Post subject:  Avatar / signature images & file size

Hello!

Does anybody else feel that avatars and signatures that add up to a megabyte or more are too much? I know these images aren't hosted on Amia's website, but I'm kind of on a slow connection for nowadays standards (1 Mbit/s) and I think it's strange if a tiny image takes 10 seconds to load.

A thumbnail avatar can be as little as 3K as many people demonstrate here. Just resize and safe as JPG and it should be fine. GIF animations that are simple slideshows without animations between the pictures are also much more friendly to my little modem. It's just something to keep in mind when choosing or creating your images.

Anyway, don't worry so much about me in specific: Disabling the loading of images is just one click away ...

Thanks, Ts

Could be worse, and it was back in the day. I mean, what if someone had a completely obnoxious animated picture that was attached to the end of their post? And like, what if that picture was this picture:

Wouldn't that be fun?

This was so relevant and I loved that second image so much that I dug it off of my old computer.

I'd suggest increasing your cache size so you don't need to reload all the images every single time.

Edit: Neus, if it were like that I'd be forced to kill you :P

It was.

In the past, the limit was not too tight as it is now. Some images on signatures would be so big you would want to slap the one who made it.

*coughs*

I don't turn on GIF animations unless I really want them. Makes the web a lot easier on the eye. And your obnoxious picture is only 100 KB ...

Anyway, yep, cache helps, blocking helps. Maybe little reminders help as well.

As long as you visit regularily is that no real problem since the old pictures get saved for some time.. but yes, generally quite annyoing for the ones with slower connections.

And the argument that not a lot of people have slow connections doesn#t counts either :P

I used to have dial up, now I just have bad broadband that takes a couple of mins to load each page.
Still, it does add to the overall prettiness.
