...what. You're crazy. Greater Ruin is more useful in PvM than it is PvP.

But the point is that you don't actually need it to beat the bosses. I rate the automatic over hundred damage on a single target far more useful in PvP because of that. If there's a boss you can't beat without it, you're better off not soloing the bugger.

It's pretty handy on a few bosses where it can clock in at multiple hundreds.

I didn't say you needed it to beat bosses. You said everybody takes it for PvP, and I corrected you. :P

That doesn't even make sense! You don't need it to win PvP either. It doesn't change the fact it's more useful in PvM.

Hokay. I need some help with a pure rogue build I've been poking at for a few days. So far I have:

Base Stats:

STR: 10
DEX: 20
CON: 8
WIS: 8
INT: 14
CHA: 12

End Stats:

STR: 10
DEX: 28
CON: 8
WIS: 8
INT: 14
CHA: 12

Feats:
(All DEX +1)
Level 1: TWF
Level 2:
Level 3: Finesse
Level 4:
Level 5:
Level 6: Dodge
Level 7:
Level 8:
Level 9: Ambidexterity
Level 10: Imp. Evasion
Level 11:
Level 12: Imp. TWF
Level 13: Defensive Roll
Level 14:
Level 15: Mobility
Level 16: Crippling Strike
Level 17:
Level 18: WF: Rapier
Level 19: Slippery Mind
Level 20:
Level 21: EWF: Rapier
Level 22:
Level 23:
Level 24: Gr. Dex 1, Imp. Sneak Att. 1
Level 25:
Level 26:
Level 27: IC: Rapier
Level 28: Epic Dodge
Level 29:
Level 30: Toughness/Epic Prowess/Armor Skin/Imp. Sneak Att. 2

I'm completely undecided on what to take at 30. It has decent AB, as well as AC. I don't want to muticlass with this build. Any suggestions on anything to replace/get?

Do you intend to dual-wield rapiers? I'd recomend a light weapon so you dont get the -4 penalty for using a medium weapon in your off hand. And what race, may I ask?

As for the feats, looks a bit messy. WF for example should be taken as early as possible, likewise with the dualwielding feats. defensive roll is the least useful of all the feats required for epic dodge and can be taken later, so I would rather take crippling strike as the level 10 rogue bonus feat. Mobility is useless as well, togheter with slippery mind. And don't take pre-epic feats post-epic, Improved Critical being one. And you want Blindfight.

Yes, dual rapiers was the intended idea. As for the race, just a regular moon elf.

Are you saying take the two-hand feats first, or the weapon focus?

What I'm saying is that while dualwielding rapiers sound like a nice idea on paper, it is really a horrible one in game. As a 3/4 BAB class you suffer in the AB departement from the beginning, increasing the dualwield penalty from -2 to -4 only makes matters worse. As a moon elf you can use longbows, of which there are many good ones, and you will still be a mean sneaker.

If you absolutely want to dualwield, shortswords are one of the better options, especially for a rogue. But even then you are quite feat starved as an elf, since you need 3 feats to be effective; TWF, Ambidex and Weapon Finesse. And ofcourse you will want Weapon Focus because of your low AB.

In sum, going pure rogue on a feat heavy build (which dualwielding is) is painful.

Dualwielding isn't the only option I'd thought of. I was more or less testing it out to see what other people had to suggest about what I'd come up with. I'll try one with the longbow, like you said, and see if I can come with something a bit less feat-dependent.

I agree with QPR, unless you can afford to, dual wielding medium weapons on a rogue just sounds very painful. That's 9 AB less than a single-wielding Full BAB class, if you want to see how painful that sounds.

Without Hide in Plain Sight, there are a lot of occasions where you -should- be dealing sneak attack damage, but you aren't, due to NWN mechanics being shitty. I'd personally recommend Improved Knockdown in place of Dual Wielding feats and continue to use Rapier and a Shield. Otherwise, I hope you'll be partying with people for everything you do!

Dual-wielding rapiers is a bad idea, but it's doable if you really like the flavor. I would recommend short swords, though. They probably look better in the offhand, too.

