Nope. Golem 101, all golems have an animating elemental spirit.

I have a question, very amia oriented..."custom" spells...such as ball of sound for example, is it a quest? do I need to pay DC's and learn from someone who knows? do I...

i've been looking for a day, and I even searched the entire monolith for a clue for the arcane type ones, nothing. and its not the right time of day for the wizards to be online, nor have I found any druids in the grove...

feel free to answer find out icly, but I am frankly lost, and I don't know oocly if its a request thing or an in game thing.

ed: to clarify, I don't mean custom ranged and custom self, I mean the ones with names.

They're placeholders that do absolutely nothing and probably never will. They do pretty vFX though.

Are there any objections for us snagging them as we level to use as placeholders for pnp spells during events and what not? I'm a sucker for special effects.

I don't have an isue with it, but it's going to depend on the DM you're with at the time.

That's fine, I know everyone's got their own rules, and I'll always bow to those. I just wanted to make sure I'm not going to get in trouble for selecting them at level up.

Oh, no, not at all, but if you're abard or a sorceror, you do need to realize that's one of your spell slots, and you shoul d probably decalre what single solitary PnP spell it is, since the point of a sorceror and abard is that they have less spells to choose.

on a similar note, I am struggling to find -lore- related to creating magic, the DMG is pretty clear with the stats but nearly nothing on lore, except that wizards should have explody spells, druids plant related spells, clerics heal...etc...

from um...irl research >_> I would assume it involves rutial, or channeling the power for the spell and containing it in a symbol...stuff like that ? depending on the school of magic, and also divine or arcane-ness.

I am obviously going to try this ICly, and find help icly if I can, I struggled alot to find anyone to help with the staff cause its pnp based...but I am optimistic that there are some knowledgable wizards around =D

not going to request any spells right now but I have spoted a few pnp ones that could work, and i'm not scared to use the stat boxes and my imagination to try to make a completely new one either =)

It likely would vary by individual character as well as class.

Wizard:
Research, experiments, and more research. The Weave is a series of systems and numbers to most wizards(like the Matrix), they just gotta figure out the formula- words, gestures and components- to get whatever effect they're looking for out of it.

Sorcerer:
Research, experiments, possibly rituals but I'd figure mostly trial and error. Figuring out how to use/awaken their power in different ways. The reason I say rituals, is because supposedly most sorcs magic comes from their magical inheritance. Whatever "new" spell they're looking for might be based off of or derived from an ability of their magical ancestor.

Cleric & Pladain:
Research, meditation, prayer and worthiness. Research to find out what exactly it is that they want, if it would be in line with their god's portfolio and agenda, and if the god has ever done something like that before. Meditation to think on what it is they want and prayer to quite simply ask for the spell. That's how divine spells work after all. When a cleric or paladin prays(rests), they're likely asking things like "[Deity], give me the ability to smite my enimies with you fire!"(Slots Flame Strike) and so on. Worthiness because, well if you're asking for something new, special, and particular of your deity beyond what he/she already does, you've gotta have shown them or prove to them that you're worthy of it. Why should Talos give you a spell to summon a hurricane for 20d8 damage and knockdown if you've never done anything significant to further his goals, yanno?

Druid:
Research, prayer, ritual and meditation. Similar to cleric, but I'd think something heavier on the meditation side. Becoming more "one" with nature. Likely meditating in or around whatever element their new spell is to be of and rituals involving the same. Wanna summon a volcano? Go hang out near one. Get the feel of it. Etc, etc.

Bard:
Pffft. Bards. They shouldn't be developing anything anyway!(IMO) Ruddy pilferers. *grumble* But I suppose a mix of what Wizards and Sorcs do. Since how bards "cast" magic depends on how they're RPed, it would vary by bard.

But in the end, it depends on your request, your character, his/her class, and whatever else the DMs say it hinges on. These are just my personal guidelines I came up with when I should be getting ready for frickin' Statics.

I read that majority of sorceres draw their power from their blood connection to dragons.

How much dragon blood is there circulating around the people of Toril? And does that mean most sorcerers, if they have the urge to, can tap this blood and become a dragon disciple?

Sorcerers can trace their bloodlines to any number of things, including fey, infernals, celestials, outsiders in general, etc. Anything that could possibly sire offspring with a penchant for magic can be your host-body.

Be cool. Play an alien sorcerer.

I don't want to play some weird bloodline. Just wanted to know the likely origins of my sorc's power. And I'm trying to figure out what makes a dragon disciple a dragon disciple. I thought at first they were special. But after reading that most sorcs can trace their magic to dragons... they don't seem so special anymore.

