Is there a specific Shadovar language? I vaugely know the history of Shadowscape and was wondering if there was already something on this somewhere?

Since Shadovar originate in the city of Shade, I'd believe Loross (High Netherese court language) or Netherese would be their "official" national tongue.

Could players of Shadovar born PCs then assume that their PCs by default speak Netherese and Common? Could this have an unwarrented impact on PCs researching Netherese artifacts, magic and so on? Is there any FR lore resources that Shadovar PCs may wish to examine?

Provided the character is originally from Shade (as I think that's the only source of Shadovar, that should be all of them, unless their parents fled it or something), I'd think speaking Netherese would be entirely acceptable. Consider it a benefit of their birthplace. I myself have a character that's Shadovar, and he does speak Netherese. As for sources of Shade/Shadovar lore, the only thing that comes to me off the top of my head is the entries for those in the FR campaign setting book. There might well be other sources in other FR materials though.

Huh? You don't need to request any languages on Amia.
Every human and demihuman gets at least two languages automatically: Common or Undercommon, and their racial/regional language, that is, their native tongue.

I don't think such a rule has been introduced in the last few months? At least there's been no update to the Creating Your Character -topic in ages.
Either way, I assume Netherese is kinda like classical Greek or something, and scholars have probably documented it fairly extensively. People interested in archeology, the history of religion or magic study it.

I guess I could spend my time digging up sources where you're not encouraged to know 18 languages on Character Creation because it's absolutely ridiculous, but mostly I thought it would be common sense.
...I suppose I'm not sure if it's an actual, written-out rule or not.

It hasn't been before and I saw no announcement. Use of common sense has been encouraged, and the use of D&D rules as a guideline (if you lack the former, I guess) but you certainly don't have to submit a request for it.

To my knowledge, the only languages one needs a request to know are secret languages like druidic, and that only if you aren't a druid. While I do find it utterly ridiculous that everyone and their brother seems to know drow without a good reason to, there's no rule against it. Generally, I don't mind it if a person with high lore and/or high INT knows a few extra languages. It goes with the territory of being a bard, wizard, or sage, which someone with like 30+ lore would definately qualify as.
There's no reason a non-Shadovar person with high lore or other appropriate knowledge or skills (being an archaeologist come to mind) couldn't learn Netherese. It's probably one of *the* languages to know if you're studying any sort of ancient human artifacts, or magical artifacts in general.

Well I simply assumed the common sense was a rule. My mistake. I should know better on Amia... And yes, I know that you can know languages if you have a high int! That is part of the common sense I was talking about.
...it really should be a rule though. (Not actually. I'm just saying I agree with Gers: some people are so annoying.)

Why didn't I choose latin as an extra language when I was drafting my character sheet?! I'm sure I have at least 12 INT. If people take drow just like that, why couldn't I take latin? Stupid DM, this language quest sucks...

A human gets Common automatically, then other languages based on INT modifier, so no, if a human has INT of 10 or less, they get only Common. The following is how it works in 3.5 FR. Player's Guide To Faerûn, page 8, states: "All characters know Common. In addition, each character knows the automatic languages listed for her region." After that comes the note about Int modifier and languages: at character creation, you may select bonus languages which must be from the list given for the character's home region. Then, of course, there's the standard way of studying languages: "A character can always choose to learn additional languages beyond her automatic and bonus languages by purchasing ranks in the Speak Language skill." So in fact, your Intelligence modifier is usually not a factor at all in your learning Loross or other exotic languages; it's probably not one of your regional bonus languages so you couldn't choose it at creation anyway. A PC with the human region of The North would automatically know Common and Illuskan. He could choose Chondathan, Dwarven, Elven, Giant, Goblin or Orc as a bonus language if he had the Intelligence. Anything else he would have to learn with Speak Language, and this isn't directly limited by Intelligence modifier (though you need to be smart enough to talk in the first place, and afford the skill points). Other races have their own regions, and a Dwarf from human lands would know Common, Dwarven and the language of that land automatically. It stands to reason that everybody in 3.5 knows at least one language in addition to Common. It would be mighty odd if you didn't have a native tongue. Common is, after all, supposed to be a global trade language with no native speakers to speak of (haha). I was wrong on one point, though: after looking through the books, I didn't find any mention of choosing either Common or Undercommon. You always know Common, and Underdark races also know Undercommon. I think I read otherwise somewhere, but I couldn't find it so I was probably mistaken.

I always saw Latin as truespeaking, but, that's just a personal use for the language in DnD and not Amia specifically.

