RP is RP.
A DM was not on at the time to over see the events.. might be time to MSN.
I'm gone from this thread all the whining is giving me a headache. Feel free to take it to PMs.

Check wizard's website and illustrations/captions/descriptions of characters in the core books from AD&D to 4.0. Note how as each character progresses, their gear increases in appearance. More shiney additions added at each level, presenting a fairly straight forwards way of telling approximate level of the individual. One of my buddies that Dms thru RPGA clued me in to that. But that is neither here nor there as Nwn can't reflect such.

Since some people seem bound and determined to bring that most dreaded word or all fantasy discussions, "Reality", into this... well, here's a situation from the other weekend.
I was at work behind the bar. It was me and a girl bartender... so, one guy, one girl behind the bar. The servers are all female and the manager on duty was female, too. The kitchen had closed and the kitchen staff had left. Basically, I was the only male employee in the entire establishment. A guy comes in and proceeds to be rather loud and obnoxious to the female bartender. Making rude comments and basically being an ass. I look at my coworker and she looks at me and gives me the throat slash motion. This means it's time for me to do my real job.
I come around the bar and tell the guy he's gotta go. He gives me a bit of lip. I tell him he has to leave on his own accord or I'm making him. He starts to say something again and before he can twitch, I've got him in an armbar with a maglite shoved in his armpit (nerve cluster there, move hurts like hell). I walk him out on his tippy-toes and then send him into the street when we get to the door.
Why'd I do it? It's my nature and it's my job. Drunk guy was a level 3. Me, in this situation, I'm the level 30. Should I have not thrown him out just because he was drunk and I knew I could have my way with him? Or should I have let him continue to harass everyone and be an ass?
Some are attempting to make the argument that I should have let him stay. Bull. Toss that annoying prick on his butt in the street.
The same goes for Amia. You're a brand new character, level 3. People know you're new to the area. Your character has zero rep. Your character is the drunk guy. The person your character is mouthing off to has been around for awhile, he's the level 30. He has connections to the area. He has a rep for liking to put mouthy people in their place. He's me... the bartender/bouncer, only instead of tossing drunks out on their ass, this guy slays demons, giants and mindflayers. There's a real chance this guy has had a one-on-one with some higher power or representative thereof. This guy practically glows with magic because of all the artifacts he carries around... and your character wants to try to punk him? Not smart, sir. Not smart.

my goblin friend, all your assumptions are wrong, and it was the most low level place in low leveldom you can come across. and I never play elves >_>
I wasn't aware you did not have to OOCly inform them, since your supposed to be aloud an OOC backdown I assume you should, and do myself. (did)
way I seeing this it was like an assassination of sorts, not exactly stealth ninja but sly none the less, I assumed in such cases where trickery was involved like -that- a DM should probably be present, especially since there was no hostiling, party I admit because of the scam, it was well RP'ed like I said, I have no problems with this event, I just, wanted to clarify the rules. and honestly now i'm just confused.
also unless you specify "I am subduing you with the flat of my blade" 1 hp is still a cut that got past your armour RPly, always has been. until -10 however your not dead weather it says your dead or not, you are knocked out, per diehard rules =) (I have always RPed death at -10, pnp and nwn.)
also for those that think i'm going off on a mad one still, please calm down, all consiquences from this -will- be acted out ICly not through PM's of screenies =) i'm not oocly angered, please, calm down, i've said this about six times now.

Fair enough. But as the scenario went by yours, it was opposite in mine. The annoying drunk pulls a knife on you and it's game over. He's the level 30, you're level dead.

That it's not the low level who's being a jerk. It just seemed that the whole scenario that was presented, painted a picture of an annoying lowbie trying to ~act cool~, which is according to some posts here a great offense - a lowbie should NEVER be allowed to be anything but a quiet coward with his d**k between his cheeks.
But the roles are reversed in every case that I've seen. It's the high level being the ignorant jerk AND the violent one.

