I forget the answer to this question or even if it was asked, I blame age... or drugs when younger... or both. When CoT was overhauled to DC was the preferred weapon of the deity requirement kept? If so, what does Hoar's preferred weapon of a javelin translate to in game as we don't have javelins? Right now, using a scimitar, original I know, but he's Calimshite, so logical too. |

Divine Champion just requires Weapon Focus in a weapon, not the god's chosen one. But I give props to people who use their god's chosen weapons (I'm looking at you, Champions of Sune!) |

Spear or Trident altered to look like spear (short-spear or javelin) would work as his weapon. Gives you the option of deciding whether you want him to be a shield user and still be able to use Hoar's holy weapon. |

It's worth noting from a lore-perspective that not nearly all of the clergies actually use their deity's favored weapon type with any frequency. It was a silly 3e invention to forcibly invent some gimmick weapon for every god, when there was already established lore about the kind of equipment the priests commonly use. I think the 3e sources say the holy weapon is actually a miniature clerics use for ritual purposes, not usually their actual combat weapon. It can be cool to use something to identify with your church, but it's not like you're any less faithful to lore even if you don't throw stupid star-shaped shuriken with your Mystran. But Hoarites and javelins do make sense and are cool, of course. Just putting it out there. |

Also, a god's holy weapon is sometimes the name of the actually weapon they personally use. Like Torm and his greatsword Duty's Bond. So while it's kinda gimmicky to have every god have a particular type of weapon they promote above all others, the alternative of clergy wanting to emulate their god by using a similar weapons makes fine sense. It may give them a feeling of being closer to their deity. I know my Tormite keeps a ritual recreation of Duty's Bond for that same reason. She doesn't often use it though, usually only bringing it out for meditation or forms. |

Yeah, this is how I imagine they're generally used. What you say about the deity's own weapons makes sense, but doesn't really apply to nearly all the gods. I'm pretty sure Mystra doesn't have a pocket full of shurikens, and even if she does, they wouldn't be her primary emblem of identification. For some gods, it makes sense to worship through a weapon. For others (like Mystra or, say, Deneir) other emblems and icons are more likely. Joon keeps with him an empty scroll to meditate on Oghma, not a longsword that would have little relevance to his faith. |

Yeah, Mystra shouldn't even have one as far as I'm concerned. Her favored weapon should just be Magic or something. In the case of Eldath, she shouldn't really be interested in weaponry anyway, but they listed hers as a net or something. Illmater's is a bare fist, but again, not really a god that seems like they would concern themselves with it at all. I guess the thing is DnD is such a combat oriented game, they thought somehow the gods had to reflect this as well. Otherwise they'd get munchkins bitching about not having a uber holy weapon for their cleric. But I know I as a dungeon master would be like "... your god is a deity of creativity/knowledge/invention/pacifism... you really think that they even begin to concern themselves with something as trivial as what type of pointy stick you jab people with?" |

You obviously have never been in a fist fight otherwise you would know Illmaters diefic weapon makes perfect sense to that deity. Anyway I'm locking this because its been answered, poorly I may add, because its turned into a lore question and this is not the correct place for lore stuff |
