Disable Intro Movies. This is a biggy.
Turn off User Access Control.
To Turn off UAC, do the following.
Go to Control Panel
Double Click User Accounts
Click Turn User Access Control on and off (Aka, Nazi Windows)
And you bloody well untick that nasty box.

I get customers in to Best Buy every day asking if they can buy a computer without Vista. I tell them only if they want an Apple.
They never do.
Hell I don't even work in the computer department and I still get asked for XP daily.
It's tragic that we live in a world where Windows XP has come to be seen as a savior from buggy crapiness.

I did none of this and NWN runs smoothly on my Vista. >.> All I have to put up with daily is clicking "Continue" because I run NWN as Administrator with UAC still on, which I barely even notice anymore.

Same thing as ragi, the hitting continue is about the only annoying thing I have had with vista. I turned the videos off once I learned how too, it is alot better IMO without those silly start up viedos.
I didn't even do that. But I have heard that it works.
Edit: To clarify, All I have done to make my Vista experience more NWN-friendly is set it to Run as Administrator, though the fact that I run only in Windowed Mode may have something to do with that.

UAC is more than "that annoying prompt" so disabling it is basically asking for a more vulnerable system, especially if it has more than one user. And it causes absolutely zilch issues with NWN.

Look you lot, he asked how to get NWN working in Vista. I don't see any of you coming up with any decent idea's, except Gal. So trap shut ha? I'm simply telling him what I did to get it working. The fact is, mine works without it even being installed properly and on a x64 system. So if the fixes worked for me to get it working under strenious circumstances I have it running, and without a problem may I add, then they may help him.
As for UAC. Yes, you are a small bit more vaunrable, but no more so then if you had XP. Produce proof Jan, because I've had UAC cause major problems with programs in the past, once I turned it off, purred like a kitten.
I've gone out of my way and tracked down an alternative method to the UAC issue that doesn't disable Vista secruity. It simply says yes to all prompts.
Quote:
Click Start and Control Panel. Switch to Classic View (if you haven't already) and click on the Administration Tools icon. In the list that opens click on Local Security Policy, and in the next window, Local Policies (a tiny bit redundant, but all UIs can't be perfect -- If UAC is running you'll get a UAC pop-up somewhere in here). In the Local Policies list click Security Options, and scroll down to "User Account Control: Behavior" (the full title of the policy is "User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators in Admin Approval Mode" but the window barely opens that far). Double-click the title and in the dialog box change its setting from "Prompt for Consent" to "Elevate without prompting." Click OK and the urge to tear your hair and scream at your PC will be greatly diminished in the future.

If you just got a new system which is why you have Vista try this...
Make sure your motherboard is 100% compatable with your CPU.
This is why NWN vs Vista did these things to me it had nothing to do with Vista in the end, once i got a compatable Moutherboard all my issues went away..
*crys* until the day my hardrive decided to delete the operating system for no good reason *end cry*
allright what i did now was disabled intro videos and set nwnmain to XP sp2 compatibility mode... i should notice change tonight when i get online. hopefully some of the issues are gone. thanks to everyone

You running a Nvidia card or graphics chipset?
If so update your drivers, if you have a newer pc, there was a problem with the 1.67-1.72 drivers that were causing it.
Also. If you just got vista and are having issues with it, you need to update your direct-x.
Vista by default doesn't ship with fully updated support for direct-x 9 or below. You need to update it using the web-updater that is available from that link, and do so on a usual basis. They usually release a new update every month or two or three.

Hmm running Vista 32-bit with a nVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS. It's driver version is 179.14, and I'm running DirectX 10

Make a new shortcut from nwn.exe. Stick on the desktop or the start menu, works then. Think it's because NWN tries to put registry entries in Vista that Vista doesn't like.
It's only because NWN is such an old computer game, and Vista doesn't work well with old games. Can't say where the blame lies honestly. Microsofts fault for not adding the extra junk to make it compatiable, or Biowares fault for not keeping there software compatiable with new O.S.
You decide.

Happened only with some fairly recent Vista update, though. It wasn't always like that, not for me at least. Very annoying, because I need desktop shortcuts for Amia A, Amia B, Amia A DMC, Amia B DMC, and just regular DMC. >_>

Obviously, but NWN is not one of them. If you really want the effect of disabling UAC, right-click your NWN folder, Properties, uncheck "Read-only", that'll not affect the rest of your system.
Alternatively you may right-click nwmain.exe, Properties, Compatibility tab, check "Run this program as an administrator"
As best I know, I don't have NWN running on Vista in 32bit, but just whatever it defualted to when I re-installed it.
My routine consists of having to:
1) Right click: Run As Administrator
2) Allow Program
3) Run NWN
4) [Movies begin] Hit "Windows" key [to see desktop] and left-click to select the NWN program off my Taskbar. //This is where I glitch-crash NWN the most, as if I click before doing this, the game shuts down from my mouse reading as clicking on the desktop, and not the game to bypass the movie//
5) Freesailing after that!
6) I do have most of my graphics turned down; namely No Water Effect. Highest lag-point for whatever forsaken reason.

Using "Run As Administrator" does wonders, otherwise I'd never be able to get NWN to boot. And this is off my desktop shortcut the game installs.

Generally speaking, any computer with Windows should be subjected to an excorsism atleast every 6 months to keep the evil microsoft poltergeists in check.
other than that.. i guess i should buy more holy water and stakes.
if you've nvidia drivers, try messing with the control panel for nwmain.exe's settings and turn on opengl specification for clamp.
also turn off bump mapping, it likes to crash things with reflective images, like silver dragons or shiny armor.

Okay, here's the funny thing. I didn't edit anything and I run Vista 32bit. It runs perfectly, no bugs, no crashing. I wonder, what are your computer specifics? You're RAM, Processor etc.

Its an ASUS N50VC. I can't tell you what everything is, because I'm not sure beyond what I said in my previous posts.

Windows 7 will be out in roughly 5 months.
Vista did have direct X support for pre-DX10 games, but it's virtualized for anything below DX9.
Dwagin's suggestion to download the DX10 updates also installs the SDK for all versions of DX prior, including monthly / bi monthly binary updates.

If you download a ISO of the source for the OS, and have a legit key (Vista or XP, but must be the same bit flavor, IE. You can't use a 32 bit Vista key for 64 bit XP last I checked) you are not pirating anything.

1, Inserted and booted from the vista dvd
2, Fromatted and installed
3, Installed all latest drivers and updates
4, Installed nwn
5, Set admin rights and xp sp 2 compability
6, Played
So far I havent had a single bluescreen/unexplained crash and the only program I havent gotten to run is the ones I made myself in visual studio 6.0. Then again visual studio 6.0 is from the stoneage and running visual studio 2008 works flawlessly on vista with some admin rights.
Infact my computer is way better then it was with XP.
Most of the vista crashing is caused by companies pre-installed bloatware such as ACER CONTROL. And thats why you build yourself, its cheeper and works way batter since you know yourself what you got in your system from the start.

Interestingly enough, I have done the same, Terra, and NWN was so jerky and the animation wasn't very clean.
Windows XP FTW.
*shrugs*

Get the webupdater, vista doesn't ship with full backwards compatibility with directx pre-9.0c

Thanks tho... and btw Dwagi... Microsoft told me different.

Not running =Run it as administrator.
The startup crash = Alt + Tab and select neverwinter.
(Where you click to get rid of the atari logo and it crashes)
Crashes because it re-selects the autorun for some mad reason when you click start game.