Unfortunately is the sad truth that if you can't fight for yourself so people will not pick on you, and you have no one to stand up for you, that you will get your ass kicked if you mouth of someone who is stronger than you.
And they should be wise, not a coward, to not mouth someone of who is higher in level than they or, to put it differently, who can kill them in a single strike or with a single spell.
If they do decide to play a smart ass who insults everyone, all the power to them, but they should face the consequences that some people will not like a brat insulting them.

What is WITH this daft attitude where the lowbie is some kind of retard? Why is it ALWAYS the lowbie who is mouthing off? Some of the best responses to these posts have been about yes - mouthing off because it's IC to do so, in the case of Paladins vs Necromancers and so on. Is it wise, or is it just bullcrap RP to avoid situations because OOCly you KNOW the character who's being an arse is max level?
Think about it.

I'm not so sure it was, every attempt to escape was met swiftly with a delayed fireball, and thats the last time I look for the guard, considering someone found us, legged it, and did nothing about the three people tied to a tree, nor did anyone once I got back to town and screemed "necromancers" through the square, good luck when the vampires re-appear cordor XD he was in a renta house for nearly an hour after the reset and no one still would help me.
I do love playing an evil character, but I hate the fact that you can't -be- evil enough until a higher level. because, you do just get owned and spat out.
(unless its more on the cash laundering side of evilness > = ) )

Adjust and get smarter at being evil, level up to 30, or play that character on a server with a narrower level range. I'm not saying I like the effect the huge and completely counterintuitive gulf in fighting ability between lowbie and ECL30-with-PvP-gearset has on the way your characters plausibly act, but that effect is part of the setting and it is IC. Denying it is delusional, and I heavily recommend you keep the delusional component on the IC side of the player/character divide.

If your character's backstory is that of a whompy awesome killing machine, then you have inflicted player error on yourself.
Personally I get round this problem when I want to play a character that can't plausibly go through the utterly absurd development of 3-30 by grinding to epic without really saying anything that commital on the way up. I freely admit I am doing it wrong in such cases. Looksee: I already said so in the first line of this post when I wrote 'player error'.

I admit for amia its interesting to start from level 2, but if it we're a pnp campaign I would deffinatly have to de-level, as far as RP is related. level 0 commoners don't survive blue dragons.
but I see your point, and relatively to amia it makes sense I guess.

You do what your character would do. As a paladin you smite the necromancer. As a Kelemvorite you burn them. And if you can't do it alone you get help. And hey, just maybe your character might think "I don't think I am ready for this guy. better live than be dead." instead of "I shall smite and kill and fight with no regards to tomorrow because I am the hero!" I've seen both sides of the coin. I played necromantic evil doers, I played Druids and I played good Priests. And as it was said many times before: There is a difference between a level 2 fighter and a level 7 fighter. The level 7 can mouth of the level 2 and be an ass to him, or to anyone, and unless he gets beaten somehow.. why would he stop? When he KNOWS that no one can make him stop because he IS stronger. Same situation here. Goblin wrote: Think about it.

But the roles are reversed in every case that I've seen. It's the high level being the ignorant jerk AND the violent one. You don't comprehend. No one is calling either side a jerk, or arroant, or ignorant, or even violent. They are calling both sides "Roleplay", and to get bent out of shape over it like you are shows that you too need to remember that roleplay is roleplay, and entirely in character. No one has said the level 3 can't be a hot shot. No one has said that the level 3 can't be a snivelling coward. No one has aid anything except that "Roleplay has consequences".

It has been said repeatedly that if your character is not of sufficient level to say something then he should not say it. In the simplest terms: This is restricting roleplay and creating a necessity for roleplayers to be high level powerbuilds. If only to ~ICly~ combat the ~roleplayers~ who take the piss.
And to continue - saying that I'm bent out of shape over this is more insulting than having to read the same argument over, and over, and over again - if I didn't like what was said the first time it was said then I'm not going to like it any more now, am I? Even with all the arguments - and I'll admit, most of them are very good, everything STILL points to the present situation of NEEDING to be level 30 before your character will be taken seriously.

