Post subject:  Alternate Beginnings: Mage Academy

In a recent treatise published in the wake of Colin Reyes by a coalition of Oghman scholars from various paths and professions, it has been presented that the use of magic hastens communities towards ruin.

They cite the several magicial endeavors and previous fortresses of magic that are now abandoned and left as reminders of folly and the limits of power: Electric Castle. Darkhold. Wyrmhold. The Mystran Grove, now infested by creatures of magic which feasted on their own flesh and blood.

The treatise is initially received poorly by the small Mystran community which remains in the aftermath of the Arcanum, and is decried as an unfair evaluation on the influence of magic. The peer-reviewed journal based in Cordor in which the Oghman treatise was published responds with an appended article, expressing that the history of the island of Amia and the surrounding regions does not have a history of responsible magical use.

The blame, while not overtly leveled, is placed on the Mystran community by the editor and author of the treatise on magic, creating a thin line of tension between the Oghmans and the Mystrans.

The Independent Island of Tarkuul is not excluded from the article, as in later editorial pieces, Tarkuul is included as a potential location of irresponsible magic use due to the excessive use of necromancy and other "forbidden schools of magic." The editor adds a footnote, however, that he does not personally believe in any need for forbidden magics as long as proper teaching and ethics are established, to which he again calls out the magisters of the Mystran faith.

Excerpts from later editorial pieces on the subject are scathing and opinionated, while drawing on the hype of recent events and a long history of magical irresponsibility:

Quote:
"The Island of Amia has historically always had an apparent foundation of worshipers who are exclusively Mystran, even if there is a deficit of divine service amongst them. The Mystran clergy spreads themselves too thin in attacking problems that are none of their business, and instead of teaching and instilling the ethics of magic and responsible use, they flagrantly use the weave.

In the recent year, we saw the taint of the Arcanum infiltrate the capitol of the Mystran Faith, the former Mystran Monolith, and steal away many students and worshipers of Azuth and Mystra to worship the false teachings of Colin Reyes and the folly of Karsus.

The reason for this phenomenon is squarely the fault of the Mystrans who have failed our young magisters, and even our elder magicians, and anyone who desires to learn and appreciate magic for what it is. What happened to the Mystrans whom granted scholarships, safe haven, and nurturing instruction to our island? Knowledge to do and act well with the power they have been given is lacking, and has been for some time.

We have a populace that has been given instruction and tools--even young children and people who cannot use the art can explain the use and components of Legend Lore, Scrying, and so on... But they cannot explain ethical use of magic. When too much is too far. Where have our Mystrans gone?"

The article, popularly titled after its publication as "Where Have Our Mystrans Gone?" causes the Mystran community, and even some Azuthians become irrate and whipped into a small frenzy in their studies. Private and solitary research which has become the normative behavior for many is cast aside. The few that are left come together for the first time in years.

And so begins the foundation of an idea, and the creation of a curriculum, for a new Academy of Magic.

-----------

The OOC:

This alternate beginnings is going to be a partial standalone, and thereafter will be occurring in real time on Amia, where you will interact with other characters. New characters and pre-established characters are more than welcome, and are in fact encouraged to participate in this event. While it is a standalone concept, it will become integrated into the server (most likely) and is not exclusive by any means.

Recommended classes are: Bard, Wizard, or Sorcerer. Paladins, Clerics, and Rangers of Mystra/Azuth are permitted, but only as brand new characters. New characters must be: Bard, wizard, sorcerer, paladin (Mystra/Azuth), cleric *Mystra/Azuth), or ranger (Mystra/Azuth). Cross classing is permitted. No alignment restrictions. Character may be monotheistic or polytheistic, and/or worship deities of magic that are not Mystra or Azuth, though worship of Mystra and Azuth in some form are preferred as per the established premise.

New characters may be "child characters" given the nature of the academy, but only by approval. Unapproved child characters found to be participating will be aged up to the appropriate age level.

Please only PM me with questions which are not answered here, or with personal questions about your concept (like playing a juvenile, alignment, deity, whatever)

Sign ups for your character will be posted here, and I will add them to this post. There is an unlimited number of slots.

Though Marcus isn't a Mystran nor an arcane caster, he's been a strong supporter for the regulation of arcanists for a long time. If possible, I'd be interested in Marcus being involved in this context, likely as a more hardline element.

This feels more like a necessity than an honor. Not sure how this will play out as I'm conscious of at least three initiatives going on simultaneously for a mage tower ICly. But the team is aware of them. Anyway, for instructional purposes, please call:

The newsletter is public in the region, but featured in a scholastic peer review journal which is printed in Cordor. The journal is a niche thing that only perhaps wizards, scholarly bards, historians, teachers, and so on would read. It is academic, not leisure. Such a publication is available for perusal in libraries, and for sale in bookstores, which exist in Kohlingen, Tarkuul, Bendir Dale and Cordor.

Constant commitment is not required. Your characters are free to come and go as they wish, and be involved in other plots, situations, offices, etc. As of yet, we have no students, which is unfortunate, but if there is no desire to roll a new character, I will create student NPCs for everyone to teach.

The location for the Mage Academy has been announced following a shred business venture by a firm of magisters, capitalizing on Cordor's tendency to be unable to hold onto the territories it gains through military endeavors. Weakened by the war, and no longer having enough man power to protect all of its land holdings, the reluctant bureaucrats sold off the land holding in the Delta and a lease was made for the building. No evictions took place during the exchange or the days after, but protests did occur after the reveal was made by some concerned citizens; however, the selling off of the Delta territory, which was only technically owned by Cordor after its annexation, frees Cordor from obligations and allows them to focus on the more lucrative ventures in Gulorand.

The structure of the leased building is not changed, and the Academy adapts to the structure of the former inn.