You have no need for either Dodge or Mobility. Mobility is completely useless with Tumble, since you'll be immune to AoOs anyway. Dodge isn't a prerequisite of Epic Dodge, that's false info in game.

Dropping the two means you get Improved Critical and Blind Fight pre-epic.

Why early Great Dexterity? You need 25 for Epic Dodge, take it when you have nothing better to pick. I would start with 19 Dex and just finish at 26, though. Gives you 10 Con or 12 Str and one more point into either to make buffing easier.

Improved Sneak Attack is fun, but it's not the best pick. If you go that route, dual-wielding is nice. One point is pretty lame though, so I'd rather go Armor Skin and maybe Epic Skill Focus if you want to be good at something.

I wouldn't focus on fighting as a pureclass rogue. It's a utility class, I'd go for flexibility and skill investment. If you want to fight, you could do something like my Rogue/Ftr/WM multiclass on the previous page, or Rogue/Ranger or something. But it's your call. You can still deal obscene damage when you get a chance to flank your enemy, even without dual-wield focus. One level of ranger would solve all your feat problems, but by all means stick with pureclass if you have it in you.

If you're dead set on a rapier, you could consider picking up a small shield/shield prof as well.

Please don't go 8 CON on a pure rogue. You're getting 5 HP per level, for a grand total of 150 at max level. It will be an utter pain to level.

Quote:
Base Stats:

STR: 10
DEX: 20
CON: 10
WIS: 8
INT: 14
CHA: 10

End Stats:

STR: 10
DEX: 28
CON: 10
WIS: 8
INT: 14
CHA: 10

Feats:
(All DEX +1)
Level 1: Blind-Fight
Level 2:
Level 3: Weapon Finesse
Level 4:
Level 5:
Level 6: Shield Proficiency
Level 7:
Level 8:
Level 9: Weapon Focus: Rapier
Level 10: Imp. Evasion
Level 11:
Level 12: Improved Critical: Rapier
Level 13: Defensive Roll
Level 14:
Level 15: Knockdown
Level 16: Crippling Strike
Level 17:
Level 18: Improved Knockdown
Level 19: Slippery Mind
Level 20:
Level 21: EWF: Rapier
Level 22:
Level 23:
Level 24: Gr. Dex 1, Epic Skill Focus: Spot
Level 25:
Level 26:
Level 27: Armor Skin
Level 28: Epic Dodge
Level 29:
Level 30: Epic Prowess

This is far better balanced and the best you'll get out of such a build. Don't don't don't try focusing on a ranged weapon with a build like this. You will always get focused in PvM due to monster AI and never get off any sneaks.

The whole build idea isn't about being able to beat the living piss out of everything that crosses the path of the character. It's about sticking to the roots of the only thing the character knows, the only thing they've grown up with/on.

I don't mean to be condescending, but I find it a bit saddening that anytime anyone posts in this thread, they want the best build anyone can offer. I don't just play the game to end up plowing through every monster to grind to 30, effectively ending the character (and subsequently any RP with it, mostly because it become boring to play a level 30), I like to plan the build before I play it based the story I choose to give the character. I like to have fun expanding on the story behind them, having them experience failures every now and then. Yes, the builds I come up with aren't the best. And I'm okay with that. But I don't like having every build I try fall flat on it's face. Hence why I ask for help. I'm sorry that I'm different than most people.

If you're going to argue about this with me, please do it over PM's, let's not spam the topic.

I'm not quite "dead set" on anything right at the moment, save for the backstory of the character. The weapon they use is flexible, so I'm taking suggestions on what they might use.

You're coming off as entirely too defensive. We haven't used up our time posting to tell you that you're a terrible person and your build is terrible, we posted because you asked for ideas and critique and we've given you that. If you're going to get offended when we try to help then why ask for it in the first place? I certainly don't get anything out of giving you an easier build to level with.

Actually, a ranged weapon focused one works pretty well in PvM, though you need to be crafty with positioning, hiding, and get-away tactics if you don't want to pull out a melee weapon+shield whenever hostiles close. Mine worked with a light crossbow, I think a shortbow, longbow, or sling are better mechanically though. (Sling you get the shield too, and +1 AB on a halfling). They are however, weak against non-sneak-attack immune targets, damage plummets a -lot-.

