First, hello to you all. I've recently bought Neverwinter Nights on GoG and I've been looking around these forums and have been trying to make myself a character concept. Thing is, I'm not quite sure how I'll work it out, as I'm a noob at roleplaying. I have some difficulties at establishing my character's personality, goals and the reason of coming to Amia :S In any case, I have a bit planned already.

My character is going to be a neutral good human fighter at start;
STR 16
DEX 14
CON 12
INT 14
WIS 8
CHA 12

A part of my character concept, I wanted him to develop some kind of faith in some god over his personal growth (Tyr sounds nice to me, as a kind-hearted warrior always ready to lend a hand)
And eventually become a divine champion. (Character build wise, I had Fighter/CoT/WM for classes in mind)

So here are the questions :
1. What a WIS of 8 says to you, personality-wise?
2. What would you suggest to do as a new roleplayer when creating a character?

Thank you in advance for any advice and answers! I hope to start playing soon :)

Stats make sense for a WM, the required stat split is purely nightmarish. My advice would be to take 7 WM levels, as few fighter levels as possible, and pack yourself to the gills with CoT.

Wisdom 8 = You are the kind of person who doesn't check the roll before using the bathroom in a public toilet, makes sweeping generalizations about people, and thinks that double the heat equals half the cooking time. In other words, bad ideas sound good to you, and you don't think of good ideas very often.

As a new roleplayer, join up with an existing group. If possible, join up with a group of powergamers who know the ropes of the game. You'll learn tips and tricks very very quickly and they tend to be good people and involved in interesting matters. Don't let people sell you on hate-talk about them either, they're just jealous that they can't kill us. :D

8 wisdom is slightly below average, which means that the character might be predisposed to making some poor decisions (running up the stairs instead of down... come to think of it, most horror movie characters seem to have 8 or lower Wis), or lack common sense to some degree, be naive, and so on. It's mostly up to you, as a player.

What I do when creating a new character is start with a basic concept (paladin, lolthite drow male, whatever), give the character a few basic personality traits (he's patient/impatient, a nice guy/a-hole, etc.) and let IC interactions shape their personality. It isn't to everyone's taste, mind you, as some people prefer to start with a very clearly defined character.

I suppose the best advice I can give you, as a new roleplayer is: stay in character as much as possible and try to enjoy yourself. After all, that's what it's all about, having fun. So, that said, welcome to the server (and roleplaying)!

Thank you for the quick replies! You about rounded up what I already thought about WIS 8. Although, I'd say horror movie characters have a WIS of 6, ahah! And thank you for the tips! I'm getting mixed up in my ideas/lore gathering :)

One aspect of this I don't think is accurate. Int more determines whether you come up with good ideas. Wisdom is more your self examination. You might come up with a lot of good ideas, but you don't have a filter for the stupid ones.

I fear horror movie characters have no wis at all. I was watching one the a week ago with my brother.

So there was this chick who escaped a cannibal. Of course he came after her. She ran away into the forest, screaming, so of course he would exactly know where she goes.

Smart move. naturally, she was also constantly turning around so that she not only considerably slowed down but also did not see where she was going and fell down a hill and broke her leg. So there was the end of that chase.

Not that the cannibal was smarter, mind. I mean he was decorative enough to put an apple into her mouth before shoving her into a crematory oven. Every cook in the world likely have cringed at this. My dear boy, one does not toss a steak into the flames, unless you want to create coal.

Oh well... it had some entertainment value I suppose. :P

Anyhow... welcome to Amia!

By the way, welcome to Amia, where no point, no matter how insignificant, goes uncorrected! :D

(though incidentally he's right)

Actually, even better: Play a dwarf. They have a strong built-in community, very supportive players, and are fun as hell to be around. They also happen to need a cleric!

Yes, I see that! I think a part of my character's personality would be easily explained by the 8 WIS : He's naive and quick to trust others. If someone claims a friend of his has done something wrong/terrible, He won't even think one bit that his friend is guilty of anything until he sees evidence, and really good evidence at that!

That is, if I am not wrong to link this to WIS.

An interesting thought, I will think about this. I'll have to look into dwarves and priests, as I've never really played a cleric!

Lemme go ahead and slow down that train of thought a bit. This particular character flaw is pretty common, to the point of where I don't consider it an 8 wis flaw. This is more a flaw people can still have at 18-20 wis simply because they're goodhearted and trusting, especially a NG character.

I'd actually suggest you treat your first character as a test character and not get very attached to it. Roam the server and learn about who's here, then start making plans for a new character to capitalize on what you've learned. It may seem like some work but you'll be much, much happier down the road.

I see. It's true that being goodhearted and trusting doesn't really have much to do with wisdom. With this though, you made me realise a High Int/Low Wis flaw : Building up logical ideas, but not taking the time to think about it much.

Other than that, I think I'll follow your advice and explore a bit of Amia, to learn about faction locations, jobs and even get some roleplaying basics. Man, these forums are quite the learning experience, and not only for newbies. :P

Low wisdom doesn't mean you have to make stupid mistakes, you may just be easily distracted or forgetful at times. Look at the tenth doctor, he's a bit of a bumbling imbecile at times.

I understand what you mean. He's dosing off all the time x). I started earlier today and I huh... died to kobolds. My own fault for wanting to help without seeking help. Anyway, I feel my character's bland. I guess I can't do much about it though, I just try to play my character's personality at the moment. Didn't have the occasion for really deep RP yet, although I did have a RP encounter earlier today... It's kind of awkward to try to type and move instead. To tell the truth I'm a bit clueless at what I should do for the moment...

Cordor's not the place to go if you want deep roleplay, try to garner some gold and have a look around.

What? Wrong!
It's THE place to go to with the warmongering going on, alongside the crazy ass politics and behind the curtain assassinations. 0.0

I'm so depressed with the "I'm new help me threads"... If I was knew and folks acted like typical internet crazies and arguing pedantics, semantics, and all that bullshit.

Welcome to the server, it takes some time to get adjusted. A big part of adventuring is finding the right gear for the right situation. If you were going to the beach you bring a towel, sunblock and shades. If you were going to the basement you would bring a flashlight and a golf club to beat up the monster (water heater) making all.that hissing noise.

My point isn't of course to go buy a beach towel IC. But prepare for each situation and encounter seperately. Tactics, gearsetting, and so forth. I'm sure if you go about ic and ask how best to kill kobolds or orcs or trolls (burn it with fire)... You will get rp experience, you will learn the server, and you will begin to understand mechanics.
