Bad luck seems to have befallen Amia lately. Kobolds. Demons. When will it stop?

Not soon.

It starts as simple bad luck. A bar patron's stool breaks sending him crashing to the floor. A cart wheel snaps stranding a driver out in the rain. Goblins, trolls, beetles and more seem to be getting more aggressive or showing up at inopportune moments. Several instances of rats getting into sealed food stores. People get sick from tainted food. A tree falls on top of some travellers, one who gets critically injured. A floorboard on a bridge breaks sending someone into the water. Multiple people get struck by lightning during what appeared to be a natural storm.

Then it gets worse.

Sightings of men in black clothing with white highlights seem to be walking the isle. More and more, these men seem to be present when things go wrong, most of the time disappearing before anyone can ask them questions.
Adventurers start to go missing. One man tells a sorrowful tale in Cordor of being ambushed by men wearing black who killed his two friends while he was able to somehow miraculously escape. When he returned with help, his friends' bodies were gone. He says he heard a whisper out on the frontier, a voice from someone he couldn't see. The distraught man repeats it many times.

"Lady Doom has cursed us."

Since the recent troubles in the forest, a certain elven ranger starts to keep a close watch and to investigate the Valley of the Arachnids. Though not in plain sight, since the men in black are not the only ones who can hide well. She makes many patrols through the Valley, as well as inside the caves, though she tries not to disturb the She'kats, trying to find anything out of the ordinary, and signs of the men in black being in there.

With investigation, the shady men that have been causing disturbances are revealed to be a Beshaban cult. Their symbol is turning up all over the isle on enchanted stones that show up in odd places. Some people have found themselves tripping over the stones on the road, certain they weren't there moments before. People are finding these stones sitting behind them, not having seen who placed it.

Their symbol, a thorn on top of two white circles...
Image

Their vicious pranks have hit a new level. Ordinary everyday objects are becoming cursed. A fork that slices someone's tongue off. A child's ball that explodes in fire. Armour enhanced amulets that severely reduce the user's will. A Lens of Detection that blinds. Fake Gills rings that only work for minutes.

The Salandran temple gets an influx of patients suffering injuries requiring regeneration as well as people cursed with various disabilities to their minds or bodies.

Then it gets worse.

Bad luck is becoming deadlier. Fatal traps being set in the road. Monsters armed with superior gear or enchanted with powerful magic. Blatant attacks by the cultists themselves. Anyone and everyone seems to be a potential target. The only sign they may come is the placement of one of their stones.

Cart drivers are getting scared. Several carts have reported broken, tainted, or otherwise ruined cargo. Some have been attacked and claim they barely escaped. Others talk of sinister whispers on the wind. Bar patrons are telling tales of what's happened to them or their friends. And the word is continuing to spread...

"The Maid of Misfortune has cursed Amia."

(Edit)
Many places seem to be effected by this. Cordor, Kampos, Guldorand, Wharftown. So far other places, including Kohlingen and Winya Ravana have been spared...

As the rumours intensify and dangers seems to be drawing near. A moon elf wizard takes upon herself to start scouting the near by regions with more frequency. During morning, around midday and at the evening hours a trio of three birds fly out from Winya Ravana. Each flying to a different direction, one for Nexus and She'kats, second towards Amia Forest and Green Lake and third taking upon direction of Nexus Hills and Uhm. They would scout for near full hour, before vanishing in brilliant flash of light. The type of bird would depend on the amount of light, hawk mostly during day light hours and at evening and night hours it would owls. The lady mage was intending to keep their town out of harms way, doing what she does best.. the Art of Divinations.

All possible findings, would be reported forward.

With carts getting so frequently targeted, extra guards are often getting hired for carts, though this comes at too high a cost for some merchants that can't afford the extra pay. With things continuing to get worse, one cart driver gets an odd idea. He copies the symbol off a rock he found and paints it on the side of his cart. A black thorn on top of two white circles.