Why would you need levels to speak as though words have a level restriction? I can use my character Johanna as an example, and I've seen many others out there do similar. Say what your character would say... and that's it. If your character gets beaten up because of it, well, IC actions call for IC consequences. Or, you could find that words can actually get you -out- of conflict with use of wit and guile. Failing words, there's also a myriad of ways to get out of a fight using items, potions, and all sorts of gadgets out there. RP does not require a mad rush to level 30. Some of my most enjoyable RP moments have been at low level. I might add, too, that a lot of my character's pranks started from level 2, and caused conflict that was good practice to use words or feet to escape from.

Goblin, the sensible options are to suggest another solution to this problem*, adjust to the problem, or move away from the problem to a narrow level range server where it doesn't exist.
Having your characters act as if the problem doesn't exist on Amia is an option that will give you a sore forehead.
*I agree with Tormak's dismissal of your last one.

...my reality doesn't fit in with yours, there are no green men in mine. But I'll humour your fantasy. Whenever the Hulk shows up, police and military show up to stop him. They KNOW they're going to be squished and SMASHED as the trademark goes - but it's how their character is written, to stand there and shoot. But he's the Hulk. He's level 30 (presumably) and he gets away with it.

Having taken the time to read through this ever expanding thread, what I'm seeing is a LOT of condescension. Goblin, while perhaps a tad to enthusiastic, has a point. It's not always the lowbie doing the mouthing off, and I don't even think it's fair to look at it from that perspective. XP is a purely OOC mechanic, experience is something much different. You are not going to tell me that the player who ran to 30 and got there in a week is more "experienced" than my level 24 Field Marshal, who has "been around". That's as far as I can tell, the point of the DC system, to make RP experience count towards XP. That being said, the idea that you must be epic to RP seriously on this server is complete BS, you're not trying hard enough if you have that problem. Frankly I find the lower level RP to be better than the epic fair, once you're on top everyone is still as proud as ever, but now there is nobody bigger than them to force them to back down, very little gets done.

The ability to humiliate is gained at level 1 and is far stronger than any sword or spell. Its wounds last longer, too.

But that is neither here nor there as Nwn can't reflect such. That's the thing. In PnP, you have many DM's that bend the rules. There's lots of things that are shiny in PnP that are around level 10 and some characters that happen to reach epic could still be wearing lower level gear being that they either don't have the gold because they're wasting it on scrolls or what be it. I see it all the time when I tabletop. It would be arguing semantics, but there's no spell, no feat, nothing that can automatically tell you what level someone is which is my point. By how fast they take down something one could ASSUME, but assumption is never affirmation until it's affirmed. People think Mara's under level 10 because of what she wears, when in reality, she's much higher than that. Also I haven't seen anything in this thread about certain roleplay for certain levels about how a character should act. I see it as this... If say Mara walked up to say a female guard and slapped her with a glove at level 2 there'd still be consequences. If that guard was a higher level it's possible Mara would end up at the Salandran Temple recovering from a critical hit. Then she'd be jailed. I don't know why I smiled at that scenario.

I think it's terrible, cringeworthy RP to have a character who is meant to have a normally functioning brain act as if they think they are a big stompy badass when they really are not. I'm not always comfortable RPing around lowbies for precisely that reason; unless I know the player behind the wheel is sensible, I keep dreading the embarassing moment when some guy my epic studmuffin has seen run from trolls starts mouthing off. Because I'm courteous, I try to avoid a fight, which is often fine since many of my characters are in the CN/NG/CG/TN slice of the alignment pie, and they will indeed smile indulgently at the angry lowbie's toddler tantum, the same way I found it adorable when my parent's miniature Schnauser puppy bit me on the beard last weekend. Some of my characters, however, are in the LG/LN and Evil sectors, and they really shouldn't be so forgiving. It's terrible RP on my part to have them act so out of character for OOC courtesy's sake, but I do it anyway. Unless I'm playing Va, which by definition means I'm in a haze of drunken misanthropy. It's a shame that the level range does facilitate players with poor self esteem who try to compensate by pwning lowbies, but that's not really my problem since I'm supersexy at both levelling and PvP, so if they splat me Tuesday, I'll be back next Monday and rape them right up the nose.

