A group like this already exists. You could join them.

Or, if your real interest in this is being in charge of these people, being the head honcho, the big cheese, the man with the plan, etc., you can continue on.

well i dont want to be the leader thats for sure. Also joining a existing group is not what i want.i'm sure there are others thats why i asked here to see how people react about this. perhaps there are to many already.

This is quite true, from my perspective. Amia has a huge number of "mercenary" groups, or really groups in general that are basically identical to each other except for minor ideological differences. It's something that divides the playerbase quite a bit. Instead of having these large factions that are capable of changing the world (something players have wanted for a long time), you end up with a bunch of small groups that can't really do anything, because they lack the influence to do so.

I mean no offense, but how long have you been playing on Amia? I assume you are rather new based on your forum account date. It is probably better to have a look around first, make yourself some name and fame, and proceed from that. I honestly can't remember any decent faction that started from a forum post, they start and grow in game.

I know of one or two that started as forums post's, they evolved over time into something bigger :D

look into HoA

or the smaller In Eisnard's Service might be a good match as well (i think i spelt that name wrong)

I am kind of out of the loop in non-drow matters right now though.

Aye! Games are fun!....

No but yeah, there are quiet a few mercenary groups already. Most evil and some neutral groups have people within their ranks who do mercenary work on the side.

bandits - rob people through rp, don't sprint up to them and dev crit them when u have it, stop them on the road or something and demand money. an old bandit idea i was with like a few years back to present time there was the red robbers (there were around 5-7 of us, and we waited on the roads). we all wore red and literally kicked the shit outa people. b liek teh -blue buccaneers- er something, just prepare for a load of insults and childish jokes at you though, cuz that is the cordorian concept of fear. oh, disguises don't work, so, and you can't use invisibility to sneak into Cordor without DM permission... be sure u really know what ur doing. i also use to solo-rob people in the inn rooms, but nothing like that will work cuz the door speaks to you letting you know someone is inside. you can go ahead and even offer your services to the highest bidder to rob somethin', y'know?

character concepts for bandit/mercenary
- humans around the ages of 26-38 (there are enough 18 year olds on the server IMO). elves aren't likely to stoop so low.
classes
- 1 fighter (leader, charismatic, not a butt-ugly brute like most fighters that no one wants to follow. DEFINITELY NOT A BLACKGUARD OR BARBARIAN OR RANGER)

- 1 rogue (charming as well as the fighter, sly, accented talking to disguise his real voice, always on top of the game, and the one that attacks the things from hiding places. DEFINITELY NOT A SHADOW DANCER OR ASSASSIN)

- 1 wizard (not necessarily an 18 int char. probably a 15 [not a 16, it is 15 int] or something wizard that uses magic devices and scrolls not relying on normal spell casting, but equipment. languages are not infernal, drow, abyssal, illithid, or any of that rare talk, but probably like common, elven, and dwarven or something. WIZARD, NOT SORCERER DRUID OR ANYTHING ELSE, WIZARD! HOORAY!)

---
THE MORE DEFECTS TO THE CHARACTER YOU ADD, THE MORE MEMORABLE IT IS, AND THE MORE RECOGNIZABLE. :)

Don't overdo the defects though, keep it to specific scar marks with descriptions and such, no wizard with no hands, lol.

---
umm, the bad thing about a mercenary is the fact that people are filthy rich and there is always someone else willing to fight for free because the reward they want is XP and levels, so would you be charging for services? nope, unless u got a good RPer willing to pay. if this ain't what ya wanted, meh, at least i saved ya the trouble.

You'll have pvp problems though, cuz there are plenty of pride-gamers running around. PVP is always a last resort, and you will lose lots of times, it happens to everyone, dont give up though

oh, and dont talk IC like i am in this post. y'know, all lower case, its bad rp
---
oh, and i hope this helps, man. any questions send a pm, or talk ta me IG. im always willin' ta kick up the RP skill on the server for anyone that needs it.
---
and if ya need an extra man on ur team, hook me up. //Amia is missing a group of bandits. they literally don't exist even with all the rogues running around.

Dwarven is -extremely- reclusive, and taught to others outside the dwarven race even rare than drow is.

Other than that, Moridan's basis of a "bandit" group is actually pretty good. Too bad no fighters or wizards actually partake in Bandit RP, I've tried several times on my alts. =[ The only wizards I ever see are Necro's, the only fighters are usually Banites.