After three successful trips outside the cities, the cart and driver find themselves undisturbed. Rumour quickly spreads, and before long, two other cart drivers try the same method to the same success. A few individual travellers try keeping Black Thorn rocks they've found on display; sticking out of a pack, hung from a pocket, tied to an arm. These people find themselves able to travel safely as well, though some find themselves criticized back in the cities for carrying them, complaints ranging from them giving in to the cult to being sympathizers or working with them.

Adventurers seem to be hit the hardest. Deadly traps being left on the roads in front of them. Potions turning out to be poison. Trinkets found on enemies turning out to be cursed. Ambushes set up especially for those raiding dungeons. It seems the cultists are narrowing down on their preferred targets. But... they still are going after regular folk...

And then it gets worse...

It seems Kohlingen is no longer spared from the cultist's touch...

In reaction to the findings of her spells. Written word carried by runners were sent. It seemed the elven enclave vigilance was indeed growing through activity of indviduals. Yet a word was also sent to High Captain and Council.

As per Recent Events
a certain winged aasimar speaks with those at the gate querying method of departure seeking to find out if he was cart assisted or what road he took... Either way he follows such a path and seeks out any folks usually along the way to ask if they had seen any one with the man's description.

Darby can be seen offering to escort the cart drivers who haven’t yet given in to the fear along with her Crew of Lucky Seadogs when they’re around. She also would offer the cart drivers who have the symbols on their carts a trade, a gem carved to look like a lucky charm; Sapphire dice, emerald four-leaf clovers, or ruby rabbit feet for their found symbol.

She can be seen around Amia wearing her usual Tymoran cloak proudly. She often has a shiny coin she rolls over her knuckles and she is more than happy to talk of Tymora to anyone who asks. More than that she can be seen playing on her iridescent seashell covered violin, mostly around the commoners who are starting to give into the fear caused by all the “bad luck”. The songs are inspirational and promote the values of Tymora.

Often she is heard to say something to the effect of, “Giving into the fear these fuckers are creating to make you believe in their “bad luck” is just what they want. Being bold and brave isn’t easy but in the end you’ll be better off for it. Where will this appeasing end? Once you give into the fear they’re sowing it’ll only grow. To stop this you need to fight, not like the adventurers do with their swords and spells but with your hearts.. with your courage. The same courage that gets you out of bed every day to face the toil and hardships so your families can eat and rest. Being brave isn’t the absence of fear, it’s facing it when you’re terrified but you do it anyways. Because you’re stronger than people give you credit for, you’re stronger than these fuckers who are trying to ruin your home think you are! Only you can prove them wrong, I can’t do it for you but I can help and I’ll stand with you if you’ll have me. My name’s Darby, champion of Tymora.”

For all appearances, she is sure of herself and her message. She also passes out delicious cookies to anyone who asks.

In Kohlingen the elven captain could be seen moving through the city on hearing the news and checking in on the injured people. She would then be seen speaking to the guard and making sure patrols were informed of the suspect, as to keep an eye out for a possible return, or future suspicious activity.

An alert goes out to Vendors across Amia. Someone has been selling discount potions to vendors that seem like genuine potions but are ending up poisoning the users. This comes to attention after an adventurer drank a healing potion he purchased in Cordor which made him pass out, getting him killed.

So far bogus potions have been identified being shipped to Cordor, Kampos, and Bendir Dale. People are warned to be cautious of potions sold at discounted prices, and an alert also goes out about a man with long brown hair wearing black and gold clothing who seems to have some part in the situation.

People hope the message got out in time before more tainted goods are sold.

Rather abruptly, cultist activity seems to come to a halt in Cordor. Rumour spreads that the Cordor Guard raided a house occupied by cultists and put an end to their operations in city. Even so, people seem to remain on edge, expecting them to come back at any moment.

Even in other places, cultist activity seems to drop. For now. For an entire day, no one has reported attacks on the roads, sightings of cultists, or discovery of more of their rune stones. This, coupled with Darby's encouragement, convince some people to stop displaying the cult's symbol to keep safe while they travel from city to city. Others are unconvinced, fearing that this lull in activity will only lead to something terrible. The are convinced that..

..it will only get worse.

In Cordor, news comes that cart drivers are still in danger from the cultists. Several speak of having had encounters with them on the road. The cultists for the moment seem less inclined to do damage, but the occasional cart does find a fire trap set in it's path.

