said, going high AA isn't really worth it, better to go high cleric and rely on clerical means of raising AB etc (plus other things, like buffs/summons). I'm actually not entirely sure why go any AA at all. Is it just for the special arrows or something, or is the minimal AB/damage boost really worth it?

Go full Cleric, get nasty spells and buffs, pick up Point Blank Shot with a bracer and only get Zen Archery as a character feat. Gear the other feats towards spells. Rapid Shot is decent but requires a Dex commitment as well as Point Blank Shot. This all detracts from your spell feats. I don't need to mention that beating SR is paramount, especially as a Drow.

Since a major Cleric build revolves around being buffed well, you don't want to compromise this ability and make yourself dispellable. As well, Divine Power lasting for 6 minutes is better than the awkward balancing act of cramming AA levels in there. You get +5 weapons, anyway.

18 Wisdom, put every point in this. The rest is up to you, but 12 Str and 10 Dex are enough. Flavor as wanted.

AA is purely for the arrows.

Is that silly bracer still there? Thought those feat items were removed.

Only Knockdown from the Ring of the Ram was, I think.

It's risky having your build rely on feats from items, but if they are only a nice perk for the build, then no worries.

Yep, though in this case it seems like a backup idea. The item can be swapped out for when the bow is needed to shoot into melee combat, so yay!

Knockdown was nice to see go since a ton of people would skin the feat and get the ring, which made me a sad panda :/

And there's also a cloak with Rapid Shot in Winya last time i checked. Honestly, archer without this feat is a tit.
