| Post subject: | Epic Traps? |
From what I hear, epic traps are only aviable through recovery, which does severely reduce the usefullness of the set-trap skill of any character except a high level rogue. i was wondering, is it possible to make them more aviable? Sure, they can be powerfull, but a char would need about 45 in total skill modifier to be able to set one, and few classes do get the skill as class skill. Or is there a reason I have overlooked in my naivity that is behind the lack of epic traps? |

Just add bonuses to Set Trap using mythals. I know loads of characters that use/recover the epic traps found in tough places. It's far from useless. |

Or is there a reason I have overlooked in my naivity that is behind the lack of epic traps? And take away yet another perk from those who dedicate to their rogue class? I hope not. |

I mean, if there are enough high level rogues who will sell off their hard earned recovered epic traps, i dont mind. But when I make a ranger with many skills and horribly few skillpoints, I want to know wether putting them into the set trap skill will be of any use at all |

Mythalling is your friend. You can go from novice to semi-professional in an instant with the right gear. Also try shopping around. There's plenty of useful gear out there. |

Alternatively, your welcome to go to things to change and add your thoughts on strengthening the weaker traps. So that rogues can craft there own traps that are effective. I'll even be so kind as to bump the topic for you. |

Well sure, if the weaker traps were made more usefull it would help alot, but im unsure if that is doable and/or wanted. I wouldnt mind if rogues themselves, or any char with high craft trap skill could craft epic traps, or stromnger versions of existing traps. When you reach the level when you can set deadly traps, they are usually not of much use anyway, especially when it comes to the tangle trap |

The tangle trap is my favourite of all! Especially in mass. |

I'll readily admit I dont have much experince playing characters that set traps, but from what little i ahve done, it is my impression that traps arent really usefull until you can use the epic versions. If anyone have tips on how to use the aviable traps effectively, i would be very happy to hear them |

Crafting epic traps is not doable, Custom traps not possible. Increasing the balance for traps is the only option left. In things to change is a topic on the damage and dc's of traps. If you can think of a viable dc for each trap they may be implemented. If those traps trigger but are still too weak, then increased damage can also be scripted. |

I highly recommend making them from scratch. They're much cheaper that way and you you can make a lot to use at will. They're a great addition to use to increase role play in an adventure. But unfortunately you get some players who just don't want to know and would rather just run through dungeon to dungeon on an xp hoard. Also, if your character is quite weak and alone but want to snare a few trolls or something, It's good to set up a trap area before going up to the next span, then go ahead and run to lure them to your trap network. If you were to trap when in combat or right next to a spawn in stealth or invisibility, you will lose your stealth and/or invisibility. Also you will be prone to epic failures unless you have that neat rogue skill feat that makes you auto- take-20 in combat when setting traps. Setting traps away from spawns prevents epic failure. |

Oh well, will have to wait until I make a rogue with the whole set trap character then. Not nearly enough skill points to do that as a Ranger. Thanks for the answers though. |

You can build a ranger around trapping and relying on spell-casting to boost stealthiness. I rarely see enough rangers that use traps. I've seen a few, though. I know Belladonna picks up traps, though I'm not sure if she uses them so well. You'd think trapping would fit more nicely with the ranger class, but their lack of skill-points tend to make many players decide that more combat or stealth oriented skills are more of a priority. |

I did agonise a long while over wether or not to take the Use Trap skill, but in the end I never put a single point into it. Though it was largely for IC reasons, you Belladonna has an extensive background story which sits in a journal beside me when I am playing, some of that I am -slowly- posting up as I can get around to it. Anyways in the end I decided that Bella would rather hunt prey or lie in wait for it patiently than she would set traps for it. That having been said I do regret not having taken at least one point in the Set Trap Skill because as Sephira said you can mythal up some nifty items and be quite good at it even without spending a lot of points in it. So stick one in there at least or you may regret it later on, like me. |

elithiel has killed plenty of people with epic traps/lots of deadly ones. They're well worth the skill pts spent for it. Anyone who tells you different is either a HIPS spamming SD or doesn't play a corner sneaker. There's not many abilities out there that lets you do 200+ damage in a single hit...as with some of the right traps. |