The stress becomes so much for one old cart driver that he has a complete nervous breakdown, mumbling about being constantly followed. He's taken into care as he's stopped dealing with his daily needs, like eating, seeming to have lost all hope. He seems to be being given the very best of care at least, as it seemed the old man had come across a large sum of coin prior to his breakdown. In a briefly lucid moment, the man asks that the money be used to help others hurt by the cultists.

In the city of Cordor itself, cultist activity still seems at a standstill. No unusual accidents, no poisonings, no suspicious people aside from the usual adventurers. The guards pay extra attention to any suspect people though, intent on making sure the cultists don't come back to the city.

Meanwhile, at Kampo's..

During the evening, after the arrival of new supplies, a fresh keg of ale is opened to be served to customers. A small merchant group coming in is the first to partake, giving Kampo a nice tip. They sit down to drink their ale, talking amongst themselves of the ongoing issues of the isle. As the night goes on, more drinks are served. Just a usual night at Kampo's.

Cultist activity for most of the normal populace seems to remain low. Though surely there are others that have different stories to tell...

Perhaps things are getting better...

The raven haired half-elf keeps up her visits to Amia, often rolling her lucky coin over her knuckles as she chats with others. She can be seen occasionally pulling out her seashell covered violin and playing an upbeat, encouraging tune or song.

After the recent events, she seems just as confident as ever, especially when talking with the commoners. However, every now and then she'll flick a glance around herself watching the shadows with a thoughtful expression while fussing with her lucky coin.

She still offers to trade carved gems for any symbols people pick up, but only once, if they try it again they get a stern talking to about the dangers of willingly picking up charms left by ones looking to cause trouble. Though, even then she likely isn't adverse to handing over another carved gem charm of her own to them.

While she's understanding to why one might want to display the charms left by the cultists she does her best to try and get them to change their mind. If they refuse, she frowns but doesn't seem intent on forcing them to accept her point of view, just saddened and determined to keep trying her best.

After several decent days with a lull in the cult's activities (relatively speaking), things suddenly heat up. The cultists are finding ways back into Cordor again, sneaking or disguised. They are attacking carts again. They're poisoning drinks again. More fake potions are turning up. Their stones are showing up everywhere with no consistency. Sometimes something bad happens when one shows up, sometimes not. Safety on the roads starts to feel like a chance of luck for many people and once again people are caught wearing the cult's symbol on themselves to keep safe.

In one night of terror, an entire caravan goes missing, including five guards and the entire cart and driver headed for Guldorand.
Three people are poisoned in Cordor by their drinks, one of whom dies.
One adventurer comes back to Cordor bleeding badly, reporting that his three friends were slaughtered by unexpectedly strong trolls.
Rumours from Kampo's indicate that Kampo found a barrel of poisoned rum and was thankfully able to keep it from being served and is checking all his shipments carefully.
A cart is rumoured to have been attacked on the frontier and saved by the hins.
Traps are littering the roads. The remains of an exploded individual are found north of Cordor. One merchant hired a couple rogues in one instance to help with traps, and when out, one rogue turned on his boss and killed the other rogue before disappearing into the night, leaving a cult stone behind.

By morning, the death toll had hit 6, with 6 missing...

As per Recent Events...

Matthew continues his search in Cordor adding to his list the quiet observation of new faces in town.

He keeps notes and simply draws sketches with in a sketch book of any new faces he sees that happen to be mercantile in nature. He often travels out to West Cordor and resides with in the Light house as of late now. He takes the next morning to sit out front his own church and chapel with a box accepting donations to help out the poor and sick and folks who need help. He preaches openly and offers the same religious doctrine taught by his faith that the people of Cordor should always remain hopeful and strive for a better life and self betterment. He encourages individuals to take comfort in loved ones and to sew seeds for a brighter future as they band together in these 'troubling times'.

Matthew takes careful note of any donators or donation given to such and inspects the items thoroughly at the end of the day in private.

