Apparently there are goofballs that somehow manage to gain divine powers from dead deities.... so I guess the answer to this question really doesn't matter, but I'm curious...


Are all the deities in the amia deity list alive, or are some of them dead?

Typically people who are granted power from a dead deity are actually granted that power by a living deity masquerading as the dead deity - see Moander with Lolth.

Now I might be mistaken on this, but I think all the "things" on the Amia deity list are alive and well.

Yeah, sometimes I get confused by freakin Wikipedia... and the fact that we kinda put the lore timeline on "pause" to avoid running into the dreaded 4.0 lore. (run away!) Maybe we should come up with some fun stories to kill off some of the gods that are dead now (by now I mean in 4.0), but give them better endings than "rocks fall and you die."

None on the list are dead gods.

Here are the dead gods a human might have followed (as of 3/3.5). There are a few dead monster deities and demon lords/ arch devils as well that I didn't list. Those that were consumed would have spells granted by the one that consumed them:

Amaunator– Contested as to what happened to him. Lathander most likely would grant his spells.

Auppenser (sleeping, not dead)– Would still grant spells but I assume on approval only.

Bhaal– Consumed by Cyric.

Gilgeam– Killed by Tiamat. (Rest of the Utheric pantheon besides Assuran is also dead.)

Ibrandul– Consumed by Shar.

Karsus– Only briefly a god, wouldn't grant spells.

Leira– Consumed by Cyric.

Moander– Killed by Finder Wyvernspur.

Murdane– Killed by Umberlee and indirectly by Lathander.

Myrkul– Consumed by Cyric and then Kelemvor.

Mystra's 23 different forms.

Tchazzar– Consumed by Tiamat.

Tyche– Killed by Moander and her essence split into Beshaba and Tymora.

Iyachtu Xvim– Consumed by Bane.

Yeah, although there's been talk of requests for stuff like Servant of the Fallen who draw power from the actual dead deity (Bhaal would be a candidate since no one pretends to be him with a straight face anymore). The only one I can actually think of though is Marcus the Amaunatoran and well yeah it's a weird situation and Lathander grants spells on his behalf (in this case anyway).

Gods don't really fully die. They're just floating around the Astral and that's why it's easy to draw power from them as a Servant of the Fallen. I mean, there are no difficult prerequisites to meet for the feat; anyone familiar with the god and its worship, and strong enough in their faith, could take it. Their rarity is more due to the fact that there's no reason for someone to dig up record of a dead deity and randomly decide to worship them, so I mainly see it working for someone like an old cleric of Leira who still remembers her (or the child of one) or a reclusive clan of psionics maintaining the memory of Auppenser.

Followers of Amaunator gain spells both from Lathander via Heretic of the Faith and from Amaunator via Servant of the Fallen. It's not so much unclear as it is a mixed bag.

To this day, there is no official rule about Servants of the Fallen (or other canon but non-deity system choices) requiring approval, but that is the line DMs have seem to maintained in their posts recently. I doubt the character creation rules will ever be thoroughly updated to reflect practice, but it's good to be annoying about it.
