Post subject:  Spell Resistance - SR

Hey, ok so I have a general gist of the idea, but how does Spell Resistance actually work?

Let's say for example that I have a level 27 wizard with epic penetration.
And there is a level 28 Drow.

How would it go down?

Ok so in this case it's;
33+1d20 vs 39 SR?

Also, if the roll = the defender's SR, does the spell work or fail?

Can't answer that, but you can throw a mordenkainen's disjunction which lowers the SR of every creature by 10 for 10 rounds.

Your maths seems somewhat right to me, not sure about the equal thing though. My guess would be that it would be resisted, as per other saving rolls.

Post subject:

I'll assume that equal makes the spell fail, and then maybe I'll be pleasantly suprised later. :D

Ok, so now the question is, is Drow SR the same as Monk SR, as in Mord's won't work on it?

Mord works on Drow.

Alright, so scenario above-

33+1d20 vs 39 SR (-10 if Mord)

= 70% success rate, 100% if Mord? (And +5% to that if the equal turns out to be right)

If they're equal it should win against SR. Much in the same way as AC.

Monk SR cannot be reduced by mordy or breach.

However, drow SR is still highly annoying.

In my opinion it should be

SR vs CL + Pen + Spell level + 1d10 +1

SR having the same chance to resist a level 9 spell as a level 1 spell is absurd.

Take away the SR, give back a Level. I'd be happy with that personally.

I personally am Happy with my SR.

The highest caster level for the purpose of defeating spell resistance is 36 with the epic spell penetration feat. The highest spell resistance is 41 (racial), 42 (spell) and 52 (monk with improved spell resistance VI).

I suck at math, but I think that requires d20 rolls of:

36 + 5 to beat 41 (75% success chance)
36 + 6 to beat 42 (70% success chance)
36 + 16 to beat 52 (20% success chance)

I think it works pretty well as it is though. I'm an Epic Wizard and only 3/4 spells will get a Drow? It makes them scary. If the first or second spell fails, they have more than enough time to either escape or kill you.

Then again, I totally understand your point. Level 1 spells and level 9 spells should probably be resisted differently.

Edit - Just saw you put in 1d10. Actually that works really well.

Racial SR is only on +2 ecl races methinks so the max is actually 39 so success is 85% with epic spell pen and no mords. Mord's makes it 100% success without needing any spell pen feats for a max level caster. A bit less scary then ain't they?

On monks you are screwed so at least you still have something to worry about.

Yeah true. For anyone that multi-classes though, they're a little more scary. Pure-mages should be fine.

No idea why mord's takes off SR anyway. Considering its a racial ability, like a dragons TS, it shouldn't be able to be removed. Though that is likely game restrictions, which then suggests that using Mord's on Drow to lower SR is abuse of the engine.

Correct me if I'm wrong, thats what it sounds like.

I think it's because it's magic. Lowering SR is just what Mordy'n'Breach do.

It's easier to argue that Monk SR *should* be lowered by Mord and that every ISR build is an exploit. An argument that also fails, because it's Ki and Ki > Magic > Logic.

Look at it this way.. creatures have SR most commonly when they're from the Underdark or from another exotic place that doesn't exactly play by the rules of the Prime Material. Drow and Svirfs, for example. They both gain their hardiness against spells from the environment of the Underdark, or the "radiation" there as someone called it. Why shouldn't a spell be able to temporarily weaken that?

On the other hand, a Monk's hardiness against all spell effects is innate. I figure that their SR comes from their control over their bodies extending beyond the physical reality. When someone tries to manipulate a Monk's body on a different plane of reality, as I assume the Weave to be, they find out that this solidity extends into the plane of magical cause and effect, as well... whereas ordinary beings, by what measure they may protect themselves against spells, are still soft as jelly pudding on the Weave's playground.

As I said, I figure. It could be all bullsh*t.

The Faerz'ress and its elements and influence were retconned in 3e. I'm sure Iron will comment shortly.

I always thought it was lame because it didn't imply so much that the Drow were cursed by Corellon as an entire race of XMen.

It just donned on me to ask, but it's always been in the back of my mind.

Does anyone know what "spell resistance" looks like IC? I mean, when a mage throws a fireball at a drow/etc, does the drow just stand there, like the spell wasnt even thrown, or is just able to shrug off any and all maladies of the spell?

Author:  FA_Frey_XC [ Sun, Jan 25 2009, 4:39 AM ]
Post subject:

I'd say it'd probably just fizzle on the target.

I.E. the fireball gets thrown, and the drow ducks, obviously hoping for the best, it impacts, and simply doesn't affect him.

Although I had a DM who loved to still roll combust against stuff ON the drow that wasn't SR.

;)

"Congrats, you save vs effects of the spell. The fireball explodes around you, and catches your clothes on fire. Roll damage plz KTHXBAI*

Same logic as superheroes who can turn invisible and teleport: everything you're wearing and carrying gets it too.

"Logic" Tee hee.

I always imagined it to be an 'aura' where the magic doesn't permeate, so anything you hold is within said aura ... the magic just envelops around it.