I will say that an 8 CON is a bad idea though unless you really want the novelty value of playing a sickly character. I'd try to shoot for 12.

That's alright, figured it was something like that. (Most) people here always consider the roleplay of the build the most important aspect, so if there's something you really wanted to portray with a 8 CON or as a pure rogue, then go for it and more power to you. I'm just giving advice in general, your call whether or not to use it.

OK, I'll correct myself. If you want to be mostly running around in circles, then feel free to focus on a ranged weapon. :P

Teasing aside, with the way our monsters decide on targets, archers invariably end up being focused upon. As an AA, this isn't so bad, because you have the durability and damage even when in point-blank, but you don't have this luxury on a pure rogue. Personally, I'd focus on melee and just carry around a ranged weapon. Focuses or not, you're still doing 15d6 sneak attack damage so you get all the perks of powerful melee and a pretty lethal ranged game whenever you see the need for it.

My ranged rogue has not had to do the Circular Waltz of Panic to this date, and he is now level 15. Granted, he is dependent on a party to get anything done, but when he has one, he is raining down sneak attacks like I have never seen before. Sometimes the mechanics get a bit bugged and you don't get a sneak attack, but changing target, moving position usualy solves the problem. And the AI does not give a shit about him. Same with my ranger I have noticed; when he flanks in melee, the AI often goes for him, but when he stays ranged, they pretty much ignore him.

Looking for some kind of monk/paladin build. Either 20+ monk or heavy on the paladin.
Aasimar as the starting race, possibly just human.

Maybe set on going 29paladin focused in something or 29 monk.
Ideas n tips?

Im Trying to wrap my mind around a 'Justicar' type of character.

Are you thinking of armor, weapons, fists, robes?

It could be pretty damn cool, if not very effective, to play an unarmored paladin with a greatsword getting a bit of AC from buffed Dex and Wis, but focusing on Strength. 6 Monk levels gives you IKD, 9 nets you Improved Evasion and 10 is another +1 AC (and potential +1 from Wis, but you won't have that much).

I would focus on Paladin, in any case. What monk gives you is some leeway with looking good and not wearing armor, like a proper penitent. You will be starved for stats, so I do not recommend you build a Divine Might/Shield Charisma thing.

14 Dex, 14 Wis is enough to get away with not wearing plate and shield. Dropping just one level into Monk is cheesy and doesn't give you the best benefits of the class (like the Wis AC).

23p/6m gives you one paladin bonus feat. Then if you're human, you can get one more level in paladin, I guess. Alternately, 20/9 would give you Improved Evasion and max paladin spells.

I don't know what you'd do with 20 monk, unless you intend to use fists or kamas. That looks pretty stupid, especially for a paladin, IMO. You have rigorous discipline and oneness of body and mind, but you're not a friggin' ninja.

I did the 24/6 Cleric/Monk with Joon. Even after the Monk AC nerf, he's still more than viable, and he's wielding a quarterstaff of all things (looks very good btw). Just takes ages to buff up, which is boring. Paladins get more BAB but don't quite get the self-sufficent buff selection of a cleric. I don't see why it couldn't work though.

Paladin20/Monk6/Fighter4 is fairly purty. Paladin20/Monk10 if you intend to fist. You'd love UMD to make your life easier, but alas, you'll just have to depend on others to provide you with Owl's Insight et al.

Absolutely this if you will take a third class. It'll net you EWS. You would go two-hander, something like heavy flail (there's a maul model these days, right?) would look badass. Imagine a holy man running around with a maul his own size, wearing nothing but pants. I'd play it.

I did 28 paladin/1 cleric/1 monk on my Monkeygripper. Monk/cleric is almost like having UMD. You don't get the weapon spec stuff, but you do get te 100% successful prayer and the special domain bonuses for it. you can also hold cleric bonus spell slot items to cast higher level cleric spells. At... uh... caster level 1, but who's counting, right? Raise Dead doesn't ask for a caster level!

Explain how you mean? Caster what?
And would't 23Paladin/6monk/1Cleric work?

