Post subject:  FR Environments

Alright, this might sound like a bit of a weird question, but here goes...

I've been learning the NWN2 Toolset and came up with an area design problem. Basically, aside from some common sense, I can't figure out what flora goes together. Obviously, Ghost Gums, Bamboo and Oak Trees don't grow in the same area, but do Birch and Holly, for example, belong in the same place? Do Weeping Willows only grow on river banks?

That there are gum trees in the Toolset, and they seem to have come from MotB, suggests to me that one of the regions in MotB has a pseudo-Australian environment, is it Thay?

What would the remaining forests of the Forest Kingdom actually consist of?

Where in Faerun would I find Pine, or Birch, forests?

Does anyone know of a resource somewhere that might answer these kinds of questions?

My guess would be the FR campaign guide.

I would have the job of directing you to various websites which "links" areas in FR to RL areas, such as Cormyr being France, the dales being sherwood england (complete with Banite Sheriffs of Nottingham).

Some of the comparisons are here : http://forum.candlekeep.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=52

There is a waaay more comprehensive list, but you'll have to find it yourself.

Most of the big forests of the Realms actually consist of FR-specific trees. Weirwoods, Bueleaves, and something like that.

I guess you have an easier job looking up individual forests and checking what you'd find there. The Ashenwood in Rashemen (featured in MotB), for example, has fir, pine, ash and aspen.

 ing willows are only found near a continual source of water, and I think that the trees depend on the environment(mountainous, wet, tropical, etc.)
