Gamespy has removed NWN support one year ago, preventing server listing. But yesterday it went further by closing down completely, blocking display of the old server list for a long while before displaying an error "Connection failed, try another nick".
To get around this new problem, you have four solutions :
a) Either you select "Join LAN game" (instead of "Join Internet Game"), then you click "Direct Connect". If you play Amia only, it will be easy, since last ip entered is memorized.
b) Or you fix the problem permanently by modifying the "hosts" file. The file is located :
- On Linux : /etc/hosts
- On Windows : c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
This is a text file you can edit with Notepad. You'll need to add one line :
127.0.0.1 peerchat.gamespy.com
And then you can select "Join Internet Game" and get the "Try other nick" error message instantly. The error message is unavoidable but at least you get rid of the freeze and long wait of the game and you can still manage your history and favorite servers.
Note that this also works on Linux (unlike the similar fix that can be used to haste multiplayer login).
Under Windows, save the file as "hosts" (with the quotes) to prevent .txt to be added. This is not needed if you asked Windows not to hide extensions of known files.
c) Or you can create a shortcut (on desktop for example) to run nwn and direct connect :
Target of the shortcut :
C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Neverwinter Nights\nwmain.exe +connect 185.29.203.11:5121
C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Neverwinter Nights\nwmain.exe +connect 185.29.203.11:5121
Replace the blue part with the true path of your nwn. You can also copy an existing NWN shortcut and change the target with the red part.
d) First Go to this location.
C:/windows/system32/drivers/etc
then open hosts (or host on some systems) in notepad or an equivalent (yes the wine notepad in linux works) and add these on separate lines at the end & as shown.
0.0.0.0 nwmaster.bioware.com
0.0.0.0 nwn.master.gamespy.com
This will cause the timeout to be found & you wont have to wait before getting in.
