Ok, so in spirit of all-things related to permadeath, please just hear me out on this one. How feasible would it be to implement a mechanic that allows players, upon character creation, to choose to make their characters 'hardcore'. It would be completely voluntary. A hardcore PC is in every way just like any other PC, except that if it dies, it gets deleted from the vault. Kind of like a throwback to old Diablo games, where upon beating the game successfully, you had the option to make new 'hardcore' characters. Maybe you could even color code their names in Red, so that everyone else instantly knew your PC was hardcore. Hence, IF you managed to take your hardcore PC far in terms of achievement and fame...everyone would know that he or she was particularly badass. ======= Granted, I could make a PC, call it 'hardcore' in his/her bio description, and just decide, myself, to kill off my own PC as soon as he/she dies for the first time. My only beef is twofold: 1) The 'temptation' to keep playing even after the first death is still there. It just -feels- more meaningful if I know, right up front, that there are NO takebacks...no matter what. 2) More importantly, how do I prove to other players that my PC is hardcore? Without a 'red' name tag, its only my personal word. It kind of stinks to work hard at getting a hardcore PC high in lvl and fame, only to have other players possibly doubt that my PC truly has never died. If red colored names aren't possible...maybe instead a Hardcore character could receive a Hardcore Widget, that when used, simply lets everyone know 'hey, I'm hardcore!' Just a personal and -sincere- thought, as I am considering making some hardcore characters and just seeing where this goes. |

Do it yourself. Why should we waste time on this? The potential for griefing and abuse isabundnant, not to mention DnD does not really lend itsef well to "Hardcore". ib4 pages of the same thing over and over. Quote: It kind of stinks to work hard at getting a hardcore PC high in lvl and fame, only to have other players possibly doubt that my PC truly has never died. Thought you were ding it for roleplay, not OOC bragging rights and recognition, which should rightfully mena absolutely nothing on an RP server? Plenty of people get to 30 without dying btw. It's not hard. Quote: Hence, IF you managed to take your hardcore PC far in terms of achievement and fame...everyone would know that he or she was particularly badass. What abnout an OOC tag makes you any more "Badass" than a PC that's done as much or more to legitimately earn it IC? |

Well of course, the player who 'chooses' to make their PC hardcore is accepting of those grief-related risks... I was mostly interested in some kind of way to 'prove' to others your PC hasn't died. Could at least some mechanic be added to your emote wand that, when selected, could display the total number of times your PC has been killed? |

Quote: What abnout an OOC tag makes you any more "Badass" than a PC that's done as much or more to legitimately earn it IC? Good point... I guess in that: No matter how much time/rp/writing you spend earning said title ICly, it was all entirely 'risk free'...in that the consequences for failure, most often, in simply having to write more rp and 'try again' EDIT: Other reason to include some kind of 'hardcore flag', whether it be with color coded names or with widgets, is to hopefully dissuade griefers...even if only to some extent. EDIT 2: Also, to clarify, I'm not talking about getting to lvl 30 without dying, per se. I'm referring to involvement of rp that includes risky deaths. Ie, assautling a Banite Keep, etc. Not so much just PvM...though the mechanic would apply to both. |

Red tags could be amusing. I know there's a few trigger happy players that might throw a death spell at you for looking hostile, thus ending hardcore status. |

*sigh* If people want to be "hardcore" they can already do so. If you die, don't play the character any more. You shouldn't need the devs to spend time on a system that you can use already pat your own ego. And if someone is that "hardcore" they should have the willpower not to play that PC for 2 months and *poof*, they're gone from your visible vault. Have fun rolling up new flavors of the week. |

I'm inclined to agree with Tormak. I could see some kind of a boost in XP for PCs who can't respawn or get raised, for those people who want to play the hard way, but a public tag that gives bragging rights seems superfluous and besides will invite metagaming. But then again, taking the rocky road should be a reward in itself. All in all, "hardcore" that is optional is not very hardcore. Whatever new things we come up with should apply to everyone equally and force them to take preventive measures IC if they want to steer clear of it. I don't think we need to split the playerbase even further into cliques with their own genres and expectations for RP. I would like the opposite, restricting individuality a little in favor of a clearer vision of the whole. (I know this is going to come back and bite me in the ass, because I'm very particular about what kind of individuality and freedom I'd like to reduce and what I would rabidly defend. It's also easy for me to say since I'm not the one doing the demarcation and taking responsibility for the consequences.) |

