Maybe let them respond instead of outing them on the forum? |

Chances are they already have. Things like this don't generally get posted publicly, it's why there's a PM box. |

I'm sorry, I must be blind and/or suddenly lost my brain and capability to comprehend, but who chewed out and who here? Did I miss some deleted posts, maybe? |

Hostility? Nothing I said was hostile in the least bit, all I did was suggest you afford the person who they're asking for a chance to answer via a PM. I know he tries to hide it ICly because I've seen it. Let him make the decision to answer public or through a PM, that's all. No need to get your feathers all ruffled. |

..of course he hides it ICly...this is oocly... Now that they know where to send the PM, it can be worked out...I didn't post right away after seeing this thread, I did wait awhile (16-17hrs from timestamps) and saw no activity, so I kindly added the info of who to to send a PM to. -- Cpt.Devistation PostPosted: Wed, Apr 22 2009, 21:14 PM Azrael PostPosted: Thu, Apr 23 2009, 14:01 PM -- "In the years before the establishment of the gay civil rights movement, very few people dared to reveal their homosexuality. Exposure could mean the loss of employment, friends, child custody, and social status, as well as the risk of physical assault. It meant becoming publicly despised. Consequently, much energy was expended by glbtq people to preserve the secrecy of their queerness. Outing is a term that refers to the public revelation of a person's sexuality without the consent of the person." ( http://www.glbtq.com/social-sciences/outing.html ) "4: the public disclosure of the covert homosexuality of a prominent person especially by homosexual activists" ( http://mw1.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/outing ) "Maybe let them respond instead of outing them on the forum?" says to me "Maybe let them respond instead of ratting them out on the forums as a banite faction leader'" That's the message I got from it.
Feathers, ruffled. |

And the message you got would be correct. That hardly indicates hostility, at all. If that offends you, that's your problem. If someone hides something ICly, a lot of times they also like to hide it OOCly. Who are you to decide for him? In any case, you've done it already and you're not going to undo it so I've nothing left to say here. |

Ok so the next time a person asks about finding a person oocly through a public forum I should in your opinion not tell them and do nothing, or bluntly tell them I'm not going to answer them. ...fine, hope they have seen the response by now. o0GuNz_N_RoSeZ0o wrote: In any case, you've done it already and you're not going to undo it so I've nothing left to say here.
Who are you to decide whether i un-do it or not? *deletes* |

Chill mates, you're overeacting here. It's nice you're helping out people Azrael, I haven't and I won't discredit you for doing the right thing. Sometimes you have to remember though that not all evil bastards really want to be publicly announced so it's better left for people to find out the hard way (ICly) and feel like they accomplished a personal goal for doing so. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and do what's right for the factions and the players in those factions over doing what's right in helping out the new guy. It is an RP server afterall. |

You could always try a PM? And I understand that you were trying to help Devistation, and not out the other person. |

Considering the banite forums are on public display and players can see oocly who posts in that forum but not the actual content, I think players within that faction are fairly well known to have banites. |

I meant with regards to I can see who last made a post in the forum, but not the content of which was posted. Which means if i was the metagaming type i could assume said players had a character in the faction, or if i wanted to know who to PM with regards to something banitey I could pm that person. |

Sitting on the forums reading who posted last is a bit different to publicly announcing the leader of the faction. |

Maybe I am misreading what is being said, but is it being implied that the church forum is private? |

I made the Banite forum visible in the list before I left. You can't browse the actual forum, but it does appear in the list, and as such, the last one to make a post shows in the forum list (like all other sub-forums). If the Banites want to be über-hidden, they can change it back to be completely hidden. |

It is visible on the forums, so you can see who the last person to post was, just like you can sit on the main page and watch who was the last to post in General Discussion. And as I said - there's a big difference between loitering on the forum and listing the names of every person who post there and publicly announcing the leader. |

The potential for metagaming is the only reason for this reaction, and knowing oocly the forum name for everyone with a character in a faction, and knowing who has a faction leader character oocly, Both have potential for metagamers to abuse. But I don't see how a potential for ass-hats to abuse ooc information should have an effect on the way we help people oocly, when trying to contact an ooc forum account. Taking ooc information ICly is clearly already against the rules. So someone breaks a rule...and somehow we're to blame for their actions because of ooc information they abused? |

Bearing in mind that with the reformation of the Zhentarim and Banite factions as one, not everyone you see posting on the forum IS a banite.. they may very well be a member of the Zhentarim... The Zhentarim aren't always Banites. |

Azrael wrote: ..and that 'big difference' would be?? I can sit here, deliberately listing down the name of everyone who posts. I would be deliberately metagaming, and still be no closer to knowing who leads the faction. If someone just posts up "Person X leads Faction Y", you are telling everybody who leads the faction, lending to a lot more accidental metagaming. EDIT: Jan wrote: Send him the name in a PM next time and everyone'll be happy.
