![]() While I acknowledge that the subject of "death on Amia" has been... ehm... beaten to death, this came up today. I have replaced the characters with colours to avoid any unnecessary fingerpointing. What's noteworthy is what Mr./Mrs. Pink here said. This all sounded awfully ridiculous to me, no matter how true it is mechanically. After I confronted the player in tells, he/she said that it was a DM approved view and there was nothing OOC about it. Now, I'm wondering what the general opinion amongst the players and DMs is whether or not this was inappropriate RP on Pink's behalf, or should I change my views accordingly to match the mechanical side of the server? |

How could talking IC about a trend that's easily and commonly observable IC be illegitimate RP? |

There's a difference between picking fun at a quirk and being asinine. Mr. Pink is being asinine. |

I wouldn't say it's illegitimate, as this is indeed an observable trend. However, true or not mechanically I prefer that death be treated a lot more seriously than that. Though that's just my personal stance on the matter. |

Frankly, yes it has always been a bit of a "gray zone" that people tend to skirt around with vagueries (players and even DMs alike). However saying ICly as a 100% factual statement that you "come back instantly to life" is just silly. What it boils down to is that at the end of the day, NWN is a video game and thus respawning exists. Yes, we could go the route of a more "hardcore" server and make it so that there is no respawning, but the staff has felt that such would simply unnecessarily dampen some of the "fun of the game" as it were. So really, leave it vague that "death doesn't seem to quite have the same hold over folks on Amia as it does elsewhere in the Realms," sure. But to outright say, "Na na na boo boo, I'll just come back to life instantly!" it just silly and should be avoided. Especially when referencing dungeon spawns as well; granted some of that can be accounted for with "repopulation" (eg. kobolds make more babies, bandits draw new people into their gang, etc.) but again it boils down to a game mechanic. The amount of bandits or illithids or anything else that are found in 95% of the dungeons IG go through even in one or two runs by a party, outweighs any realistic repopulation. This isn't because Amia somehow magically has a baby growth rate 100x greater than the rest of the realms, or because the illithids respawn the same way PCs do, it's again an entirely OOC part of a video game that's designed to keep it fun for all. Yes, it is still an observable part of the world, but the right thing to do is again to keep references to such things vague and circumstantial rather than hardline and factual in your IC RP. |

Though that's just my personal stance on the matter. I'd prefer that death be treated more seriously, too. But, in order for it to be treated seriously, it would have to actually *be* serious. Just a friendly opinion from the Please Remove Rez Scrolls From Stores department. EDIT: to mention that I'd been more under the impression that Mr Pink was talking about the tendency for slain people to be immediately raised IC by their buddies, not about the respawn button. If he was talking about respawning, then yeah, I'd agree that's kind of tacky. |

The best way to handle these arguments is to mock them in your head and otherwise ignore them completely, even going so far as to refrain from giving such axe-grinding a voice on the forums by posting about it. |

Mr. Pink looks like a facetious asshole who endeavours to be part of the problem and peanut gallery rather than part of the solution. Ergo, screw him. |

I still don't understand why you drew a bunch of dildos. |

While this was indeed my initial reaction to the whole scene, it was the player's firm trust that his opinion was supported by the DMs that made me want to bring this thing out. Of course, perhaps I should've just PM'd this to a DM instead of making a thread, and I apologize if you lot deem this to have been bad judgement on my part.Sunkin Sheep wrote: I still don't understand why you drew a bunch of dildos. It's not. the fact that DMs don't permakill you ever time you get killed in PvP doesn't mean they support a culture of 4th wall aware infinite ressurections because thye want to keep a server alive. |

Instead of removing raise scrolls, why don't we just remove the people that RP like twits? |

Tired as this argument is, I'll reply to the statement that "the lack of permadeath sucks" with yes and no. Mainly I'm of the opinion that what Glim said is pretty accurate: this is a game, something people play in order to have fun. Harsh permanent character death rules could, easily, detract from that. Yes, that leaves us with the awkward situation of "Assassin kills random mark, goes to town to have a well-deserved drink and runs into random mark, already there, telling everybody about this asshole who just stabbed him". There's no way one can look at that and not draw the conclusion that it's... well, retarded from an IC perspective. |

Since the original question is answered, and this is quickly degenerating, guess what time it is. |