Gahnn takes some time out to visit Wiltun and Nes'ek, listening for rumors of similar treachery happening there as on the main isle. He attempts to question anyone willing to speak about the safety of travelers, found potions and equipment, and caravans, never saying 'Beshaba' out loud, but merely mentioning it as troublemakers.

There might be rumors of gems cut in the shapes of Lucky Charms being found in Wiltun as well, or even traded to any foolish enough to pick up one of the "cursed" stones by a certain Tymoran Admiral of Wiltun. This may or may not be related to some Lucky Charm gems found outside the Dale not too long ago.

On the cliffside, overseeing the rising of a new day, a Tymorian priestess stands diligent in prayer.

Did you think the terror had let up?

For the entire week, the Black Thorn cult has kept busy. Adventurers continue to go missing. Carts continue to get raided. Drinks continue to get poisoned. Carts continue to keep either a symbol of the Black Thorn painted on their cart or simply have one of their stones hanging somewhere on the cart. Any traveller adopting the practice finds safe passage easy.

Specific incidents include...
Two more shipments headed to Kampo's that were poisoned. Ever watchful, Kampo caught both cases before they reached the customers lips.
Several reported cases of cursed potions being found on monsters around the isle, prompting fears that any potions picked up are tainted, cursed, or otherwise poisoned.
A few people who have carried Black Thorn stones for safety have said they've seen cultists watching them on the paths, who have simply politely nodded to them and let them pass.
A couple adventurers have recounted tales of their entire group being slain except for themselves.

And still, the cult's stones keep showing up from Cordor, to Wharftown, to Bendir Dale, to Guldorand, to Tristram's path. How they're placed continues to be random. Sometimes trapped, sometimes not. Sometimes cultists waiting to ambush whoever comes by.

The isle remains on edge. Some people blame the cultists for everything from stubbed toes to weather to bad dice rolls. So far only Winya, the falls, the skyforest, and the inside of the grove remain entirely untouched.

Darby continues to make her presence known. Checking on her warning posters and passing the word along however she can. She continues to preach the benefits of turning to Lady Luck and the virtues of being bold and brave.

And those Lucky Charms in gem form are handed out to any willing to trade in any stones they've picked up. Any stones she comes across find themselves destroyed in out of the way places so the darkness doesn't bother others.

She wears her Tymora gear for all to see and walks the roads confidently when she does. She is often heard to say, "Tymora favors the bold and brave. These cultists are cowards and assholes. If you give into fear you're letting them win. We will beat them and they will regret ever having set foot on this isle."

Ever viligent, Ivana can be found stationed outside the Dale. She stands beside a sign, greeting travelers and asking how the roads are fairing. Her services are always offered; blessings, potions, and scrolls are extended to those bold enough to brave the cultists. Oddly, no payment or exchange of coin is necessary to receive such aid. If she is approached for more detailed plans of taking down the black cultists, she simply refers all to seek out the Champion of Tymora, Darby Mirth.

Murder at the docks!

News spreads that a man was assassinated while waiting for a ship for the mainland at the South Cordor docks. The victim was a local cart driver named Renton Bennald. The assassin must have picked the perfect moment to strike when no guards were looking. A dockhand went to check on him, believing he was just sitting and resting while the boat was prepped. As they touched his shoulder, he slumped forward having already been dead for minutes, his throat slit with one clean cut.

On his body were found an emerald clover and ruby rabbit's foot. The amount of 25,000 in coin was also discovered on his body, the money seized for the time being by the Cordor Guard until it's determined what to do with it.

With the aid of an undisclosed informant with no explanation as to how the information was obtained, a sketch has been released of the suspect in the killing. A human with short brown hair, blue eyes, short beard, grey/blue commoner's clothing, in his mid-thirties. Guards remain on alert looking for the individual but a witness says he left the city.

The killing, as many things happening on the isle, is attributed to the cultists.

A crew of adventurers led by the wonderful Hazard - went up the Skull Crags just to encounter misfortune after misfortune, culminating in a Pit Fiend coming against his party. Vowing to find the source, they fought all over the mountain range seeking their foes that lurked in the shadows, eventually making a mysterious new friend and getting word that there was some form of resistance fighting these agents of misfortune. Vowing revenge on the organization that tried to kill his friends (And him) Hazard reaffirmed his devotion to his Lady of Luck and seeks to continue standing in the way of misfortune, at any turn.

