Hello everyone, and blessings to all in the holy name of Elastra-girl!

So yeah... I am going to be in the process of doing several things - which depends on a bit of feedback - to the amiawiki.

First it's getting ready to get upgraded to the latest mediawiki release. That means a backup, software merge (not too many changed files but a few), and an upgrade. During that time, amiawiki may be down a bit. I am sure Xavi can't wait to hear that this is going to happen though!

Second, after the upgrade, it might get a new home on a shared hosting server instead of in my living room. That's if anyone wants it that way. Does anyone have any issues with speed or reliability as of late? One downside to being on the shared hosting server is that it doesn't support SSL (even though the SSL cert I have now is self-signed, it at least makes login at coffeeshops mostly secure). I don't think that the share hosting will support self signed SSL unfortunately. The upside is that the connection might be faster.

Howard (the server the amiawiki is now on) is also about to get a hard drive upgrade, which will mean that the amiawiki will be down while it gets updated to the latest ubuntu server software and reconfigured. Not sure how long that will take, either!

Pleeeeeeeease add that thing that makes people have to enter a code that they read in distorted text (a captcha?) before they can create an account! Those bots are driving me nuts! I've blocked probably 60 in the last week alone, plus each one leaves a page and an image that I have to delete as well! Aaaaaaaaargh!

Yes I will put a capcha plugin in there sure!

Of course, if they're driving you nuts, then maybe not. Because, as everyone knows, it's fun to watch Xavi squirm!

But that usually costs good money too. And Im fairly sure Wiki's are not for profit.

Okay .... MediaWiki 1.16.5 is now up and going, with a simple capcha for account creation. For some weird reason ReCapcha was removed from the capcha suite. In any case, I'll keep in touch with Xavi to see if that cuts down on the spam.

Enjoy the new version of MediaWiki! TONS of new changes and capabilities, and it should be nice.

(sorry for the derail) I'm not currently playing on Amia but might come back someday! I still try to keep in touch from time to time, and of course keep that wiki thing going for everyone.

I added reCapcha to it - works like a charm! Though some spammers have figured out how to get through even that - probably with using human brains or something.

Sina was Averest's character. She apparently still lurks the forums and posts about once a year - kinda like Wiggan

There were three new spam accounts created yesterday, instead of the usual 6-8, so I suppose that's an improvement. I of course appreciate all the work you did (and have done), Sha, but I'm a bit disappointed the buggers are still showing up. I shall continue roaming the halls of the AmiaWiki with my spray can of spamicide.

How about add a simple authorization code required before any new accounts are made? It could be something as simple and generic as "Amia" but something preprogrammed bots would have a difficult time guessing.

Captcha is easily hacked, most bots have Auto-Captcha these days.
Re-Captcha is the Google one which is never hacked.

A common and cheap method is simply answering a question. Say "3+3=?"

Or, even better, "What is the name of this NWN server?"

Unless someone specifically writes a bot for the Amia wiki, you'll never see spam again.

Anything is an improvement, there's like two or three bots posting an article and image every day.

I have been wondering how could've I've gone and updated all of the shifter forms when they weren't... up to date. But I think nowadays they are?
