There are many people who use Necromancy. There are not many True Necromancers.

"True Necromancer" is a questionable term. It has entirely different interpretations depending upon which set system or setting you are referring to. Or even time.
And yes, I know the EO is canon. I said not formally canon.

True Necromancer is a class, and it's one that uses both Divine and Arcane magic, because limiting yourself to one method is foolish!

Just scoped out the class. More of those kind of necromancers would certainly give the EO something to do. Though calling themselves "true" necromancers is a good joke everyone can share in laughing at.

I wont derail this anymore than this one post, but my problem with True Necromaners on amia is a build strength one (Yes, hate me) Its too difficult to split 2 completely seperate casting classes, with two seperate casting stats that wouldn't have just been crazy more effective when being a Pure Necromancer Mage or Pure Necromancer Cleric. My character Aurelius is a CL 29 Wizard Specialized, Basic/Greater/Epic Focused Necromancer (No other Focus) with 1 Custom Necro spell currently, and two more basically approved waiting for DCs.. I'd like to say hes a True Necromancer.. but lore/class wise.. I just cant..

Necromancy is a school - and there's certain things in that school which are slightly anthema towards the kelemvorite faith, Some but not everything
Edit - Im sure a lore monkey can explain it more properly.

san wrote: Sure i read somewhere that some Kelemvorites practice Necromancy.. did i dream this? As the Eternal Order puts it, there are three kinds of necromancy: White, Grey and Dark/Black. White Necromancy consists of goodie goodie spells like Greater Restoration, Undeath to Death etc. Grey Necromancy consists of spells that... aren't really good or bad. I can't remember any of those spells. Negative energy damage spells are those, I think. Dark/Black Necromancy is the kind of stuff the Kelemvorites, or at least Amian Eternal Order, despise and spells like Animate Dead, and drain life and whatnot belong to this set. We have a huge list of spells and in which category they belong, but I can't be arsed to look for it. EDIT: And to answer your question, yes, some Kelemvorites study necromancy in order to use it for good and have knowledge with which to overcome their enemies, people who use the necromancy "wrong" and for "evil". Gagis, for instance, is specialized in necromancy and blasts every undead into smithereens with his UtD.

Edit - Im sure a lore monkey can explain it more properly. Broadly speaking, creating undead and soul magic is what's "evil" necromancy. Things like death ward and destruction are just as evil as the caster and reasons it's employed as premonition or IGMS. Of course this doesn't take into account Jergalite 'sanctioned' undead, Mulhorandi mummies and Elven baelnorns but that's why churches have conflict at all - because interpretation and technicalities were made to be fought over.

Yep.
In short, Necromancy doesn't equal bad to a Kellie in every case. And to the point, Necromancer doesn't always equal bad either, as per the aforementioned reason. Kelemvor is concerned with life altering magics and animation of the dead.

Yossarin wrote: This causes me to think about them in unique and creative ways, and how they interact with the entire Kelemvorite faith in general. I suspect that the Kelemvorite faith monitors its followers, and those who display a great deal of personal aggression are sent in the direction of the Eternal Order. Oh, of course, when the EO hears about this they don't receive a note from the church saying, "This guy goes around really pissed off all the time - you take him!" No, they get something proclaiming the fellow's pure (self-)righteousness and a litany of accolades. The main church, in my mind, has a huge investment in "good PR" at the moment, considering the entire faith is only 20-something years old and they have a ton of work to do in order to get the global population as familiar with the reality of death as Kelemvor wants. Ergo, the church dumps their anger management cases into the Eternal Order, the ones they can't pacify on the proselytizing front, because they know they'll learn discipline in the EO (and have a place to put their natural desire for conflict to use). Hoho, I like this interpretation!

Just beware summoning undead as a Jergalite would normally equal a fall so hard you... well, you get the idea. Least thats what Yoss informed me.

It sure would. Sanctioning undead is not something done lightly. It must have solid and meaningful purpose. Which means, summoning a vampire to hunt for epic loot or to kill someone because your PC is mad at them as a priest of Jergal would mean your failure as a priest.

That was the first draft that got outdated as soon as it came out. Might as well remove it from the wiki, so no-one thinks of it as actual lore. Our main idea with the whole classifying of necromancy was to prevent a legion of shitstorm from unleashing and a sort of a code the common man could look at and say "If I do this, I'm dead." It is entirely IC, but diminutively for OOC reasons as well.

Gray Necromancy is like your debuffing spells (ray of enfeeblement, ray of sickness) and probably some of the assortment of necromancy spells that don't involve raising/buffing the undead, like frigid touch.