(Word goes out in the bars of Cordor of a bard singing songs of the lady luck and her wonderful whims. Hazard can be seen bringing good fortune to beggars and the sick in the streets with a herbal remedy here, or a coin there.)

Quiet but not forgotten.

Though there was less news for the past couple weeks about the cultists, they had certainly not left the isle. Travellers, adventurers, and carts continued to be harassed if not destroyed. Many still carry a symbol of the cult as protection against their threats. But many more didn't carry such, and held out hope that the cult would be taken care of. Many inspired by the work and care of Darby.

But... rumour began to spread that Darby had been kidnapped, and that the cult are to blame. "Tymora favors the bold and brave"? Many are more scared now than before when the one championing Lady Luck's cause is now in the hands of the cult.

More carts display the cult symbol, others hire mercenaries to protect their loads, others simply don't go out on the roads. The mood is tense and fearful, and people wonder what the cult will do next.

Cult stones continue to show up all over the place out among the lands from the frontier, to the forest, to the crags, to the valley, to the quagmire, to Tristram's path. Some find themselves left in odd places in buildings around Cordor, one finds itself on a chair in the Hin Inn, while another is found under a stool in Mayfields in Kohlingen.

The constant reminder of the cult's presence, frequent news of trouble on the roads, and still an occasional poisoning or freak accident keep many people on edge. In Cordor in particular, guards are on alert and check any report of potential cult activities that come up.

Most frustratingly, no one is catching them in the act, and reports of a spotting often go nowhere as they disappear as fast as they come. There must be some way to stop them?

Or will it be, that to be safe on the isle of Amia, the only solution will be to pray for mercy from the Maid of Misfortune?

An alert goes out over the City of Cordor late in the day. A cultist had supposedly been sighted in the south. Guard presence increases in the East and South for several hours as a search is attempted to find the cultist. At least two Law Knights come out to help patrol after it's reported one guard was killed. Though it's said one of the law knights fought a cultist, the search ultimately ends up being fruitless.

Then, Cordor sees a very weird activity going on. Someone is leaving bottles of Whiskey around the city, both south and east. Several are discovered, though few are drunk as the guards warn that such could be poisoned. Though, with some having drank the whiskey without problem, it seems more and more like someone is trying to pull some sort of prank.

A Chultan Ranger wearing unusually heavy armor goes to the afflicted settlements, namely Cordor, Wharftown, Bendir Dale, Guldorand, and Kohlingen. Speaking with what authorities he can, he offers large quantities of Compression Grenades of his own make to aid those patrolling the roads better identify traps before they are set off, with the hopes of them either being then avoided or disarmed. He also takes the time during the day to travel the roads, tossing the grenades and disarming any traps he might find.

While he freely gives the devices to the cities, he offers them to Cart Drivers for *cough* almost free. Just to help them keep their eyes open and spot any traps who get too close to their goods.

Isn't that a spiffy deal or what?

A familiar bardess makes rounds about a certain portion of the island after having put up some paintings in the main cities and settlements. With her, she carries a large pouch that jingles and looks a bit hefty looped around her belt. Moving from Bendir Dale, out toward the Amian Frontier and through Cordor first, she begins to pass out several little charms to citizens and individuals willing to take them. Promising that it would bring them luck if used boldly and bravely, these small tokens seem to be made of varying styles of cut gem. Sapphire dice, ruby rabbits feet, and emerald four-leaf clovers. Those who decline them would be met with respect and left to their devices henceforth.

The imp would later return to the Dale and make three more routes throughout the rest of the cycle. One from Benwick Hollow out toward the Nexus Hills looping back through the Amian Forest, another from the Skull Crag Foothills out toward the Sandy Beach Cliffs, and the last from Guldorand down through the Skull Crag Mountains along its journeyed trails.

Upon returning home to Wiltun, she would begin passing out even more to those she knew more intimately as neighbors and peers, wishing them the "luck of the Admiral".