I get the feeling that the only people who would use such a system would likely just hide in some corner of the server never putting their PCs at risk. I agree that having perma-death can not only be allot more fun, but would also cause people to use PvP more carefully, but at the same time it is rather pointless if it is applied to only the people who choose it. |

If players want permadeath for their characters, they are free to do so ALREADY RIGHT NOW. You can just decide right now that your characters are dead, and never play them again, and you won't be forcing other players into doing something that they don't want to do. I see absolutely no need to integrate some complicated system. |

PCs are not that expendable. The whole reason why there's Raise Dead is so that you don't have to keep rerolling characters. If you want to challenge yourself, the rules you should be looking to play with are: 1. No respawning. Ever. If you die soloing, it's game over. 2. No raises in the entry area, unless your party was alive before the reset. See Rule 1. 3. Only your party may raise you, and if they wipe, it's game over. 4. You cannot run away from a fight, except where you have a legitimate out. 5. You may not use heal potions or cast quickened Heal in combat. 6. You cannot possess your familiar if you have one. 7. If your character can't be recovered, you must roll a different class than the one you were playing to continue the challenge. If you run out of classes to take, you can start back at the first class you took on the challenge. Also, you must alternate genders with each new character, well you don't have to but hey, why not? 8. The challenge ends when you give up. |

I like the list by Selmak...thats kind of a nice way to slide the difficulty slider to the right. Alright fair enough - can just permadeath yourself. It would still be nice to have some tool that can be used to display the number of times your PC has been killed, if for nothing else just to keep track yourself (Maybe you want to do a life-system, for example). Is this something that is especially difficult to do? Could even attach it to the Forums PC Player Tools feature, to check. Quote: Didn't this thread just get locked...? I really resent that. Really. This is a different thread covering a completely different idea. Just because it also happens to involve perma death in some fasion does not make it a continuation of the other thread. Besides that, whats it to you anyway? What difference does it make to you if other people post on this thread with ideas/discussion? You can simply choose to ignore it. Its not like its jumping in your face at 8:00 in the morning. Besides that, don't post if you don't have anything useful to contribute. Seriously. |

Even if one was created, it would only tell you who has died from its creation and then on. If we had a system and put it in tomorrow, it would tell us nothing about who may have died yesterday. It's a lot of work for absolutely nothing. If you want to "convert" them, just give yourself X amount a lives and keep up with it for yourself. You have to realize that someone has to sit down and come up with ways to script these things you suggest. If you can already handle it yourself, you're better off, because there really isn't the manpower nor the need for extraneous stuff to get worked on. @Kudark, I think he meant his own, other PCs. Or at least I should hope so, because as you said, there's really no reason for other players to know on an OoC level, which it would be under any case. |

With good reason too, like Tormak mentioned. We already have enough issues with PVP VS non PVP and RP builds VS non RP builds and cordor fluff RP versus REAL RP (whatever that is). Could you imagine the arguments and posturing if we actually implemented a tool that -physically- separated the "hardcore" players from the "pussies"? Very nice idea coming from an honest place, but quite easily followed on one's own Oh I'd totally be a pussy by the way. |

Quote: Very nice idea coming from an honest place, but quite easily followed on one's own ^^ That. Quote: Even if one was created, it would only tell you who has died from its creation and then on. That was my main question. In case I wanted to inquire how many times my PCs have died up until this point. But if that information is truly irrecoverable, then thats that - that was my question. So if I wanted to convert any existing PCs to a 'life' system, I would just go ahead and assign them lives 'now'. Only thing is, I kind of feel like I'm cheating, since technically they've died x number of times already and should have x fewer lives. Was my only concern. Also, sorry for my little outburst on thread-locking, but I just don't understand a player's need/desire to go into another player's thread and request it get locked. Almost sounds like one is going out of their way to mess someone else up. Unless that person really is 'that' afraid of perma-death... Also just want to quickly clarify I have nothing against players who would never want to play a game with permadeath. I have nothing against 'pussies'. I just like experiencing new things for the sake of it. I've only ever done -non- hardcore PCs and was looking for something a bit more thrilling. |

I was going to respond and be an ass...but I changed my mind. I WILL add something to the conversation: Why? This is scripting, this is modification, this is time the dev team would have to spend so someone could stand in Cordor, hands on hips, and brag about how totally 00b3rk00l they are, because that doesn't happen anywhere NEAR often enough now. Something like this, identifying an OOC accomplishment in-game, is one step closer to making this place a 'd00d s3rv3r'. There: my 2 cents. |

