// For now, this is only realized by those with a Base Intelligence score of 16 or higher (that's before item bonuses or spell buffs).

*-*-*-*-*

Whether by passing glance or by the sudden realization - the kind brought on by your subconscious mind having worked on "what was wrong" since last you saw it - you become dimly aware that something is definitely amiss with the waters of Central Cordor.

Gradually you come to realize that the sea waves coming from the Bay of Cordor into the new Central bay area, are not coming straight inward as you might expect, but instead have a subtle "swirl" to them, churning in a counter-clockwise direction almost imperceptibly.

Indeed, as you consider the oddity of the phenomena, which most laymen would miss entirely, you're struck by the notion that the swirl is even in the wrong direction for this part of the world; the waters should be swirling in a clockwise direction, if anything.

What this could mean is unclear, and though the affect has gone relatively unnoticed thusfar, it's likely that word will soon spread.

A canidate for Governor of West Cordor dives into the water after several other adventurers to investigate. After some time he returns with them. He can be seen speaking with them for some time at length before he comes to a conclusion.

"We need Asya to implement the World Bridge. Lawson needs to hear about this."

Madrik Street is informed of this strange occurrence in a dark and dusty hall. A single stone of the floor is stared with sunken eyebrows; a face riddled with concern, as it tends to be.

Sgt. Lockeheart stumbled from Central Cordor and made her way on shaky legs to the lamp that stood in Eastern Cordor and via it to Kohlingen. Stumbling along, pausing to catch herself every now and then she picked her way along the road and then into the city heading for a certain tower, where she made her way up the stairs, even if she only made it to the top on all fours.

Once in The Seven Stars she consulted the library aids, she new her topic wouldn't be the easiest to find, but she had to search for any references to what it was she had experienced. Something here had to hold an answer for her....

Having been called and informed of the problem by some others, Asya turns up to central and spends several hours standing in the rain, just... Near the water. Any coming close or passing by may see that she stands silently, head bowed and eyes closed. Breathing very steadily, as if meditating, occasionally mumbling to herself something overly complicated.

Blue would make an effort to stay the hell away from the water, either clutching her head or whimpering below her breath in nervous ramblings whenever she came near enough.

"There's that weird swirl in the water, though," Andrew says to Sir Godric and Xaviera as they talk in East Cordor.
"Weird swirl?" Godric replies. "Phillipi mentioned something about that to me in passing, hrm..."
"Swirl? What? In the water?" Xaviera pipes up, looking at the other two in confusion, this being the first she's heard of it. Jud'Vardas glances to Andrew, raising a brow questioningly.
"I don't know nothing about it," Andrew says. "I don't see anything. Just what I heard, though."
"Like water going down a drain?" Jud asks. "That might be bad. If the bay's draining, guess where it's draining into most likely?"
"I wonder if it might be draining into the old pits under the city," Xaviera suggests. "Probably better they fill up and are forgotten rather than being used by anybody."
"Maybe," replies Jud. "Or into the underdark. Which has its own house of aquatic horrors."
Xaviera ponders this for a moment. "I remember, when Cordor was destroyed last time, there were a number of very deep tunnels down there, but I don't remember a lot of big caves such as the drow cities are in."
"Don't need big caves for big trouble," Jud says. "If you got an infestation of pyrimo in the bay, your fishing industry would be in deep trouble, for example."
The Speaker frowns. "Mmph. Thanks for the cheerful thoughts, Jud," she says, sourly, making a mental note to talk to the fishermen of Cordor South.
"Sam, could you check out the bay?" Andrew asks, turning to the Guardswoman at his side.

A figure would walk towards Central cordor from the direction of the western section of the city and watch intently out to the waters as he walked across, Noting the patterns.
The plated figure walks to the edge with his plated boots touched by the ripples of the water.

He draws out a Reed from a small bag and incants:

"Aquus, Respira."

Those who know the ways of the Arcane would tell that the reed was a component for Water breathing.

After a moment or two, The figure would descend into the depths without hesitation.

It doesn't take long for the rumor mill in Cordor to hear of this, and while most who look out at the waters and see no difference to their eyes dismiss it out of hand, chalking it up to "adventurer nonsense", there are others who recall the recent and pivotal role of said adventurers. Some of these few might even approach some of the less bizarre or frightening of those who attempt to investigate the depths and while not going out of their way to be neighborly, are at least cordial.

Of the phenomena, it neither seems to worsen or to lessen, to the eyes of those who notice such differences.

Meanwhile at the Central bay, an experiment went on. Gerald and Asya tied a rock to a rope and tied it off to a nearby lamp pole before tossing it into the bay. Then Gerald proceeded to toss a rock into the bay simply to see where it went. After a few hours he would come back to check on his test subject (the rock on the rope) before leaving it and returning the next day. He would check on it once per day each day thereafter to see if it has, after sinking the 200 meters that his rope would allow, changed at all.

The three "scientists" would find that it's very difficult to haul up their "test subject" when they attempt to do so, seeming to take longer to haul up the 200 meters of rope than it should. However when they reach the ropes end, they would find day after day, that the "test subject" remains apparently unchanged, tied at the end of the rope.

Of the "sacrificial subject" there is no sign.

Rumor of the strange nonsense surrounding the Central Bay begins to reach other major cities now, but by this time it is largely chalked up to complete nonsense. The phenomenon that some have observed seems not to have worsened in any way and so still undiscernible to most, is given little weight in conversation, especially with the worries of a thin winter after the war with Amn.

Sgt. Lockeheart stations herself in Central Cordor placing up a new sign that states:
Quote:
Central Cordor Bay - Off Limits!

By Order of The Cordor Guard and The Cordor Special Tasks Unit all access to Central Cordor's Bay is off limits to non-authorized personnel.

Those watching for such things would note no change in the water level within the Central Bay.

Soilbrood has taken to writing notes and letters and poems, putting them in sealed bottles, and tossing them out towards the disturbance. No apparent method to this. Just like tossing wishes into a well.

Under the waters of Central Cordor’s new bay someone has gone to work. On the floor of the bay stone walls are placed such that they surround the phenomena, an inner and outer ring with perpendicular supports. Though the process has been slow, day by day the stone stacked higher and higher making a relentless reach for the surface until finally the great square of stone walls crested just about the top of the water.

The stone walls seem to cordon off the phenomenon from the rest of the Central Bay, though whether it has any affect on actually containing it, remains to be seen.

After only a short hour since the completion of the bordering wall around the phenomenon, encompassing an area roughly forty meters squared within the Central Bay, the affect becomes readily apparent.

While the ever-so-subtly swirl affect of the bay waters outside the walls of stone gradually diminished, returning to the natural in and out of the tide that one might expect, the affect inside the stoney walls is quite the opposite. With the phenomenon now confined to a much smaller space, less water to be affected, the swirl affect had strengthened significantly, the waters within churning and frothing quite visibly even to the layman.

The overall Central Bay would appear to be safe to traverse once again, but any who might seek to slip past the Cordorian Guard and go for a swim within the stone-encased area would surely have to fight significant currents once inside, to avoid being pulled under or bashed against the stone walls.