No, I confirmed that any Real World Language is treated as common. You're free to use the phrases to add a bit of flair, but if you rattle off some French to sound Cormyrian, you don't get to go "it's another language and you don't understand me!". It was ruled that people are allowed to Babelfissh (or etc) and translate it and treat it as if you'd spoken Common.

So, A Shadovar would get Common and High Netherese on creation if they had Int. 12 or above? Also, Thieves Cant counts as a language! And a secret one! I would really love to see a minimum number of Rogue/Assassin levels required before you had access to 'Thieves Cant' (like 10 at least) but I guess that belongs in another topic.

Shades are not Shadovar, and if you want to be a Shade you need an explicitly written request, btw.

Shades are literally infused with the essence of the shadow plane. They're not-quite human anymore. Shadovar are infused as well, but to a far lesser extent. It's like comparing a drop of water to a swimming pool.
Edit: Oh, forgot one important thing. The shades have gone through special rituals that have made them how they are. Your average Shadovar, on the other hand, has just been exposed to the shadow plane's radiations and essence for an extended period of time, over numerous generations, instead of having that and having it force-fed to them by the rituals.

So it's kinda like how bards and sorcerors might have dragonblood in them that help them be magical? But RDDs have a lot more and undergo rituals to strengthen it and make themselves super-dragon-like?
If only..

A shade is born when the Enclave in Shade city chooses to gift one of it's citizens with power. Telemont and I believe the princes can endow this gift. Pre 4E this is the only documented way to become a shade.

I imagine Shar could make them too. But yes, by far I'd think most of them would be made by Telamont and his followers. Regardless, such would require a request, given it's sort of like being a noble, but with special powers to boot.

Yeah. Shadovar are just the Netherese human who lived in Shade Enclave for centuries. For all that trouble, they got ugly gray skin and that's about it, as far as I understand. I'm not even sure if that's their skin color, or if they look normal.

You're probably right. Where did you find this information, though? I've been trying to locate some basic physical description of normal Shadovar so I could write the subrace description for Amia, but no luck.

I am also working through some forgotten realms novels, eventually I'll make my way to ones involving them. http://www.candlekeep.com/library/articles/shade.htm <- this is more or less accurate here. I can't remember where I got the informatin on their physical appearances but I remember reading it for a fact.

From Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting and Lords of Darkness: FRCS wrote: Shade
Most shades appear as humanoids of their former height and appearance, but with grayish or nearly black, dusky skin and veiled eyes. They are often thinner than normal for their races. LoD wrote: Appearance and Personality
The physical traits of a shade are described in the FORGOTTEN REALMS Campaign Setting. Shadovars who are not shades are identical to their outsider masters, but lack the distinctive gray cast to their skin.
The Shadovars dress in clothing that seems (to other residents of Faerûn) outdated to the point of antiquity; their courtly attire may appear outlandish and alien. They favor dark colors such as black, burgundy, charcoal gray, dark green, and midnight blue. Members of the upper class wear a great deal of jewelry; gems and jewels are also often cunningly woven into their ensembles. They are also fond of gilt, gold thread, and cloth-of-gold accents. Common folk wear simpler garb as befits their trade, and slaves are permitted only serviceable, unadorned clothing that is only marginally better than simple homespun.

Haha. Shadovar look like the Shades as described in the FRCS except for the gray skin, but their skin color is about the only substantial thing said about the Shades in the FRCS? That's helpful. So I guess it's safe to say they look like thin Halruaans, Illuskans or whatever other peoples are descended from the Netherese. Not "exotic" to our minds, at all.

It probably should be the other way around. Bob Salvatore isn't exactly known for his adherence to the setting, though.

Mindflayers which suck the brains by intruding their tentacles through the nose and ears => Salvatore. Mindflayers attach their tentacles to the head, produce acid that burns through the skull from their mouths, and eat the brains from a skullbowl => Book of aberrations.
which one do you regard as more accurate?

Well I guess you'd have to go to older sources. It's possible it wasn't specified when Salvatore wrote his novels, or he failed to notice. I guess Book of Aberrations technically trumps older lore, but it's not specifically Forgotten Realms. No easy answer, I guess.
In general, there's no rule of thumb to tell you what source is the most reliable one. You need to look at them case by case. But this isn't the first time Salvatore makes mistakes. He's a big-shot novel writer, not a humble Realms-geek who considers the setting first. That's why I like Ed Greenwood, Elaine Cunningham, Steven Schend, Erik Scott de Bie etc. They actually know and care about the world they're writing for, they're not just using it as an excuse to share their own creations.

All Shadowvar are Shades...pretty much has to be. Not All Shades are Shadowvar...meaning not all Shades are from Shade Enclave, which is where all Shadowvar are from. You are right though, Salvatore writes his own way, this time he happens to be correct.