...what

it means exactly what it says, Svensk. You only have one level of cleric so cleric spells have caster level one.

Of course the 23/6/1 works but I wanted heavy paladin and took monk mostly for evasion, tumble, fre cleave and the 'kosher UMD', just like the cleric level. 20/6/4 and 24/4/2 (Pal/Fgh/Rge[Mnk]) are beter, yeah, but the 28/1/1 was perfectly enjoyable. I prefer to give anecdotal buulds rather than cookie cutters, in the topics.

Plus as a Paladin, KD was worthless to me: I couldn't rationalize a Paladin smashing someone to the floor then beating on them when they can't fight back.

Hello folks,

A bunch of random questions that are bugging me a lot.

1. First of all, someone that is 100% sure about this please tell me: is Terrifying Rage aura a Paralysis or Fear effect on Amia?

2. Critical hit Knockdows/Called Shots/Disarms - how does that work? I heard that the DC is rapidly raising but i've found no confirmation on this on NWN wiki.

3. Uhm... what else... Oh yeah, well i was tinkering with a certain drow Bard build recently - it has 20 BAB, 40 AB. Now i'm really torn, because i have 3 epic feats and so many choices... Taking Epic Weapon Focus: Scimitar, now:
- Called Shot
- Improved Critical
- Epic Prowess
- Epic Skill Focus: Taunt/Discipline
- Toughness
If you'd have to pick, which two of these you'd go for and why?

Thanks.

You have Lasting Inspiration, right? I would take Armor Skin to be honest. Certainly not Called Shot, it's mostly for flavor and maybe kiting with a ranged weapon. No need for ESF since you're already getting an easy buff to all skills from Bard Song. Go Discipline if you do, though. You can taunt anyone anyway, nobody stacks Concentration. That's probably one strange build you have, though. :D

Oh, and: Fear effect. Crits have no effect on the DCs.

That's silly. You can't fight evil fair and square - Your god would't be very pleased if you died defending a village just because you wanted to 'Fight fair' and let the enemy backstab you, Then rape and burn the entire village.

Well, the paladin would beg to differ. Ideas of chivalry will vary from race to race, culture to culture, church to church and person to person, but the typical paladin attitude probably would be not to resort to such methods. It's not defined anywhere, and it's not completely unreasonable to consider knockdown an honorable move in fair battle where both parties understand what to expect. Still, most paladins will impose upon themselves awkward restrictions out of chivalry. You need to think about it long and hard, anyway.

There's only 10 bard in that build, pretty much all i need, having Brew Potion. AC is also not an issue.
It is strange, yes :P It's also very lovely, and that's why i'm seriously considering Called Shot to make it even more lovely.

The idea here is to make combat more interesting, that's what those combat feats are for after all, but also:
- CS:Legs is -2 dex which translates to -1 AC for enemies [or +1 AB for me].
- CS:Arms is -2 AB, which translates to +2 AC for me.
Both are cumulative, for 4 rounds. I'm thinking, if i score even a few of those vs something with high discipline, it'll be AC/AB advantage for me. The only thing i'm concerned about is the 40 AB i have, which is used in Discipline checks. I have never really used combat feats before except Knockdown from the ring, and generally it didn't work like a charm, so my concern is if the CS is worth it in pve and pvp, or is my AB too low and Epic Prowess would be a better idea.

Oh well, can't help you there much. But I wouldn't count on Called Shot's effectiveness, as you first have to hit them at -4 (and beat the Discipline check) in order to lower their AC, which is kinda counter-productive. It's not bad, but it's not worth an epic feat. Definetely go for Epic Prowess if AC really isn't an issue (though it never hurts to have more).

By the way: is it a secret what the Mummy Dust summons for Magical Beast and Outsider are? I seem to have picked Epic Conjuration for Joon, apparently planning for EDK. Now that Mummy Dust has more options, though, it might be more fitting. He's LN and I was hoping for a Sphinx or something associated with knowledge somehow. Do I just take a chance?

Congrats, you described NG or CG, or even maybe an LG non Paladin.

But not a Paladin.

So you'd fall a paladin for using knockdown?

Pretty much my point. Anyway. It's a question for another thread.