The problem with moridan's idea is that people would rather die then give over a single coin. I am not lying really, go on the roads and demand a toll for one coin, and most likely you will have people fighting you instead of giving you the money.

i absolutely agree

:P

i guess pridegaming RPers get in the way of realism or whatever ya wanna call it *sigh*

@wolfking ... Umm, I'm watching someone right now IG offering to teach them abyssal. I LOL at this :P never can tell, eh? i think dwarven is a step down from abyssal if ya know what i mean.

There we go.

On Amia, most players have an ego the size of Mount Everest. Giving up a small amount of gold, or an irrelevant item to someone who's put up a road block, would be like accepting defeat... to them. Even if it furthers RP.

Instead, they seek to extend their ego by trying to PK the RP'ing robber in the most humiliating fashion possible.

We tried a couple of sparsely layed out roadblocks in the Skull Crags, with the Banites. Was good RP. But even the characters with 5-9 levels, standing against several well known high level ones, would refuse to pay 50 gold (even if they -only- had to RP giving the money, aka, they weren't asked to give us the actual gp), and instead attack us due to their pride.

Roadblocks doesn't work on Amia, unfortunally.

Regardless. Ask any dwarf ICly if you can learn dwarven from then, Hunar or Hunie (I forget, major dwarf player, may have left) would go BALLISTIC for you even asking, along with most other dwarves.

Besides, you've seen how many tieflings we have. Abyssal is a lot easier to come across someone willing to teach, rather than dwarven. Given that Cordor has like 1-3 dwarves who play regularly that are binded to Cordor.

At the end of the day though, skull crags was amazing fun. Even when hordes of mobs came to protect the innocent. Just be prepared and lay down ooc ground rules for the rp such as, on defeat you never come back this way(to high levels not using the area to hunt).

If you're into evil orcs, killing surface elves and RPing with the underdark races, the Dark Horde's looking out for you. Problem is the majority of my faction potentials don't have amia forum access, only a select 3 or so do.

But Mago is right... road blocks don't really work. It wouldn't matter if you're evil or good either. If the defenders started taxing people going north of Minmir, they'd get the same "pike off" reaction.

Well, actually, they do...because, the victim ends up dying in their foolish pride. You can then still RP rob them IC off their corpse.

The real problem is the abusive ooc tells one gets afterwards from the lowbie PC who refused to give up that 1gp and instead proceeds to attack your epic knight of dhoom....its just no fun after having killed them to have to get the swath of hellish abuse in tells afterwards. Sure you can screen shot it and send to DMs, but...at the end of the day...roadblocks, along with assassination attempts, just add to your own misery, not enjoyment due to this single fact.

Sure. Roadblocks work... if your intention is to start a shitload of PvP. That's pretty much only what they work for.

Because, not only will the lowbies start off with attacking you. After they've died, they'll have gone to Cordor (most likely) and proclaimed that they've been horribly abused, where as... the "neutral" majority of characters on Amia, suddenly goes goody-goody and gather up in a group of 14 epics, heading towards your roadblock, just to PvP you as vengeance.

Awesome... not.

So, if you don't want them to attack you and you don't want the conflict to escalate by them trying to engage others ...you actually just want to steal 50 gp off a lowbie? *Scratches head.*

holy jesus man! ur fuckin' amazing! u got the whole system down!

its just too bad that the 'neutral' players don't actually care. dunno why (maybe cuz they need action.. which is lame cuz they don't care about their alignment)... its unforuntate they don't all get to look at ur post and fix their characters.

actually kjetta, -no- one gives over the money. no one. They all want to be the heros and beat the big bad guys, even if they are given proper warning they would be harmed. Sure they might want to esculate the conflict, but is it fun if -everyone- wants to PvP you?

Nah. The attacks are to be expected.

It's just the way players tend to step out of their character, when being put into that specific situation. They often don't act accordingly to their characters, but rather out of their OOC pride and ego.

And, I doubt many would argue with me on this... the never ending spiral of revenge PvP isn't fun for anyone. Almost always ends with OOC grief.

When the 14 epics come to seek revenge, they die... but are eventually raised. 20 minutes later, half of those 14 return, with a couple of new ones. And it goes on, and on, and on, and on.

In the Skull Crags, we had players who kept coming back 5-6 times in less than an hour. Bringing new characters with them each time. That just makes the conflict -RP- you seek in having a roadblock tedious, since... it just ends up in PvP.

EDIT: Spelling and such.

I personally hold the opinion that if you die, you avoid the other person for the entire reset - if you accidentally bump into them, it just doesn't happen.
That's how I treat it ... I don't extend that courtesy to people who just come up and kill you with the bare minimum required RP though.

