@ Maryn, CC Grymia and Gers Re: Sending -
There's no reason for Sending to be effected by Mind Blank. As mentioned, it's not actually Mind-Affecting. It's also not an Enchantment. Since it's Evocation, that implies that it is an actual force or energy being cast. It doesn't specify where or how you hear this message, but even if its all in your head and not actually an audible manifestation (which really seems more likely, being Evocation) that it's likely just like hearing any other sound and knowing it isn't your own thoughts. Presumably, you hear the words (in your head or audibly) in the voice which spoke/sent them (also not explicitly stated, but reasonable to assume since you know who the sender is) and if you hear it audibly, you would also reply verbally.

:!: Since the spell is entirely vague on the manifestation, I think this would be one of those details that'd be good for the DMs to make a decision on. Is it audible, like words on the wind, or is it only in the recipient's head - and does the recipient have to actually speak the words to send in reply.

If the Sending is only in the recipient's head and not audible, there's really no reason for a recipient to need to block it. I imagine it's easy enough to just ignore if someone was trying to magically spam you every ten minutes or something. If the recipient was being held captive and said captors wanted to keep their prisoner from being able to receive Sendings, they'd simply have to use spells that block magic with less discrimination.

pretty curious on this part actually! do you think your replies, or sendings, or do you have to verbalize them?

There is no mention of a need to write, read, hear or say anything in the description of the spell. It's vague for a reason, I'd imagine. It can probably be anything from something verbal, visual, both or something conjured within the minds of the parties involved.

The reason Mind Blank would not block a Sending is something else completely. You're over thinking it, imo.

Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

Simple as that. There is no spell resistance and there is no saving throw possible.

Note: this is my interpretation, and not necessarily the DM teams view on it.

There are several spells that block scrying; Sequester and Mord's Private Sanctum spring to mind. You can't scry into an Antimagic Field. An area-of-effect Mord's Disjunction would destroy the sensor. There are lots and lots of ways to break a scrying prematurely.

That's what I figured, it's pretty much a hidden status effect that can be dispelled and such (I know that's not the right definition, just a way of explaining it) as well as blocked by things that conceal the mind.

Tormak, from what your saying, would you say sendings are entirely mental then, and not verbalized to be sent? Just want to make sure I understand.

It literally says it in the text. It's not vague at all.

Quote:
You contact a particular creature with which you are familiar and send a short message of twenty-five words or less to the subject. The subject recognizes you if it knows you. It can answer in like manner immediately

You send telepathically. They reply telepathically. No confusion or argument to be had.

Im looking for a list of different materials that are used to make armor and weaponry. Including the magical and lesser known stuff. i am wanting something that states magical properties (if any), the density (or weight associated with different items), how its produced if its one of the rarer types, availability, etc. I know there HAS to be some spreadsheet from a source book somewhere. Anything super nerdy and lists ratings for malleability, ductile, and luster gets a cookie.

I introduce you, sir, to one of my very favorite books: Image

All of your questions can be answered within it's pages. Just keep in mind Amia's inflation rate and that requests for armor made from some of the more exotic materials could potentially be denied. You can likely find it in PDF format on the Internet.

A bit more of a basic answer than the sourcebook that just ninjad me, but heres a couple links:

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/specialMaterials.htm
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/exploration.h ... dHitPoints

There's no 'real' stats, but you can compare them to each other.

The basic special materials

Anything else, you're probably looking at a specific lore book or whatnot. Or hell, ad lib off of the properties of the creature, for hides and stuff. Wyvern hide resisting poison, Displacer Beast skin making you magically blurry(I actually think that's the lore of our Cloak of Displacement).

Edit: Dang Cloak and Dagger.

I heard from an unverified source that it's a bit iffy to preform a RDD ritual with kobolds due to their dragon heritage. I mean, they're basically descendants from all types of dragons - Imagine trying to focus a ritual out of that.
I'd better ask dusty if it's all right at all, since he's the kobold expect and also invite Letumlux into a li'll conversation before i pursue such a path with the character.

Otherwise i could just go pure CON barbarian and laugh a little at the insane HP the kobold will get.

Yeah. I'd say pursuing that path for a kobold is a little like drinking a random magical potion and realise the day after you slept with Arnold Schwarzenegger and that you're pregnant with his child, not to mention you now have boobies and enjoy watching TV-Shop in the middle of the day.

You have NO IDEA what you could unleash.

One of Io's many messenger sorts (when he does bother to interfere) is a Half-Dragon, Half-Kobold. If that combo exists, then yes, it could be believable that Kobold Dragon Disciples can as well once the pure dragon blood dilutes, etc, etc. Mechanically speaking, Kobolds do not share the same sub-type as True Dragons and Half-Dragons, hence they are eligible for the rites and such that the class requires (they are reptilian at base).