...and I assume the commentary about going 'into another player's thread and request it get locked' was aimed at me. For the record...I did no such thing. As for being 'afraid' of anything...in a GAME...really? I posted a thread a few days ago wondering why all the recent 'ideas' for realism were suddenly so popular, so this isn't the 1st time I've questioned suggestions along these lines. Don't take it personally. ...or do. Whatever. I'll sleep well regardless. |

Well there's your response right there... I don't take it personally though. What happened, was that I figured you implied that this thread was somehow a continuation of my other thread, which I did take offense to, as that could arguably be an interpretation of my character (that is, of someone jumping to start a new thread to somehow dodge thread locking). If you were in fact not implying that all, then its my honest mistake. I just wasn't sure how to intrepret 'wasn't this thread locked earlier?' As per your point about ooc bragging - I'll be blunt and honest, I think someone who can 'hardcore' a PC up to fame does deserve a little bit of ooc bragging rights. And by hardcoring up to fame, I don't mean just getting to lvl 30. I mean by engaging in risky rp that could involve pvp and assissinations...of which, because you did decide to play a hardcore PC, would involve more serious risks. Though I see the aforementioned points of 'further segregating' players into different little camps, kind of pitting them against each other, by implementing this kind of mechanic. I have faith in the players though, to get above such divisions...or am I oblivious? Also, I would be concerned with the tag actually 'attracting' griefers, instead of dissuading them, come to think of it. Because a Hardcore PC would be so much more of a juicy target than a regular PC. Could it somehow be implemented that only Hardcore PCs could perma kill other Hardcore PCs? That way, if you try and play some dangerous grief game against other hardcore PCs, your own PC must also be hardcore..and so you are subject the same risk. That might be hard to script/implement, though, not sure. |

Again, pretty much everything you want to do with permadeath is already allowable. If you feel you're "hardcore" and someone else thinks they're "hardcore", then you should have no problem convincing them "Hey, I just killed your character and dumped his body off a cliff. Mind not respawning?". if they say sure, then fine, if they say no, then no. It should be evident by now that no player will ever have the option to decide whether another character is permadeathed. I mean c'mon man, that's what half of the other thread was discussing. Just go out there and RP this stuff already. You and the other people that already play in that style don't need a system to back you. Just willpower to stick to your own "rules" you wanna invent. Edit: And not to be a prick, which I fear I'm feeling like by now, but OoC bragging rights are pretty much the worst thing to have on an RP server. Any bragging rights anyone should have that affect and determine RP should be IC. You want your character to be special for not dying? Have him advertise it IC. If your PC's never died he can honestly say IC "I have never died." And maybe that means something to someone. But "OoC bragging rights" just means more people bitching OoC and complaining "hey, this system is saying their RP is better than mine." Which is just...just silly, when our whole purpose is to appeal to multiple genres, like you said in that other thread. You get what you earn IC and with your story. Beyond that, "hardcore" gaming and "the rest of 'em" will never be any different than they are now. |

I'm always one for anything that might make the server on a whole a bit less quick to jump to PvP over and over and over and over and over and...... yeah, you get the point.... but, this is just too prone to griefing and a little too similar to giving your ego a handjob. Nice try, though! |

If you beat someone in PvP, you get to decide if they're knocked out...or killed. |

If the only time your PC has fallen in PvP, the other person RPed you as being knocked out, it's fine and true to claim. You're phrasing it in a way that neglects the very possibility the statement implies. "They are only able to claim such a thing if they've only been knocked out ICly, and never had someone "kill" them." That's the statement you're going for. Note, you can claim anything IC. You can claim that you're Ao's grandmother. Which is why none of this "bragging rights" stuff really matters. It just doesn't. My advice is to just RP whatever way you feel makes you more "hardcore" and not to expect something special out of others or the system. |

NOTE: Not to get off topic, but I do agree with blink in the sense that Amia is at least 'part' Arcade, but that isn't by any means a bad thing. Any good server should strive to satisfy as many gaming senses as possible by giving players options. Even some of the best rpers on the server have bragged to me with tells about how awesome their AC is, how they can solo beholders at lvl 16, or some other such things. Don't get me wrong- this kind of build-focused arcade style should never be the priority of Amia, since its a RP server. But is it a significant componant of the game? In that players 'regularly' talk about it, IG oocly, with party chat and tells? Sure. I've already said too much. Thats a whole different can of worms. >.< |
