I'm a little confused as I just wasted 24 000 gold trying to craft a mythal onto an cloak, only to discover that my spellcraft bonuses weren't being added to the die rolls (thus making it impossible to succeed with). I figure this was because I must be incompatible with spellcrafting or something, so I thought I'd ask for some info on how it actually works so I don't waste my money in the future.
Is it something that you can only get bonuses to if you're a mage type?

You need at least 1 rank in spellcraft for bonuses from items to work. It's how Trained skills work. Same thing goes for hings like Open Lock and Disable Trap.

saves vs spells = total skill / 5 unlike tumble which is AC bonus = base skill / 5;