In my opinion, that's a good and mature way of responding to defeat in PvP.

The issue here is there are people who will not react as you would to this type of RP, and unfortunately assuming that because you would react this way means everyone should is a bit erroneous.

When you take any evil organization on Amia, and throw it out there, in the spotlight as well as throwing down a gauntlet, what do you think is going to happen?

The good guys are BORED IG, and any time of change / challenge is going to get their attention. If your not ready for that attention, and can't handle the inevitable "re-do", then it's possible your not really ready for the concept of open world PvP... because that's what your doing.

When any group pins animals up to tree trunks proclaiming a certain area is their own, they've publically consented to PvP. It's conflict PvP, sure, but the majority of evil characters are so evil that the good guys are not going to do anything except attack and subdue... or interogate and kill, depending on the faction.

Do you really think the Triadic Order is going to considerer trying to "turn" an individual like Darthion, for example, to the side of good? Of course not, they are going to treat him like the deadly threat he is.

My point here is don't assume that just because you would react to something in one way, that's how everyone will react. Playing an evil character, regardless, requires a level of maturity in regards to accepting the inevitable loss, because D&D was based on the premise that good guys win, bad guys loose.

I think the real problem is,

Epics are bored, that's probably why they're hanging out in Cordor.

A single evil faction makes some fun for them, suddenly, EVERY good and so called neutral faction wants to jump them in PvP (because they're bored). Single faction on faction conflict = fun.

Many factions versus One = victimisation.

Hah. Robbing people on the roads is so last year, just ask for road taxes to rebuild the streets from the heavy use of adventurers using them.

It does work on a few people, some will still run past, others will RP and everyone who is just the slightest bit lawful will pay them *snicker*

This makes me wish there were more well RP'ed paladins so one of my neutral evil characters can yell ' I give up!' just before she is smitten down, causing the paladin to fall! Mahaha.

But yes, the ego gets quite often into the way of people, I don't know why even, I mean, it is just a game. You are supposed to have fun, and where is the fun if you are invincible and untouchable and never loose?
No one can or will harm you, you get bored, and then you leave.
Was this really a good plan to begin with? I think not.

I also remember a post, loooong time a go in a forum far far away, where someone did that, with a rather low character. Back then was the 'See Challenge Rating' Still on. So they ambush someone and demand money, he at first is puzzled, checks their CR, and then beats them down, even though they are overpowering them with 5 to 1.

I can only assume they had mistaken you for epics waving the PvP stick at lowbies until they sat down, begged, rolled over and did tricks for them.

While I don't deny a lot of the satisfaction is OOC, I'm not sure there's any alignment that ICly dislikes the schadenfreude of seeing such people get the egos handed to them on a plate, with a side order of arse.

When the Flag was rampagey last year, the whole point was to incite that exact kind of PvP mayhem. We'd always be outnumbered and have to flee when the epics began rocking up in increasing numbers, but it was hellish fun. The best one was Pidgey mentioning, in passing, that a mad hin and a dodgy looking elf were walking towads the jail carrying explosives. Two hours of solid violence with 36 kills ensued. Happy, happy memories of Va hurtling around the South with half a dozen Devcritters thundering after him.

Unfortunately some true things about Amia pvp mentioned here. It's hard to play a bandit,i was thinking about a fanatical anti paladin/elves party perhaps? Like when the group is online, all the paladins on the server should watch their back. :D I'm not sure if this is a good ideea cause on Amia if you hate paladins,80% of the world hates you. :)

ur correct about the world hating people who hate paladins. I'm pretty sure some of the banites/demons would take you out rapidly should you cause any problems.

You have to level up to a high level cuz there is nothing else you can do to prepare for a high level slaughtering you.

Moridan, do you ever have anything to say regarding RP that isn't "Make a 'powerbuild' and level as fast as you can, because RP tstarts at 30"?

I found when I was playing my half devil, I collected more infernal contracts in the low teens than I did at high level by a loooong way.

So long as you are not the "Where are some babies? I'm hungry." kind of evil, you don't exactly need a powerbuild or be at level 30.

Wouldn't that'd be to say he ever has anything truly constructive to say?

Actually, you can't win at any level playing evil and in pvp.

As a lowbie, you get creamed by everyone just about or just purely outnumbered.

A mid-range, you get smited by bored epics.

As an epic, you get tell hell by anyone lower level than you for "supposed griefing", even if you've followed the rules to the letter.

Or if you pick on the same level people, chances are, they'll have sent tells to their mates and you'll have a 'random' party of their mates show up not long after you start the hostile verbal business.

