I am trying to figure how can a druid summon more than 1 Nature's ally at the same time. I've been reading through some guides for druids (since im the party druidzila) and I've seen things like "summon d3 of crocodiles" but I cannot find the source where it says that I can summon more than one nature's ally at the same time. |

The limitation to one summoned creature at any given time is purely a NWN invention, imposed to keep people from crashing their games by making their computers have to think about too much stuff all at once. In PnP, you can have as many simultaneous summons as you have spells to summon them. If that makes your brain crash, it's your own silly fault. |

But this is Pathfinder. We are playing 3.5 D&D. And when I asked the DM he and the other players said that if I summon another creature while the existing one is still there, the first one unsummons. On the other hand I'm finding some texts where people are suggesting that a druid should summon d3 crocodiles. I'm confused. |

I linked Pathfinder to explain the d3 part. If you read the spell descriptions I linked, you will see how that works. It was the same way in 3.5. As for the only having one summon at a time, yeah, our table always played that way. |

OK, so here it is. When you summon anything, you're using one spell, so just like casting invisibility when you're already invisible you don't become twice as invisible, only the most recent casting takes effect. However all summoning spells have a limit to the hit dice of creatures summoned, which allows one creature of that level or several creatures of a lesser level to be summoned. If you summon a creature or group of creatures with one spell, and then cast another summon spell, only the most recent effect is applied, replacing any previous summons. If you like, think of it as the control needed for those summons to do your casters will, casting another summon spell breaks that control and the previous summons scatter or return to their place of origin. Pathfinder, it is fully compatible with D&D3.5 and a common excellent resource should you decide to investigate further. In any case, personally, I find the question moot as the DM already ruled on the issue and seemed to have explained it well enough anyway. |

Obviously, your DM can make any ruling he or she wants, or override anything that suits the campaign to be overridden. But they should at least understand what they're ruling, and why they're ruling it. If your DM is telling you that it's a 3.5 Ed rule that you can only have one summoned creature at a time, then he/she is mistaken about the rules in the books. (Which is a different consideration than the rules in his/her game; about that, he or she can't ever be mistaken.) The invisibility analogy is flawed: casting multiple summons isn't equivalent to casting multiple invisibility spells on the same person, it's equivalent to casting multiple invisibility spells on multiple people. Which is clearly and intuitively ok. Nobody would object to a caster having two Walls of Fire running at the same time, or casting a second Web while the first one was still in place. There's no explicit rule saying a summoner's magic is bound by stricter rules than any other sort of caster. (There's a rule limiting the number of Hit Dice worth of undead creatures a cleric can simultaneously control via the evil version of Turn Undead; maybe that's what your DM is thinking of? But there's no equivalent written rule for summons.) |

No, he said that according to the rules of D&D it unsummons the previous one. He does not ban any stuff actually. He allows everything that exists in 3.5 ed. How do you think I got a fleshraker animal companion at lvl 4? Anyway thanks everyone! |