The only variety of Kobold that shouldn't be able to become a Dragon Disciple are the Dragonwrought, and that is due to their sub-type already having been shifted before their hatching (technically before the egg is even created as Dragonwrought eggs are unique and differ from that of the typical Kobold).

I highly recommend reading the Races of the Dragon section on Kobolds.

Curiosity with potion brewing. Some spells in the SRD don't list any material components. What, exactly, are normal ingredients in a potion? Water? Some other sort of fluid? Any other sort of ingredients that wouldn't exactly be a material component, but also necessary for the potion to function? I'm about to embark on some crafter RP where some of this stuff is delved pretty deeply into, so I'd like to know what the norm is.

I generally go by the rule that if a spell doesn't have a material component listed that you go In Character and do the research. With a DM.

Who would be me, since I'm totally in love with Alchemy and such and my main character is currently researching potions.

I'm perfectly willing to go that route.

A disclaimer, though. I'm in no way well-versed on the technicalities of magic. All I know is what I can read on the SRD.

Does anyone know if there is anything akin to the native american shaman or spiritualist in FR? The nature deities that I know of are more about protecting the wilderness, and less about talking to spirits of nature and ancestors. At least that has been my take. Perhaps I'm just putting too narrow a scope on what it means to be a druid or a cleric of of a nature deity?

Thanks in advance.

Ulutiu has a similar angle. But he is an arctic deity, more inuit style, as opposed to the native american style Uthgardt. A possibility, given the amount of cold areas in the Amia gameworld.

But...eh, really, though, I don't think Spiritualism is something that is restricted to a particular kind of people. If youre looking for the attitude of shamanism, rather than the look and feel....it can be done for anyone, I think. It's more of an attitude toward the nature of divine magic. You could easily see your Animal Companion is some kind of Totemic creature (I mean, it summons and unsummons right enough). Your Summon Creature # spells are the servants of your deity, who are the long dead petitioners who have joined him in his own realm and taken on more feral forms through the passage of time. Ie, the spirits of your ancestors. And so on.

...And there's a Spiritualist job. Ive taken a couple of ranks in it for my character (Who is neither a Cleric nor a Druid). Although, tbh, I've not used it yet. Not had the chance. But it certainly read like the speak with ancestor thing when I took it.

Uthgar and Ulutiu are more totem focused, than spirit focused. Spirits are through totems, in their faiths. Uthgar isn't very Native American-like either, imo.

As for Native American style shaman in FR, yes they do exist. The continent of Maztica -- the FR America -- has many many shaman of tribal people who worship spirits. It's almost exactly like Native American spirit worship, only more romanticized, naturally. The only thing is that trying to bring one of those to Amia would be really tough to justify realistically. If you don't have a real good story and reason, it will come off as super cheesy and cliche, imo.

How about Chultans? They're Amia-worthy enough that they're their own defined subrace. They're a bit more Africa-ish than Native America-ish, but they have full-on shamanistic spirit worshipers. From Amia's own subrace page:

Subraces Page wrote:
There are three dominant forms of religion among Tabaxi people, though all differ greatly from the usual Faerûnian traditions. Most dominant is the worship of Ubtao, who is considered to have created the jungle and everything in it. Another group, spirit-worshippers, may recognize Ubtao as the creator, but worship a plethora of spirits and elementals as active powers in the Realms. Jungle druids are concerned with the jungle itself, and do not take part in the argument between Ubtao-priests and spiritlords.

They're African based, yeah. The trouble with that, is that Ubato has no power outside of Chult -- Ubato is also a totem and spirit god. They could still worship spirits alone though.

Actually, I made a 'spirit shaman' once. I personally went with Grumbar. Build was a bard/Druid/shifter. (Bard for the perform and sleight of hand checks required for rituals. Used pickpocket as the stand in and merely added 50 to any rolls to reflect the Amian mechanic of "-50 to the pickpocket skill." I then went to Undead Shape to use the 'spirit' form as well as gaining construct form and limiting myself to only the stone one.)

I am asking primarily because the main character I play is having a crisis of self. I've always loved the totem/spirit guide type mysticism, and I was hoping after a fairly log period of trying to discover himself, this path would ultimately become known to him. This would be a fairly long role play process, since he's currently no where near far enough along any spiritual path to do a self re-roll in my opinion.

The standard nature deities and other elemental gods don't quite feel right for this type of character, at least in my opinion, although I don't know if worship of nature and ancestor spirits are something that would be allowed as a divine or arcane source of power. Bard actually sounds pretty interesting, as I can see Bard Song being equivalent to some sort of ritual chanting. Barring that, I would guess Druid or Cleric and possibly Sorcerer would be the most acceptable class choices.

