Can someone point out where the familiar must be of a compatible alignment? The sources I find only indicate the creature must not be hostile or unfriendly. Hell, they say they can be caged so they don't wander off. Given that pseudodragons don't have a perpetual Detect Evil running, I fail to see why it's completely implausible for a vastly intelligent mage to fool the critter long enough to do the binding. Seems to me that binding a good aligned critter is exactly the dickish thing an evil mage would do for the lulz. For flavor, their IG description even states that they are "arrogant and demanding creatures, often found in the company of arrogant and demanding wizards". Am I missing a document somewhere that expands on the requirements for a familiar?

Quote:
Improved Familiar [General]
This feat allows spellcasters to acquire a new familiar from a nonstandard list, but only when they could normally acquire a new familiar.

Prerequisites
Ability to acquire a new familiar, compatible alignment, sufficiently high level (see below).

Benefit
When choosing a familiar, the creatures listed below are also available to the spellcaster. The spellcaster may choose a familiar with an alignment up to one step away on each of the alignment axes (lawful through chaotic, good through evil).

Improved familiars otherwise use the rules for regular familiars, with two exceptions: If the creature’s type is something other than animal, its type does not change; and improved familiars do not gain the ability to speak with other creatures of their kind (although many of them already have the ability to communicate).

The list in Table: Improved Familiar by Alignment presents only a few possible improved familiars. Almost any creature of the same general size and power as those on the list makes a suitable familiar. Nor is the master’s alignment the only possible categorization. For instance, improved familiars could be assigned by the master’s creature type or subtype, as shown in Table: Improved Familiar by Type/Subtype.

From D20SRD.org, under Feats

The above is where it lists familiars that aren't just animals to start (IE: likely higher than animal intelligence), which is the prerequisite for standard familiars out of the PHB. The improved familiar feat is from the DMG, if I recall correctly.

From a more lore-worthy standpoint, Familiars are gained traditionally through the use of a specialized ritual that calls out for a kindred spirit to come of its own accord. 3.5 glossed over it but back in 1st and 2nd edition, you had to sit around for an hour and meditate, and when you "woke up" the familiar would be present and bonded to you, implying that while it may not have detect evil, it wouldn't respond to the call of a creature with an incompatible alignment.
