Here's a quick and easy to use guide on how to change text colors while in NWN. Its all on NWNwiki, but might as well put it here as well. It makes telling the difference between text channels really really easy.

First you gotta pull on nwnplayer.ini and edit in the following lines under [Game Options]
[Chat Colors]
TalkColor=240,240,240
ShoutColor=255,239,80
WhisperColor=128,128,128
TellColor=32,255,32
ServerColor=176,176,176
PartyColor=255,102,1
DMColor=16,223,255

Remember how I said first? I lied, thats all you gotta do. You can look at this website for a large number of colors and their codes. And obviously, they are listed as R,G,B

I've had this done for a long time, and it's awesome, and everyone should do it. I can't imagine going back to having /party chat the same color as regular chat, or to /whispers being that unreadable dark gray.

exactly! I got my new computer and couldnt find it on searching, plus someone asked me how its dont so I figured might as well post it here for all to see.

not a clue, they might be, they might not. Those are just the numbers on the nwnwiki

Ugh. I don't want to change them all. Only one or two. I'll do some poking.

then im pretty sure you only have to enter the lines you want to change. As a default, the color lines arent in NWNplayer.ini

If that doesn't work, then just delete the color change section you added and its back to normal.

Odd, though.
I put in 128,0,255 (which should be roughly light purple) for /w and got an orange color. Unpossible! Red and Blue do not make orange D:

Is the color system a bit limited/funky?

How to save the changed .ini file? Both notepad and wordpad simply deny to do so.

NWN is not running right?

If it's in Program Files and you're running Vista or you have a limited account on XP, you can run into that issue.

Maybe I'm just naive, but how could changing the color of your chat text even be an abusable thing?

I think he is mistaking this for changing the text for everyone with text color tags.

There are other ways it could be "abused" but it's really not anything to be worried about.

notepad should in theory only deny you to save it if its using the file, so...close nwn first, -then- edit the colours. is what I think you may be doing wrong?

if its permissions, heck don't get me started.

Bumping this because it's super helpful and I just PMed a few people with a link to it since it came up in party chat. Could we get this compiled into some useful tips for people as well? Or just sticky this, perhaps?

Your colour guide is broken! Though I just googled for a scale and this one worked pretty well for me.