" ...They KNOW they're going to be squished and SMASHED as the trademark goes - but it's how their character is written, to stand there and shoot..." It was answered quite well. Now please read my post consider what I'm trying to get across to you because you seem quite unreceptive to my side of the argument - a side which has been defended and re-posted over and over, even by people who disagree with the basis of what I'm saying. It's wholly unfair to claim that any character who is not ECL 30, and no challenge to ECL 30, must alter his/her character's traits and, well, character - to cater to numbers, and the ego of someone who might as well forego all the RP it takes to say " No. No. No. Stab", from Necromancer to Paladin in this situation. Or " No. No. No. Stab", from criminal to PC guard in this situation. I can completely understand that - yes - there are plenty of times where roleplay is a large element, where it's fun and lowbies made the choice for themselves, or things were RP'd without violence because players were courteous to their surroundings - in regards to NPC Guard presence. In regards to, by server rules, 'unlawful' PVP. It's not the things that 'lowbies' are saying to high levels. It's the things that high levels are getting away with. I'm not going to win this argument, too many people enjoy swatting lowbies evidently, in the belief that it's right to do so. So I can only take from that what's offered. The rules on Amia could do with some polishing in my opinion, with PVP in mind. Or if there are refined and clear rules for PVP I would make a suggestion that you sticky them or place them under an announcement - so that everyone has the opportunity to get acquainted with the common rules, and to avoid situations of needless bullcrap in the future.

And again, you're complaining about the low level 'having' to change his RP (he doesn't ... he can live with the consequences). What about the high level having to change their RP in your suggestion?

I'm not arguing anything. I was told in raw form: A low level character doing this should be killed. A low level character - should be cautious. A low level character - should know better. A low level character - IS a coward. And so on.
I'm with you on this one, a low level character has as much a right to be played in the manner in which he was created to be played - as the level 30.
Will you twist it again? And say something absurd like, "The level 30 should swat your fly of a character if he's mouthing off!" well don't. Because it's tiresome and it's been said several times now that no low-level is mouthing off. Or will you take the; "But it's RPly acceptable for the high level to attack your level three because..." stance again? Well don't, because I've already been given that information and I don't need it again. And the answer to that, is still, that it's not always RPly viable (in the sense of probability) for the high level character to strike the low level character and get away with it, see above scenarios suggesting NPC presence and - so - on. I think I covered everything with this one? Lets see who tears it apart just to 'be a douche' and 'add fuel to the fire'.

Ignoring NPC guards is an OOC offence, punishable by the DM in ways outlined in a thread currently on the top page. Not reporting people who do this is why players get away with it.
You've said you've seen it a few times but you've not said you reported it. Have you?

I've reported none of the offences I've witnessed.

