Hi all, I'm a (relatively) new player here. I did a quick search but couldn't find the info I was looking for. I just started a character who will have many levels of RDD, having white dragon blood running (in some part) through her veins.

My question is this... At what level is it appropriate to contact a DM regarding the breath-weapon/wings for a damage-type/color that is dragon-color specific? The breath weapon is gained at 3 levels of RDD, while the wings aren't achieved until 9 levels. Do I contact a DM at level 3 RDD, or wait until level 9?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Any time soon as you get the class is fine, and should work/stick!

Oh wow... talk about a sad day. Gone are the hours of researching dragons (for the first time... was interesting to read about after playing dnd games for years) and backstory development for this character. :?

I read each of the links on the left-hand column of the website (for new players) regarding class/spell changes, and assumed when designing my character that the information I found would be fairly comprehensive as far as changes & custom content is concerned. After solo grinding for hours (because let's face it, White Dragon Disciples, no matter how recently they've awakened their blood, simply do not go around looking for company) to reach level 8 (5 bard, 3 RDD) and get my much anticipated Breath Weapon... you can maybe imagine my disappointment to find a cooldown for the ability that was not advertised anywhere in plain sight.

Request:

Could someone please add a line on the "Classes and Feats" page indicating there is an internal cooldown "based on your constitution modifier" (which gives no details, mind you) so no future players decide to try to create a character whose primary weapon will be his/her Breath Weapon.

Thank you for your consideration.

R.I.P. Vetr Icebreath.

You can't really expect a scaling breath weapon that can do up to 20d10 to be spammable. It'd be horribly broken otherwise, shame you're going to abandon your character just because you cannot abuse such a mechanic.

Really? You're going to stop playing a character with such a fantastic, promising, rich RP class as Dragon Disciple because there's a cooldown on the breath weapon? O.o

This is an RP server. That should be the driving force behind what you choose for your character - not the mechanical benefits. I have a character with 20 levels of Dragon Disciple and I have thoroughly enjoyed the hell out of roleplaying the class for several RL years. Maybe you should give it a chance?

That said, I would advocate it being put on the Dragon Disciple section of the Classes and Feats modifications.

First.

If someone offers you an all-you-can-eat buffet, would you call it "abusing the mechanic" if you go back for seconds, thirds, fourths? Kindly refrain from saying I was attempting to "abuse" a mechanic.

It clearly states the breath weapon can be used unlimited times per day. Is it reasonable to think that a cone spell with a reflex save for half (re: no damage with imp evasion) that can only be used at MAXIMUM once per round, be something that could be used each round, on a server where knockdown exists along with mulitple other disabling effects? Yes, I think it's quite reasonable... especially since I have absolutely NO knowledge of this server other than what I'm able to read.

Again, I'd only love for this to be posted so future new players don't make a similar mistake. And yes, when you design a character to be constitution based with little or no other offensive means, simply to fight PvE on a server (because it would NOT be viable in PvP even if you could spam it till the cows came home with NO cooldown), it is rather disheartening and yes I will likely abandon her because of this. I'd rather not have to deal with what is already a ridiculous grind against low level monsters having no offensive output, get even worse when she advances in levels but her offensive output does not scale with her due to my choice to make her CON based and use the breath weapon.

Not a huge deal... just a big waste of time to find out about the cooldown. But, now I know.

PS - I have enjoyed reading about Dragons and playing this character... my excitement was unbridled up to this point. I was so looking forward to level 8 that I've not slept all that much the past three days.

I will probably just go a different route, since I do enjoy the roleplay possibilities for the class... just can't be bothered to be a cheerleader in any fight (pve or pvp) scenario since I won't have any real damage potential. I just don't like to feel useless in a group, and a lot of the fun in nwn for me is RP revolving around dungeons, adventure, etc... ie: PnP campaigns. Doesn't mean I don't enjoy playing my particular role.

I will point out that in any source material, I'm pretty sure it lists that a dragon's breath weapon uses CON to determine how often it can do so.

That said, it should be added to the sidebar, and will be.

:( I just didn't know where to look, or even to look at all. It's 100% my mistake.

Is there anywhere that the cooldown formula is listed? My planned DD would have a fairly high CON modifier, so maybe the CD wouldn't be super long. The only thing I could find regarding the CD was in the draconomicon where it says
"After using its breath weapon, a dragon must wait at least
a few seconds before it can use it again. Under normal circumstances
the delay is 1d4 rounds, but the Recover Breath
feat shortens that time, while the application of metabreath
feats extends it."

I don't have a lot of DnD resource books unfortunately. Sorry if the above sounded like whining or complaining, the point was just to see if the information regarding the CD could be made more clear for future newbies, in case they're as stupid as I. Thanks for all of the assistance.

Looking forward to playing a dragon disciple in some form or another, eventually. ;)

To be fair, I've asked for clarification on how long the cooldown is, too. It doesn't specify anywhere. It can be a nuisance when it fires off the visual even before the cooldown is over. <.<

Design a character simply to RP on a server, not to PvE or PvP. It's a fun concept I promise.

This has been answered and tended to, no need to keep poking it.
