In other words, it's like shooting someone with a silver bullet to see if they're a werewolf. You can't control the "force" of the bullet(smite) once you pull the trigger. And wether they're a werewolf or not, it's still going to harm them.

I disagree with your analogy - a silver bullet will do the same damage to a werewolf as it would to a human. Whereas smite evil will not do anywhere near as much damage to a non-evil as it would to an evil. It can be two orders of magnitude greater I believe.

On top of that, punching someone with combat strength in the plate armour is still laughable as far as pain goes.

*Sigh* I believe you missed the metaphor.

Werewolves are supposedly very vunerable to silver in mythology (Please don't get into the actual lore or whatever happens to be the case with it, it's not the point).

Anyway, you pretty much just said back to me what I already said, with the exception of the silver bullet thing. You cannot smite someone without intentionally trying to combat/harm them. Yes, one will hurt more than the other. The threshold of how much is not what matters. It's the mere fact that you may harm an innocent. And that's something a paladin should strive never to do except in the most dire of cases.

It's not something you can rationalize out like you're trying, IMO.

I would argue that the deities disagree - at least those of a Good or Lawful alignment.

You're probably right lore-wise for almost all of them. I know I wouldn't let any of my players get away with it in a PnP game without the right deity and a good wordsmith. Although I would argue that some deities it may be iffy for, but not to breaking point. However, since you control the deities your argument holds more weight

It's exactly the case.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary wrote:
Smite

transitive verb
1 : to strike sharply or heavily especially with the hand or an implement held in the hand
2 a : to kill or severely injure by smiting b : to attack or afflict suddenly and injuriously <smitten>
3 : to cause to strike
4 : to affect as if by striking <children>
5 : captivate, take <smitten>
intransitive verb
: to deliver or deal a blow with or as if with the hand or something held

That's what it is, that's what it does. You can't really argue that an attack isn't and attack.

Nice dictionary definition, now let's have some context - where is the 'imbibe magic from your god that will severely damage anything that is evil in the absolute sense but will otherwise not harm the subject'?

'Imbibe magic from your god that will severely damage anything that is evil in the absolute sense but will otherwise not harm the subject' is closer to the definition than "Gingerly tap something to see if it's evil or not."

Either way, DMs have long ruled it at this point, and in the end, it's all that matters. Semantics be damned.

I never said gingerely tap. You can punch them in their chest as brutally as you like, and if they're wearing armour chances are that it'll be entirely laughable (unless you're evil, of course).

Then why does it still hurt someone if you attack someone just wearing a fullplate and helm unarmed? (no gloves, no nothing). You can't rationalize everything in the game.. Not to perfect logic at least.

To quite Bioware: "There are many unusual items[things] in the game. This is one of them."

No you can't. But, with the RP of others, you can certainly gleam over a few of the mechanical failings.

Bitchslap if smite evil?

Aaanycase, a punch in itself would deal nonlethal damage in pnp, it still would count as an attack and considering that most melee's have a lot of strength, enough to kill a normal level 1 commoner in a single hit even, is a punch still very much lethal.

Can someone tell if a paladin is using Detect Alignment? If so, is it grounds for instant hostile action?

They have to stare at you for 18 straight seconds to figure out that it is you that is evil, so I'd say yes. As for grounds for hostile actions - definitely. Smack them as hard as you can and keep going until they die.

Actually they would only know that you radiate an aura of evil. Mind, that doesn't has to be you. You just might have a sword with you which you used to slay demons with, and who is coated in their blood, and hence does radiate an evil aura which will grow weaker over time.

Also, if they break Line of sight do they need to start all over again.
Not to forget that some simple sheet of metal might help too.

It depends how specific 'location' is. Given that it has to be within line of sight, I'd assume it would discriminate, and everything you can't see is just a direction.

I would assume that the time you stare would have to be contiguous.

The only problem with calling that is that unless you add in some visuals of your own, it's not exactly obvious that a paladin would be using it. I mean, you can stare at someone for 18 seconds streight through the course of a conversation. And if you attack a paladin just because he's been looking at your for 18 seconds, you're probably gonna help him with the assumption that you're less-than-good. >_>

I personally think the block of wood and sheet of lead counters are ridiculous. If you're behind either, why the heck is the paladin still staring at you? They don't have x-ray vision, last I checked. You could just as well just walk behind any decent visual obstruction to break line of sight, I thought.

You can, but that doesn't block the spell. It will still pick up evil in your direction, so long as you're within the cone.

granted, you could as well clubber him with that.

Then again, staring might be posed.. but no one has to, albeit you should.
And then we get into the matter of posing time. 18 seconds is short. It takes me roughly 20 seconds to come up with a reasonable and well typed reply, even more so when there is a lot happening.

Ergh, there I am thinking about possible abuse of it when its pretty much useless, talking about ways to abuse the rules, or the non existence of said rules rather. >.<

Well, if a sheat of lead doesn't work - let's find the lawyers and sue the paladins!

Depends on the deity, if I was watching. Ron's stance is his own. A Paladin of Hoar I couldd see striking someone if they deserved it,, and adding an oomph to check for evilness, sins that must be paid for.

I couldn't see a Lathanderan doing it, though.

To be honest, Hoar was the deity that came to my mind first :P I could also imagine a Mulhorandic deity allowing it against a non-Mulhorandic. Not sure what the other pantheons think ... I doubt either the dwarvish or elven pantheons would be impressed, and I've no idea about the Celestial Bureaucracy of Kara-Tur or other pantheons either.

With elves, Divine Champion is probably the closest you would get, but there's AFAIK no rule against an elven paladin of the Seladrine. I think it's a bit wonky myself, but that's just personal opinion since I don't think any of the Seldarine are LG... so paladins don't make much sense.

You can have elven paladins of other gods, though.

I'm particularly fond of how Divine Champion gets Smite Infidel instead of Smite (Align) in PnP. The person you're smiting just has to have an align different than your gods, and it works. >_> Pwn-time for teh infidels! We smites them noaw!

PnP spells in general can make RP messy due to the insane amount of OP spells.

Well, that is why there is mutual consent and DM overhead in some cases. Players don't simply get to cast Wish or Control Weather or Tsunami, for example.

Funny that detect evil would detect demon blood, shouldnt a pally's weapon just be coated in that anyway?