The road ahead is long though, and anything could happen. I was just curious if this would even be possible given world lore, if things go a certain way.

Comments are appreciated.

You can request using Druid or Cleric or even Wizard or Sorcerer as a representation of the Shaman class. Bard to represent a Shaman seems like a really really odd fit, to me.

As a Shaman, spirits or totems and other such things are said to give the person his/her powers. They bargain with these natural sources of power that are very real in the FR world to gain their powers. In FR, a lot of these spirits are controlled by actual Gods, though that's not something a PC would necessarily know. Nor does that necessarily mean that the Shaman of a given spirit dominated by a certain God has to obey that God's dogma outright.

Bard is useful for Perform checks on the RP end of things.

I'd think Bard would be a great choice, actually, if RP'd right. The spirits would be drawn to such a character, and be inspired to do his bidding, because of his force of personality and personal magnetism. Instead of stereotypical "bardsong," the shaman would use chant and ghost dance and such. This could be amazingly awesome.

Actually, the best example I've seen in game that might support the Bard idea are the Blood Moon Orc Mystics. They seem to be Bards of some fashion, and I doubt that they are singing a merry tune when they do their bard song.

Actually Bards as Shamans kind of make sense. Shaman were often lore keepers, healers and advisers, as well as religious leaders of ceremony. I would imagine that the Shaman would often have to be rather well rounded. Of course, there isn't any actual magic so perhaps they had to do this just to keep up appearances, but hey, this is a fantasy setting were in!

Just an observation.

I'd personally say druid or cleric, just because a shaman without any definent divine element just seems more like a skald. Keeper of old stories, inspirational, but not necessarily wise or spiritually-minded as I'd expect a shaman to be. You don't have to be a bard to chant encouragement. That's what prayers and certain spells are there to represent.

I found there is a FR wiki, which I believe is updated for 4th edition, but as far as lore goes I would think that things would still be similar to the 3.5 game. It does a good job of trying to describe what I am looking for, which apparently does exists in FR.

"Shamans gain their power through alliances with these powers of the "spirit world" and act as intermediaries between them and the corporeal inhabitants of the visible world. In this manner, shamans can be compared to clerics, who similarly serve as agents of the gods. The analogy is not perfect however and the relationship between shaman and spirit is less one of worship and service to a greater power than one of mutual benefit and bargaining, similar in some ways to the pacts formed by warlocks, though generally with fewer of the moral complications. However, shamans do feel beholden to the spirits they work with and generally associate themselves with spirits that share similar goals and methods, whether those be malevolent or benign in nature. Most shamans, for their part, feel no particular pull to the forces of good, evil, law, or chaos, sharing this indifference with druids. However, shamans are not beholden to such neutrality in the way druids are and their constant interactions with civilization makes them more open to moral extremes druids would find abhorrent.[2]"

After reading the entire article, I would have to say Druid is probably the closest representation to this, although Cleric would probably be passable as well. The whole article can be found here for anyone interested: http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Shaman

The real question is, would it be feasible for a character to come into this way of life later in their lives? I guess when and if I decided to submit for a self rebuild, I'll find out!

Ouch I am afraid the wiki in many senses is completely worthless, the lore changed dramatically from 3.5 to 4.0. The world litteraly blew up and a lot of gods died. You need to crossreference everything you find there with 3.5 sourcematerial.

The wiki might actually be a 3.5 source book. After doing more digging, I found out the Spirit Shaman was in the Complete Divine. Its not the exact same description, but it's close. Here an an excerpt from the class:

"SPIRIT SHAMAN
Master of the spirit world, the spirit shaman follows a different
divine tradition than the cleric or the druid. Her world
is fi lled with powerful, living spirits, some helpful and some
malign. By bargaining with these spirits, the spirit shaman
gains power over the natural world and mighty divine magic
with which to aid her comrades or smite her enemies.
Adventures: Spirit shamans exist to mediate between
the human world and the spirit world and make sure that
humans (and dwarves, elves, orcs, and all other humanoid
races, of course) respect the spirits as is only right and
proper. Spirit shamans adventure to advance the causes of
whichever spirits they favor. Those who venerate helpful
spirits seek to assist people deserving of the spirits’ protection.
Those who revere dark and vengeful spirits promote
the chaos and suffering in which their patrons delight.
Through their actions, spirit shamans prove the power of
their patron spirits and earn prestige and status in the spirit
world.

Characteristics:
Spirit shamans cast divine spells much
the same way druids do, though they get their spells from
powerful spirits of nature. Their spells, like the druid’s, are
oriented toward nature and animals. In addition to spells,
spirit shamans gain an increasing array of spirit powers as
they advance in level.