Well what I meant by my post is that no one is telling anyone how to RP their characters. I have higher level characters, and lower levels (what irks me is I can never keep them in between >.<; ), and they generally act on how I would if I were in the situation. I agree if a character talks the talk and can't walk the walk, they need to be taught a lesson, be in regards of PnP or PvP, but characters who kill another character should ask for consent. It's more formal and you don't get into OOC discrepancies. Say for instance you spit on a guard on duty in the middle of Cordor. Harassment. Fined or Jailed, possibly thrown out of Cordor. I forget what town it was in Amia B, but there was one where pickpocketers lost their hand if caught. Which I love how that was done being that there are some places that actually DO that. It makes realism flow more. Though with PvP I believe a consensual warning, faction or not, if something can KILL a player it should be requested and made clear, even if they can talk the talk and walk the walk and it's even worse on Local Vault. Most of my builds can hold their own in their level range. Some can handle a little bit of a higher level range. If one of my characters smarts off, there's an opposite reaction. However if they wish to PvP me, they should ask before just acting on it. Something similar happened to me years ago when I had Tera Li'ndari on Amia. A drow clan that we, we were hunting in a party of three, didn't even have any IC interaction with because they were HiPSing captured the three of us including Tera who were hunting. They killed us without any warning, ICly raised us, and tried to haul us off as slaves. Tera being resourceful, cut the rope with her dagger, ran off, and without warning started casting again, when I just did the quickest thing possible, retaliate, haste, get far enough away, cast Improved Invis, and then get back to Cordor, which Tera didn't talk the talk, but she walked the walk and I RPed it accordingly. After the escape they tried looking for Tera. They had someone that could enter Cordor in their party and then metagamed my position and then the drow house leader of the group sent me a tell saying that he'll let it slide because he was in a good mood, which to me, that doesn't excuse the incident. I can feel for Glyph in this instance being that this has happened to me then and it happened to me recently which someone took screenshots and PM'ed them to a DM. There should be warning in instances like that. I agree if they're pompous that they should be taught a lesson, but it's as equally a bad form of RP without a consensual warning even if you can walk the walk. It's just proper etiquette, respect, and ethics. Of the events that transpired, I reported the one with Tera, and the one that recently happened was also reported. Level 3 or 30. Glyph's party was tricked, then no consensual warning or anything, slaughtered. He wasn't talking any talk or walking any walk, and from the sound of it, nor were his party members else they wouldn't have been tricked. Faction or not, level 3 or 30, it still should be consensual. That's just my two cents though. Most of this topic is arguing semantics rather than making resolve with the OP. Glyph's characters aren't pompous, the ones I've seen, so that blows the whole talk the talk out of the water.

I admit that I now don't really understand what you are saying, Goblin. Do you feel that levels put constraints on RP?

It's possible to defeat other players without ever entering PVP or rolling dice, I do it all the time with characters of varying levels and alignments. You just have to be a bit clever about it.

No. I'm saying that roleplay between 3's and 30's is dictated by level in some cases. It's been said on this thread in reply to my own posts that some players will actually avoid RPing if possible, with lower levels, because of how lower levels are played.
I am saying that a low level character, on the opinion of some people who have replied to my posts on this thread, does not deserve the same credibility as a high level character - regardless of roleplay including background.
I am saying that level is not a constraint on roleplay - until level becomes a constraint on roleplay through PVP. At which point it becomes a necessity to achieve a higher ECL to validate a low (now high) level character's roleplay.

Funny how you choose to twist their words. It's not credibility that they lack, it's capability or, more specifically, combat capability.Goblin wrote: I am saying that level is not a constraint on roleplay - until level becomes a constraint on roleplay through PVP. If you choose to RP your character as being far stronger than his level, then it is your character who is delusional, not the higher level who effortlessly wipes them across the floor.

If the "roleplay background" for your character Killsoul Darkblade is he is the biggest badass in Faerun and has single-handedly slaughtered entire armies, and Killsoul Darkblade is level 2, then your background is bad (and your roleplaying is probably bad too).

I've had high level characters act fearfully towards my half orc barbarian who is still in the low-mid level range now I believe. As a player who consents to the 'You're low level, don't act like an idiot or you will be kicked in the teeth' rule, at lower levels nearly everybody needs to swallow their pride. I've had racist abuse hurled at my Half Orc and ICly I'd like to say 'well he's a big badass and will kick your ass' but even the dumbest creatures need -some- survival instincts. Does it really look like a good idea to attack the guy standing in front of you buffed out of his skull with some huge monster which he treats like a pet? I have seen people be bullied by higher level characters when they see them turning in orc/kobold quests though, and that didn't seem fair to me at all, but you gotta roll with the punches.
I'm not saying the current system is totally fair, but all systems we create are imperfect. IRL I don't go round mouthing off to everybody I see unless they take the first step, but even if they do and they are a 6'4 beast muscled out of his mind with tattoos and bloodshot eyes because he's been snorting too much coke, I might think twice about taking up that challenge.