Generally, a DD needsto actively persue their Art and activate their bloodline through it, I'd wager. most likely through rituals researched and studied by them, or passed down by disciples who've discovered someone has draconic potential and wants to see it realized. Note, I said nothing about the subject having to be willing to see their draconic potential activated. I could easily see it activating spontaneously as their skill with their innate magic strengthens.

Dragon Disciple Requirements:
Have 8 ranks of Arcana
Must Speak Draconic
Ability to cast arcane spells without preparation.
Can not already be a dragon or have the dragon racial type. (Half-dragon etc)

To my knowledge this is how it works:

Dragon disciples intend to become more aligned with the Dragon breed of their bloodtype.
They do this by either having a Draconic patron they serve, or, discovering research and rituals already done by someone else.
They: Specifically Activate their powers through rituals.
They: Specifically focus on the traits and behaviors of their color/type.
They: Should have or shoot for the Alignment of their breed.
Think monastic devotion, instead of power of the body for martial combat, its the focusing of the blood to become more like a dragon, but not just any dragon. One specific kind.

1. FRwiki now is geared for 4e info. Which means sorcerers come in flavors like dragon sorcerer, chaos, and cosmic. Which his sheeet. SHEEEET.

2. Any magical creature that can breed with a humanoid can be the source of Sorcerous power. The most "common" of these magical progenitors is indeed the Dragon species. But again, it can be practically any magical creature that can get kinky with a humanoid race. Now "how much" or "how many" sorcerers are of draconic heritage, like a percentage, that has never been said, and never will be. And no where have I read that a "majority" of sorcerers are draconic, only that a good deal of them are. That's just there as a guideline anyway when it comes to PC characters.

As far as "any" sorcerer being able to tap draconic blood, well its "any" sorcerer that has a draconic bloodline and the will to go into disciplehood. Most people don't think about a sorcerer's bloodline until they decide to go Dragon Disciple though, which irks me... but whatev. Not every sorcerer has draconic blood. Those who have it, have it, and those who don't, don't.

Sorcs are very special. And again, it never says "most" sorcs are draconic from what I recall, at least in 3e and 3.5. Your sorcs orgins for their bloodline are whatever you decide they are. But if you're looking to "find out", find my PC in game. Do it. Do it now. 8)

It's fair to state that draconic sorcerers may not be more numerous than any other; dragons are recognizable creatures with very tell-tale features, meaning that someone with draconic traits will be able to easily discern the nature of their heritage. Compare this to, say, someone with a sorcerous bloodline from the outer planes, or from the Far Realms, or the fey. There are far too many possibilities there, with far too great an individual variation, for most creatures to ever accurately ascertain their parentage.

Compared to angels/infernals/aliens/fey, dragons are relatively mundane and recognizable. Scales, wings, and other such traits pretty much tell you all you need to know.

its not supported on amia so you'd have either take it as a secondary homage type deity, RPly, or um...ask a DM if you can have a deity with similar portfolio for the mechanics and RP that it is dorsain. maybe, imo.

green alien disciples?? I think its about time we tried to nail this geneology thing, its getting confusing xD

There are aliens in D&D. They are aliens as we think of them. They are from outside the known universe, in the vast reaches of space Beyond Us. There is even a PRC devoted to them (alienist) and the pseudonatural creatures associated with them.

Abberrations are generally known as aliens, iirc. Beholders, Mind Flayers, Cloakers, Aboleths. Those kinds of things I -think- originated from the Far Realm.

They did, but compared to some of the stuff out there they're pussies. They're not really aliens any longer, either, since they are well-known (kind of) and actually interact with the world outside of streaking across the sky like comets.

I've tried to find some information on the Obyrith Lords, but sadly it seems to mostly come from scattered lore here and there and has no concentrated source (that I can find). So if anyone has a good source of information on the following please:

- Asima
- Bechard
- Cabiri
- Dagon
- Kizarvidexus
- Malgoth
- Pale Night
- Queen of Chaos
- Sertrous
- Ubothar
- Ugudenk
- Veshvoriak

Information on both Dagon and Pale Night can be found in Hordes of the Abyss 3.5. My friend is also a font of knowledge in regards to the other Obyrinth lords. P.S Dagon -rocks- XD I can ask him about the others.

I don't think he's an FR God, since by the sound of this he's only from the Libris Mortis, although judging from this in fourth edition he is Forgotten Realms, which would seem to indicate that he was in 3rd, too.

This quote is taken from 'Maid Service' the veritable font of demonic knowledge.

Back in the day the Queen had the Abyss more or less unified, so much as it could be unified. At the time there was a great big Law vs Chaos conflict going on. The Queen's trump card at the time was Miska. But she ran into a few problems. For various reasons not all of the lords were keen on rallying under the Queen's banner. And in addition to this, some guys called the Wind Dukes of Aaqa supposedly managed to defeat/imprison Miska using some thing called the Rod of Law, which became the Rod of Seven Parts if I recall correctly. After that happened the Queen's rule fell apart, and she retired into her personal layer. She hasn't been very active since then.