Alignment:
Spirit shamans, in keeping with the indifference
of the spirits, tend toward some measure of dispassion.
Unlike druids, they are more tribal than solitary, and
involve themselves in the affairs of their fellows. Most spirit
shamans are neutral on at least one alignment axis, but it is
not uncommon to fi nd a spirit shaman who has become so
caught up in the affairs of the living that she has lost her
distance from human concerns.

Religion:
A spirit shaman reveres the essence of religion
more than the practice. She gains her magical powers from
the spirits that inhabit all things, living and dead, animate
and inanimate. She combines ancestral worship with animal
and nature worship. The typical spirit shaman, like a druid,
pursues a mystic spirituality of transcendent union with
nature rather than devoting herself to a divine entity. Still,
some spirit shamans give honor to deities of nature such as
either Obad-Hai (god of nature) or Ehlonna (goddess of the
woodlands)."

Looking at how their spell casting worked, it is the Druid spell list but actually uses the Sorcerer style despite being Divine magic that is, they have more spells per day but known fewer spells that do not have to be prepared. Other than that they get a spirit guide and some powers to let them basically communicate and influence spirit entities.

Also they have a definition of what a Spirit is:

"WHAT IS A SPIRIT?
Several of the spirit shaman’s abilities affect spirits. For purposes
of the spirit shaman’s ability, a “spirit” includes any of
the following creatures:
• All incorporeal undead
• All fey
• All elementals
• Creatures in astral form or with astral bodies (but not a
creature physically present on the Astral Plane)
• All creatures of the spirit subtype (see Oriental Adventures)
• Spirit folk and telthors (see Unapproachable East)
• Spirit creatures created by spells such as dream sight or wood
wose (see Chapter 7).
In the spirit shaman’s worldview, elementals and fey are simply
spirits of nature, and incorporeal undead are the spirits of the
dead."

Well if you're gonna use anything to do it, cleric seems like the way to go. Otherwise, you're looking at a special request to get druid to emulate a class that actively associates with undead.

I concur. The only thing that was a sticking point was the animal companion, which seemed like a good totem animal representation, but overall Cleric I think wins out. Thanks to everyone who has had input on this subject.

Opinion seems to differ widely on what class is the most appropriate for what I'm looking for. I have feeling I'm going to remain confused on this issue for some time. :?

I wasn't offering an opinion. I was stating a fact. The 3.5 class "Spirit Shaman" is a spontaneous caster with spells chosen from the Druid spell list, much like how Favored Soul draws from Cleric and Sorceror draws from Wizard. It's class features have to do with "Spirits", which are defined by the book, and you have yourself listed above.

I didn't mention anything regarding your character. That said: I think your character is best represented by a Druid, and luckily FR has things that cover "spirits of the dead" vs actual undead so there's no problem there.

A Spirit Shaman is not "really just a spontaneous casting druid", since the majority of its other abilities are in fact different than a Druids. If you had said the Spirit Shaman was like a Spontaneous casting Druid, except it uses Wisdom for available spell level and Charisma for spell DC, then I would have simply taken that as a fact. As is, I've only been asking for opinion on what is closest to representing the Spirit Shaman, given that one does not actually exists in nwn, so I've been taking every comment as an opinion. I do appreciate the opinion on the matter though.

... as I said. Druid. Because it literally gets all of its spells from the druid spell list, and that is the most important emulation in NWN.

The rest of your post is petty nitpicking and semantics.

The facts typically are.

I obviously can't close this thread, but I don't think it's going to go anywhere constructive at this point, so I'll leave it to others to change the subject.

Hey.. I know some things Mister Pally. I know that they are more haughty then sun elves, I know that their house was obliterated. They're a mix of devil and sun elf. I'm just wanting to know -more- :P

I'd love to read more up on them, but I'm afraid to use the forgottenrealms.wikia.com site :3

As an overview, they're the result of when a particular Sun elven house bred with demons to increase the strength of their bloodline. This was something considered so horrible by the otherwise "noble", proud sun elves that they were eventually hunted down. In addition, they are usually not talked about out of shame by the culture, just like the Crown Wars.

http://deepingdale.wikia.com/wiki/Fey'ri

That has some good general info, included traits:

Quote:
fiery red eyes
fine scales all over the skin
long pointed tails
batlike ears
deep red skin

In reality, general Tiefling traits. But I would recommend doing a lot of research yourself before deciding to play a Fey'ri in particular, instead of a tielfing elf or simply an elf with an affinity for demons.

I wounder how it works to lie about faith. If an evil person who follows an evil diety would pretend to serve a good God to infiltrate or get informations from the followers of that God. Is it doabel or will the fact that the gods are so present in the world make this imposible?
