Post subject:  Hello Amia

Hello Amia, I'm Silverface. I'm just starting out in Amia having been recommended here for RP ( very good recommendations it must be said ) and I have some questions not covered by the Rules & Lore section of the forum. I know I could ( and probably should ) PM this to a DM, but I'm quite frankly unsure about it because I'm only just starting out within Amia and the community around it.

But, moving on, my questions:

Orcs. Half-orcs, orc sub-breeds, the lot. How popular are they? Are there any player ran groups for them? Are there any links or wiki's that could help me roleplay such a character within the Amia setting? Is there any IC 'social negatives' that I should be aware of so I don't become offended when seeing such?

I'm a -big- orc fan in D&D, and always go out of my way to make a Half-orc, or recently in my last Forgotten Realms game, a grey orc. I've read the requests sub-forum, but I'm unsure if asking for a Grey Orc ( and all the stats + Grey orc only feats ) would be too much for a beginning player within this community.

Sadly, I've had bad experiences with asking for 'custom' or non-standard characters in other games or RP groups and don't want to overstep my boundries and make a bad impression when I'm just starting out.

Thanks in advance Amia,
Silverface

Grey Orc is not a supported race here. You won't be getting any race abilities.
You can, however, make a post in the requests forum to play as a full-orc.
You'll need to read this.

Perhaps try the other subraces that are available first?

There are plenty of half orcs around. I play one myself. There are many groups that would accept one, depending on your rp and alignment and patron and such. Check the pc story and pc notice forums and you'll find some. You can also simply make one and poke around a bit to see the lay of the land as it were.

As far as requests, I've never made a request for a special character myself but my personal advice is to get to know the server a bit and watch the request forums to gauge the level of research and quality of the request necessary for acceptance. I think it also helps to have a track record of roleplay on Amia when making such a request. As far as stats, I'm not certain but I think most of the ones I've seen you get the base stats of the race/subrace used to represent whatever it is you are going for and than are allowed to RP the special character. I don't think any custom work is ever done on such though I could be wrong on that and hopefully a staff member will correct me if I am mistaken.

Oh, and welcome!

Oh, I will. Starting out simple as a Half-Orc Fighter. I doubt I'll need anything custom wise that I can't just RP as if it's background or purely superficial.

The Grey-Orc remark was more idle musing really. Small steps at first!

Popular as in how populous? There is a handful of them played habitually. There isn't a specific half-orc grouping for them. There's a slew of factions on Amia, and probably can find a fit there somewhere for virtually every concept.

Orcs and their subbreeds aren't very popular from a 'how many of these are there' standpoint. We have a fairly decent halfling population, but there are some abberations on Amia. I would be wary of cutting teeth and taking Cordor specificly as the 'Amian' experience. Amia allows for people of all familiarity levels with RP, and tries to make it a home where all levels of capability are at least enabled to have fun. Cordor is a lot like Sigil.. just with more half/lesserbreeds and other things, due to the tolerance policy/trade city.

Custom PRCs/Races get no bonus stats, You can request one which is not on the subrace page on the lefthand side, and attempt to find what of the existing Subraces best fit it. ...However it'd probably require a skin change which you will need Dream Coins for, which are rewards for excellent RP. Which you can't get till after you've been RPing. ;)

I'd get a feel of the server with something a bit more friendly. Its a pretty huge module.

Just so you're aware, if you -do- decide to do a grey-orc later, you will have to make a request and it will have to be a completely new PC, its just the way things are done.

Amia's DM staff is pretty evenhanded about the requests but custom race PC's usually are something which they attempt to dissuade people from playing for their first PC on Amia. (Part of it is also them getting to know you as a player from seeing what you do from the client.)

Cordor isn't necessarily much like Sigil these days. Not since the Commonwealth.

Anyways, yes, I do suggest playing a "normal" subrace, and would also suggest not playing a Underdark race as well. You seem to have that covered though.

There's some half orcs, though Humans, Planetouched, Elves, Drow and Halflings are by far the most popular races on Amia.

If you play a half-orc, don't play a stupid one, please. Not brain-numb, nor infantile, nor pants-on-head. Unintelligent? Go for it. Simple? Okay. But please, don't play yet another "guh i am orcs ok i smash you!!" half-orc. Do something fun and new with it.

An evil one as well! Gods sake make it a little bit nasty. An underworld enforcer would be nice...

As for the groups, they have been started in the past but never really grew because of timezone issues etc. I'd be happy to dust of my Garash if you need a counterpart for some rp! :D

Funny. I seem to remember getting one of my characters changed from a Svirfneblin to a Lurker (The cloaker/gnome type) with a request without having to start anew.

And, knowing the population of half-orcs at the moment, there aren't enough in the same timezone to start a group right now. That's not to say it's impossible, though.

There's a difference between being turned froma gnome to freaky gnome-fucked up hybrid, and turning from a half orc to a full orc of a different orc type entirely. ... Clearly.

You have a point there.

@Colapops: I gave him Intelligence 14 for just this very reason. I hate playing 'hurr durr stoopid orc hurr durr' types. Problem is I gimped myself in terms of Con. Owell.

@Billytheid: I find evil characters hard to play really. Lawful Neutral is as nasty as I'll get sadly. Though I'll think up something.