The only way you can do this effectively, is to:

1. Outnumber them
2. Outgun them
3. Hope they're stupid enough NOT to take your way out
4. Hope they're stupid enough to start buffing or resting (this happens all too often!)
5. Engage, smite them fast and leave as fast as you can, before the bored epics start to roll in...in droves....

Very, very rarely will you get someone who:

a. doesn't whine and rolls with the situation
b. roleplays it out
c. plays by the rules
d. doesn't call the emergency dial a bunch of bored epics hotline
e. accepts IC consequences, etc...

Even rarer still is the utopic vision of an even steven's, similar level, similar class, 'arena' style fair fight.

Unforunately, people seem to think that PvP, unless done its all 100% equal, 100% fair, is legitimate roleplay.

To my senses, whilst that 'arena style conditions' situation is fun, isn't how it is nearly every PvP situation I've been in.

Tormak and WonWon, I'd be delighted to know another way of starting conflict RP without a guaranteed loss, or a guaranteed mob of neutral characters trying to kill you the second you do something remotely evil, such as picking someone's pocket, or calling someone a name (I've had people kill me for this).

I'd appreciate an answer that doesn't involve:

- DM help during conflict RP
- Being in a No-PVP zone
- Being non-violent
- Being level 30
- Having a group of level 30s

I'd honestly like to see some robbery from a lvl 10 or something.

If you want to know my true thoughts, I hate playing high levels. As a high level, it surely limits what my character can strive for, and it limits the boundaries of RP. Lower level makes it more fun because if your level 10, you don't have to RP - "saving the world another time in the persistent world" - you don't have to RP knowing every bit of information. I constantly see high levels spill secrets as if they mean nothing, and I'll say, its aggravating to see them say, "use the library, the answers to the world are in there." It gets old real fast to see people talk about Deities as if they aren't important, or to be simply surrounded by people you can't compete with while you are an epic level (20). When you reach an epic level, its suppose to mean something, however it doesn't really mean much when if your not epic, you can't actually have hostile RP conflicts without PVP/ instant death by dev critting level 30. I've had more than one person ask me before any PVP to check if I was a pale-master or not just to see if they could dev crit me... It gets that interesting where they -have- to win.

Bottom line - I don't think you should have to be an epic level to actually start up some conflict RP without consequence of insto-death or banishment.

I actually did this, and managed it, in Cordor East before I was ever a DM.

Except it was level 3. Fresh off the boat. At the end of the day the character got away with half of the money he 'robbed' and a few scars. But he got away.

Thing is, it required a bit of foresight, some OOCly appropriate and friendly communication (such as assuring people that they don't OOCly need to give me a thing and asking for consent from the 'hostage' I took), and of course... Skill

Watched / participated in two of those last night on my alt.

Muggings ftw. Kudos to those who were a part of it, by the way.

Why would the Banites / Demons care if there was some other group causing chaos?

I mean, there's already a couple groups who are painting a bullseye on their own head. The Banites / Demons don't need to do anything, you'll do it for them.

I remember one indecent that stands out for being random, was when I as my drow lolthlite in the past ran into a hin looking for a guide. my priestess was the guide and thus we went hunting together for a bit till we got near the big group of trogs, my drow betrayed the hin and took her as a captive and tortured and with the help of my matron also did some interrogation. What was key was the fact, that I had good planning from the beginning and I was OOCly friendly. this act of random evil, or ARE, was done at a low level, I was just starting out and yet I managed to do so it is possible to do evil acts at a low level.

I agree with you on this, and I would go so far as to say that, in the past, I've been guilty of paying the toll.

Yes, that's true. I admit it. Frey's paid the 20 gold and walked on. It actually makes sense, after I thought about it. I mean, seriously, what dude with a 40 Int is going to decide to not pay, when paying would be so much quicker and less trouble? If he pays, he's on his way, and there's no issue.

So there are =some= people that can do it. But I agree that the majority of good guys can't resist the temptation to prove how "good" they are at PvP by just clubbing the poor guy over the head.

Moridan_X wrote:

I'd agree, except that's not reality. The reality of the situation is, and I'm repeating what I said before:

The good guys are SO BORED that the minute there is a report of =anything=, BAM! we've a swarm of epics waiting to flex their might.

What it really takes is the PLAYERS to be generous, not the characters. Think of it as if those other character's players are sitting across from you, and they are your friends, whom you enjoy spending time with, etc. etc. Deal with them as such, and =everyone= will have a much better time.

Regards,
