Which Deity would be a good choice for an Evil Bard?

Don't know why I never thought of Shar myself, I think I will go with her then, thanks to both suggestions! :D

Exactly.

And bards don't need specific deities because they're not divine spell casters. You can choose anyone. You can even worship Oghma or Finder and be evil. Just think about what kind of character your making. If he wants to rule over people by charming them to death with music or something, Bane. If he wants to shriek music to torture people, Loviatar. If he wants to ruin peoples lives by making bad things happen, Beshaba. Aaaand I think you get the point.

xDD Although Cher would make for a far more scary evil deity, imho.

And I think just about every last evil deity, can fit an evil bard.. they don't need gods to sing their songs and cast their magic, afterall... unless Mystra gets pissy at them.

Totally agree. I think she's the best fit to make a cool evil bard deity.

Any of you Bard fanatics able to give me any tips on how to RP one well? I'm not too good with things like poetry, or improvising songs, though obviously RP'ing the use of an instrument would also be an alternative.

Be scatterbrained, vain, and worried about your apearance. Carry around a small notebook and write down everything EVERYTHING people with you do.

You can always ask your friends for material if they're good at poetry and the like. Another options is, you can give poetry a shot and see if you can get good at it ;).

You don't really have to RP a bard as a performer. They fulfill many roles in the FR world. While most all of them do have some level of performing skill (singing, dancing, juggling, ventriloquism, etc.), many others focus on subjects such as studying history, instrument making, linguistics, acting as advisors to rulers and governments, martial and diplomatic strategists/negotiators, and a whole gamut of other things. One of the main things about bards is the wide range of their skills, which is what makes them suitable for a wide range of interests.

Oghma, obviously. Everybody should worship him.

Gargauth is pretty interesting too, if you want to be a political schemer.

But there's no reason an evil layman should worship an evil deity. I bet most evil people worship good and neutral deities, since people generally want to associate with gods who are benevolent or helpful. Unless you're nuts, you'd have little reason to rever the gods of tyranny, disease and torment.

I like this. I have a soft spot for villains who believe they're doing it for the 'greater good'.

Well, that smiting really is half-OOC. I would've asked Disco to remove it, but I guess I would be nitpicking too much. The guy's got to have his fun!

Gods won't smite you for being the "wrong" alignment. They probably wouldn't give you divine spells if you were opposed to their alignment, but they'd embrace any lay worshipers who increased their divine power points and possibly supported the mundane church.

And I'm not even talking about believing in the greater good, necessarily. I just mean, if you were a selfish, spoiled crook who wanted to enjoy a comfortable and lazy life with no regards for how you acquire that, why would Loviatar or Cyric appeal to you? You'd want wealth and appreciate Waukeen, you'd love good luck its goddess Tymora, you'd probably enjoy good food, wine, song and women and thus try to stay in Lliira and Sharess's good graces. Scholars, no matter how selfish and evil, would surely have a thing for Oghma and Deneir. And so on.

Those gods might not look favorably on your interpretation (or ignorance) of the finer moral points of their dogma, but you're a worshiper and that's what all gods want. Only if you were to encourage a spreading heresy among the faithful would they take a personal interest in your opinion, I reckon.

But of course, there are plenty of cool evil gods to choose from, too. it depends on what your character's goals are, and what's important to him.

I always wondered why on Amia the gods gave enough of a damn about your character to smite them, rather than get the silent ignorance that is reserved for everyone else.

There are a plethora of answers to your question, 2k8ste, but there was something that came to my mind in the very beginning.

There is a trend I don't much care for in Amia (maybe in FR in general) of each PC seeming to have an "assigned" deity and players struggling to much to be an embodiment of that deity.

I think a classic (but novel for Amia) approach to an evil bard is to play a normally polytheistic individual, the kind of person who praises Chauntea for a good meal, who reveres Oghma for the brilliant inspiration, who gives a nod to Lathander for being alive to see the Dawn after a night of debauchery. Who maybe secretly thanks Shar for opening up his heart to the reality that there is no ultimate meaning to life, and therefore no impetus to constrain himself with artificial notions of morality and ethics.

You potentially please a lot of PCs who are more "dedicated" to one god by praising their chosen deity and claiming to give them reverence as necessary. Whether you genuinely mean it or not.

As far I as I have noticed the monothestic trend have really been present on amia for a long long time. And well I think there is a very obvious reason for it. Polytheistic religions are incredibly rare in modern society and I dare make the general assumption that most players on Amia are from the western culture. I can't think of any western cultures that does not have a firm monothestic rooting.

This naturally is carried on ingame, I think it is very hard for many to fully grasp and live their characters by the ideal that you can easily pay homage to a wide selection of deities. I know I often do it myself having close to monothestic devotion towards a certain faith in one of my characters. I think it simply falls natural that when "following" a faith you follow it in the classic monothestic sense, meaning full devotion and neglecting others.

Though I am fairly sure that the realms is indeed not a monotheistic society. From what I read in Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting I understood that most people pay homage to the different deities as it is obvious. Eg leave a offering in Tymora's shrine for luck, pray to Talona she doesn't strike your dear ones with sickness. Patron deities mostly reflect the path taken by a paticular person. A farmer is likely to choose Chauntea as his patron deity because it would perhaps increase his chance of attracting her blessings. But he would be a fool not to sacrifice something to Auril to prevent all his crops getting destroyed by some freak storm.

Patron deity is not excluding everybody else it is as I see merely a confirmation of the one deity you pay the most respect to. Though combining notions such as "patron deity" with a monotheistic background can easily lead to a monothestic devotion to said patron deity. As to what might change this? Perhaps it already is? Increased awareness will probably help shedding more light on the issue.

Though bear in mind I have probably interpreted some of what was written in a subjective light. I believe it was on page 93-94, 232-335, 258-259 in the campaign setting book it gets mentioned.

Thanks everyone, all this has been very helpful. I like the idea of showing respect to all Gods, I think I will go with being a Polytheistic person.

The picture I got when I was first planning the character was to be manipulative and charming, getting people to do stuff for him he didn't want to do for himself, and so on, at first I thought maybe it would be best that I chose a God/Goddess who works through manipulation also, but reading some of these suggestions/ideas/perspectives/opinions, it's not the only way and has given me more ideas.

Or at least having the appearance of doing so. In truth, he/she might not give a flying fuck about the unfolding drama of the pantheon, but just "go through the motions" to try to be normal. Or to please as many people as possible for whatever nefarious purpose, hehe.

Many good ideas on the table already here, but I'll still offer up a protip:

Hoar! The God of Poetic Justice!

Perfect for very specialized type of Bard, like someone who'd make the act of revenge into an art form.

They do if they don't want to go to the Wall, or want to fit in with almost everyone else in Faerun (retaining the plural 'deities' for that one, of course).