The darkly clad lady of Wiltun accompanies the imp in her shadow, more often than not. She seemed more on alert for any hostile activity than an accompanying emissary to the redheaded bardess, watching the roads as they walked, and particularly on the lookout for the appearance of mysterious little stones, which were often met by an arrow or a quick stomp of her boot if spotted. She did not take much to talking while on duty, conversations were brief if she was approached, but it was apparent that the wandering dancer of shadows was focused. She was not easily distracted, and would never linger in one place too long before moving along, swiftly and silently.

When she returned to Fortress Wiltun by ship, she may seem more relaxed within its walls, talking to its residents more openly when approached, but otherwise she was usually often lost in deep though around the courtyard, lost in the depths of her own mind. The sequence continued, cycle after cycle.

A note is put up around Amia including Kampos, and other places outside of cities as ones inside usually get removed promptly.

And so, people of Amia, our time has come to a close.

For now.

Many of you have learned. And while you do not need to display our mark for your immediate safety any more, if this isle hasn't gained some respect for Lady Doom, we will return.

You cannot count on your adventurers to save you. We lured many of your strongest people into our dungeon and showed them what little strength they actually had. All but one of them falling, and only because we let that one live. We destroyed our base and collapsed it all around those failing adventurers, showing them, that from us, all they can do is run for their lives. We remain numerous, and watchful.

Amia will always be under Beshaba's gaze. So you had better pay her the proper respect. You can believe the lies of Darby about us if you wish, but this letter is proof of their failure.

Remain prepared for bad luck, as it will still come to you. And if you pay Lady Doom respect and prepare yourselves for the worst, you will be spared her worst. Do not make us demonstrate this to you again.

Remember. You couldn't even defeat us. You cannot hope to avoid our goddess.

Pray.

- Storner a.k.a. "Bob", of the Black Thorns

----------------------------------

As the note goes up, it seems to mark the end of cultist activities on the isle. Drinks are no longer being poisoned by cultists. Potions don't seem to be cursed. Carts are no longer being ambushed.. by cultists at least. Adventurers still disappear but not so frequently. Cultist sightings are virtually nil. No superiorly equiped orcs or magically empowered monsters seem to be attacking people around the crags anymore.

There is only one sign of them after the letter. And a disturbing one at that. Cult stones, charged with a spell of darkness, show up on mass all over the place.
- One is found in Kohlingen's fountain by their dock gates.
- Several are found around Wharftown.
- A couple find themselves at the base of the falls outside Winya.
- Several are found around Cordor, including at the inn, at the Market, at the arena, by portals, and at the docks.
- Several appear just outside Bendir Dale in all directions.
- Some appear outside of Guldorand.
- Dozens are dropped around the crags.
- More dozens are dropped all around paths on the island.
- And a few appear around the docks and outside the walls of Wiltun. A final last taunt.
This all occurs in one day, at least a hundred or more stones found. It's doubtful one person could have accomplished this in such a short time. They seem to want to prove their numbers and reach.

And then, it all stops. Nothing. No more stones found.

Many people on Amia remain nervous and paranoid afterwards. People are still cautious of their drinks. Several carts and merchants keep hiring mercenaries to protect them. And in privacy and shame, some thank Beshaba each day for sparing their lives, terrified about the cult returning.

The only group uneffected by all this seems to be the adventurers. Few seem to pay Beshaba respect... at least that can be seen on the surface. Adventurers remain a stubborn group collectively, daring to go to dangerous place and putting themselves at risk for thrills, power, pride, or money.

Any many people watch carefully for signs. Signs of the cult. Signs of bad luck. Signs they need to protect themselves. Some feel comfortable again in mere days. Some in weeks. Some in months. And several scarred individuals, having lost friends or family or having come face to face with the cultists, can never seem to let it go. A trauma forever sticking with them.

In the end, more pray to their own gods for protection than to Beshaba for safety. The cultists didn't spread the faith far and wide across the isle. But did they really expect more? It was a cult afterall. In the end, perhaps Beshaba was just an excuse for their own violence.

Everyone takes their own meaning from the months spent under their threat.

May it never return.