One of the lords that didn't kiss her ass was Cabiri the Watcher. As the name suggests, he watched. He was very big on knowledge and such. I believe he foresaw the way the war was going to end out, hence his decision to opt out of it.

He took to wandering the planes to uncover secrets and such. Eventually he found out something that brought him into Yugoloth territory, and whatever that was it gave the loths the idea that he needed to be shoved into his personal prison at the Wells of Darkness.

That's all we know, or rather that's availiable in various source material about the Obyrinths other than Dagon and Pale Night which can be found in the hordes of the abyss.

There seems to be Mist dragons in NWN, would one be able to become a Mist Dragon Disciple then?
I can't seem to be able to find any proper information about the dragons themselves either..

Question about blackguards:

According to the lore I've seen on them, blackguards gain their powers from dealing with fiends, and it's a pre-requisite to gaining blackguard levels in pnp. To have made contact and deals with a "peaceful" evil outsider.

Ingame however, the blackguard special abilities are listed as gifts from your "dark deity".

On Amia, do they either get their powers from the fiends they deal with, or the deity they serve? Because the two can end up headbutting in some instances.

Not a Kara-tura dragon, just looks like one, they were a weird and not commonly mentioned dragon back in 2nd I dont even think Mist dragons made it to 3rd. The dragons of Kara tur and other Oriental adventure settings are as follows:

Yu lung (carp dragon)
Chiang Lung (River Dragon)
Li Lung (Earth Dragon)
Lung Wang (Sea Dragon)
Pan Lung (Coiled Dragon)
Shen Lung (Spirit Dragon)
Tien Lung (Celestial Dragon)
Tun Mi Lung (Typhoon Dragon)

I'm pretty sure it can be either. In the case of those getting their powers from an evil deity, the fiend serves as an intermediary/brokering agent, I guess you could say. Though not always entirely for the sole purposes of the deity.

If they in actuality serve a fiend (or archfiend), they get the powers from them. Though the fiend they actually met with doesn't *have* to be the one granting their powers. Demogorgon, Grazz't, or Mephistopheles isn't going to take time out of his busy schedule to meet with every wannabe BG who invoked his name.

Tuomas was provided copies of three tomes recently, two of which written by one Macros Darksun. (Demon Lords V1, Demon Lords V2, and Greater Demon Summoning, all in game items and I can advise the DM's where they were found if need be in confidence, I am uncertain if these're tied to the process leading up to a BG's Summon RP or no).

While obviously not interested in their direct subject matter, he has been asked to Analyze them, and try to learn all he can. Is there a specific DM whom I can forward further queries and actions related to them?

Nothing in the blackguards description states where they gain their dark and profane powers from, I would surmise that the peaceful contact with a lower planer requirement is more akin to represent an act of terrible evil and malice that such peaceable contact represents for a mortal being, after all only a truly twisted mortal being could stand face to face with an evil outsider and chit chat about what souls taste like.

Also note evil outsider is a bit broader then just fiends, Effreti, Fallen upper planers, many of the more terrible far planer beings and a multitude of other beings are evil outsiders. However due to the (Native) descriptor added to tieflings (and other plane touched) they are not otherwise being a blackguard would be as simple as having a drink with Joe the evil tiefling down a the pub.

Are there any really famous bards that anyone can link to? Only one I found on FR wiki was a chosen of mystra, so that doesent count in my book. From the top of my head I believe there was a bard who was made a god after some event too?

Yep, Finder wyvernspur slew the god Moander (with the aid of Tymora), and seized his godhood. It gave him power over change and renewal, especially in art, as well as some power over decay.

Their powers and spells are, however, divine in nature. In FR, this means they must come from a deity or another powerful outsider. So it's reasonable to suppose that the contact they must make is related to the source of their powers; why would Bane require you to meet some random succubus of the Abyss before giving you powers?

But anyhow: we definetely know Blackguards can be god-sponsored: Scyllua Darkhope of Bane is a Blackguard. I bet you could find Blackguards sponsored by other evil outsiders with a quick Google search too, if you were so inclined.

In addition to Finder, there's of course the Harper and Chosen of Mystra Storm Silverhand. There are plenty of locally famous bards, but I can't think of any other globally famous ones. Candlekeep probably has a list of all known Bard NPCs in the Realms, so look there and find out who they are. Elfsong is still the best FR novel about bards, though. Also, Ed Greenwood's novels and many 2e game books have tons of songs, poems and rhymes that cite the "author." You might want to compile a list of those so you can look like a classically educated bard who knows his tradition. That's the first thing I'll do if I ever roll a bard again, at least.

EDIT: That list is here.
