Post subject:  Recommending with the DC Wand

With the fact that a lot of RP is not observed by DM's I've personally made it a point to use my DC wand to recommend people pretty often as I can. Especially lately with those around me who have been instructing my character in the ways of being a druid and shifter.

I was curious though if there were any house-rules as to the recommending of people. If the DM's start to see my name recommending people often do they get questionable about the fact of it's frequent use? Does it only matter if there is a DM on at the time on the server to even make a difference?

It seems in some ways that with a large player base the players, and not the DM's, are primarily responsible for noticing well performed RP and making sure that it is encouraged by seeing it rewarded.

So I try to use mine often, but I'd like to know if there is any fear that this has been abused in the past and so it can often be regarded with suspicion when used frequently. Especially when the player is new and not so well known by the community for OOP decisions in such matters.

Rarely use it, As it's so few DMs online @ my timezone

So unless there is actually a DM active on the server at the time you use it then it is nothing more than a nice gesture that still goes unnoticed?

Correct.

however, logs are kept so if there is active dc wand use in a group and a dm happens to log in during your time and the group is on, you will most likely be on the top of their list.

It seems unfortunate in that regard that the wand is very situational in its use. I understand otherwise the DM's would likely be overloaded with DC wand recommends though.

It seems infrequent that there is DM activity on B Side, during certain times because of timezone issues, and/or of course they want to be able to play their PC's as well.

It's been said more than once, by more than one DM: use the wand.

Use it when you wish to recommend someone's RP. That's all there is to it.

If that is how it works then I'm more than happy to continue to smite RP'ers like I have been with said wand. I just wanted to make sure of some of the finer points of using it in the meantime.

Post subject:  Re: Recommending with the DC Wand

We actually can see the recommendations for the entire reset, even if we were not on when they happened. Thing is, the RP is usually over or I'll see OOC stuff going on when I do stop in.

Its one of the first things I do logging in is check the recommendations (Which tell me how long ago the RP was recommended) and then go see it.

Since we are talking about it too. The idea loses power when I see a group all recommend themselves after PVP. Or while they are borderline cybering. I'm sorry, but I hardly care to watch the same characters make out and expect DCs from it. Same for PVP.

Even when I was still a player, I'd teach SD all the time and I'd get a lot of DCs for it. After awhile when I did it so much of the same thing, I'd stop getting DCs for the same old. Recommendation for the same stuff again and again gets old and we will usually pass for more interesting things, or the million requests we get for rebuilds, XP taken away, PVP complaints, Job Log resets, questions, people getting glitched into odd spots, random questions, etc.

Its a good habit to use it right before RP starts, especially if it will be long. If there is no DM when it started in the first hour of the server, you have three more hours for the DM to see it.

I was using it more on the after-basis that RP had happened and it was excellently done. I'd hate to use it before a session starts and have that flub and waste DM time usually. I will see if I can make it work though and try it in a few different ways and see what happens.

Untrue. We have a list we can view in game for recommendations over the past 8 hours.

Can you view it playerside, you mean?

I'm actually pretty guilty of very rarely ever using my wand. I figure it looks weird to have my character get up close and personal to the target and look like he's groping them while I whisper "Nominating you for a DC" in the target's ear.

Does it have to have such a short range? And does it have to have a use emote?

We can view it as DMs, which is the point in time that we do DMly things.

Indeed. I use it regardless of who is on, and have seen it work.

Well that is good to know now. I'd much rather be able to recommend someone after good RP at least for them to have the opportunity for recognition when the DM's get the chance than to use it before RP starts, not be able to use it again for 2 resets, and then have the RP fizzle suddenly after a DM possibly has a chance to come watch.

Still. Gotta be a DM online if you're intending to be rewarded. :(

Post subject:  Re: Recommending with the DC Wand

True, but better to use it than let it gather dust. That is what it was made for, and it seems an efficient use of the wand anyway since the DM's can't be everywhere when they are online.

At least then your RP has the chance of being noticed and rewarded rather than waiting to catch in on a DM plot or something similar.

It's useful for more then them just being everywhere when online. Its useful because they can't cover half the timezones players are in, so there is a miniscule chance someone in an unDMed timezone may still get a DC for their RP. If their extremely lucky.

True, at least you've told them, "Hey I think you did an awesome job, and I hope you get recognized for it." A chance is still better than none, and I'd say it'd encourage them to bring their 'A' game all the time when interacting with people and not just when a DM is potentially around. Especially if they know you're someone who takes the time to use the wand.

To answer the question if we can view it playerside, yes we can. But we can not exactly do much without abandoning our own RP.

Post subject:  Re: Recommending with the DC Wand

I'm curious on one or two things.

I thought that I had read somewhere or heard that the actual RP logs are flagged and a DM can review the RP at a later date. Is that not the actual case?

Besides that I was wondering if the 'One use every two resets' is the actual restrictions on it? I know things can get changed and the descrips not updated sometimes, so I wanted to be sure.

Along with the above point, is there any way to get that restriction lifted to maybe once every reset? I'd just hate to use it, have the RP go south for some reason, and then get some great RP after the reset and not be able to flag that.

Another thing I just thought of: When you flag some RP, does it point out those around the person you used the wand on? Like if I am in some RP with three other people and I use the wand on one person does the DM see all four people's RP or just the one person?

That's it for now, thanks!

Send a PM to a DM to let them know why you gave a recommendation. It's not necessarily going to get that player a DC right away, but it's a ping on the radar. I would guess that it's motivating to have something to go see in the DM client as opposed to jumping from one place to the next hoping to strike gold.

The other benefit is obviously, you can fit more than one player and more than one instance of recommended RP into a PM; you can only wand one player at a time.

Also, there's a Roleplaying Praise thread, should you feel the need to just let everyone know how great a certain player's roleplaying is. Which you should, if like Dakotean you're always on the forums to post something. ;)

Can we get opinions of more DMs on this PMing as a follow up to DC Wanding?

The RP praise thread is all well and good but not everyone wants to shout out which characters they were RPing with for fear of metagaming. That and the RP praise thread is not too specific as to what has happened and to be honest should have the same use limit as the DC wand(jk).

I don't use it very often. I use it when I think it's something that could be unique, though that's rare. (Sorry not sorry but we're not all as original as we think.) Mostly it's when I think it's something a DM can enjoy and/or influence. Part of it is to let them know that you are characters actually RPing and, maybe if they're in the mood, they can instigate the RP in a new direction and involve you in something bigger than yourself!

I hardly do it for DCs. I probably sound like a prick, but I've eaten over 50 for leveling characters anyway. :) DC hoarding is for losers! Eat 'em up like snickerdoodles!

I use the DM wand whenever I rp with a person who just gives a great performance, or see RP that impresses the hell out of me, dramatically or comedically. I've only recently started doing this because I think that people who put an effort into making their character be all that it can be deserve a reward, be it a tell saying "awesome" or a DC. Incidentally, since I have been doing this, I have started to receive DCs myself. Dont know if I'll ever use them, but it feels good.
