Just a quick thing that I have been thinking a bit about. Are there general guidelines or even rules on this server in terms of recognizing lycanthrope pc's? Are there particular traits that all have that would be a give away? Is there any skill or feat or personal experience that could influence whether or not they could be detected? Is there a common dice roll used? I'm curious about pretty much anything to do with this topic. |

I believe that their changes in psychology are heavily affected by the mental state of the individual in question. Those who embrace the change will be more aggressive and display 'animalistic' traits that are sometimes mistaken for the state of being uncivilized. In D&D's case, just being a lycanthrope alters your natural form's physiology to a certain degree, which means that anything a hybrid-form werewolf is vulnerable to, you can also use to check their normal forms. Therefore, if you're a werewolf hunter, it's likely that you're paranoid upon encountering anyone displaying an abundance of baser instincts, such as a love of fresh kill, an overactive libido, or an obsession with their territory. That same hunter could also use substances like [redacted] on the natural form to see if the suspect displays an allergic or harmful reaction. Which substances in question work is redacted because I don't want to hand out OOC material to use against the lycanthrope population for free, but by the same token they have a few weaknesses that, if not well-known, are easily researched. Each 'flavor' also has a unique kryptonite as well, if I'm not mistaken. And finally, I think this should be under Lore, unless you're specifically asking whether you need the player's permission to check them for signs of lycanthropy. I would say 'no', but if it's a secret integral to their character, don't expect them to be obvious about it just because you ask or shove [redacted] into their face. |

Lycanthropes don't tend to hide themselves on this server. Most (not all, most) flaunt the fact of what they are. |

Amia has a very MMO attitude toward monsterous things, which generally involves unconditional acceptance. And if you don't accept them, you're viewed as a bad person. It's odd. |

Just stand next to a town guard. When he comments to a passerby, "You been sleeping with the hounds? You smell like a wet dog." Viola, you just bagged a lycanthrope. Wait, wrong game, nevermind.... |

Honestly, being one of those who plays a lycanthrope (and an afflicted one at that), I /try/ to keep it secret. Though, there is a group of folks who do know what he is, given past RP. It's more than I originally wanted, I'll admit, but I go where the RP is. However, I wouldn't agree with the unconditional acceptance of them. I really don't think people would view you as a bad person for being like that (at least I wouldn't). I /expect/ animosity towards monstrous creatures. I generally try to have my character carry a fair bit of that, myself. As for more identifying features, it's based around what people tend to RP out. Could be different colour eyes, similar to the eye colour of the lycanthrope side. Could be sharper teeth (this is more common). Those with the scent ability (which generally is just OTHER lycanthropes) could likely become familiar with the scent. It's generally up to the person playing the lycanthrope to show any notable changes to their features, so it varies from person to person. |

How do lycanthropes work on this server? I haven't seen talk of them before this thread. Is it a request thing that lets you get a shape changing widget, or is it just the RP of shifters, and any shifter can claim a lycanthrope background? |

Lycanthropes, natural or afflicted, require a request, yeah. A DM can likely weigh in on this, but I'm almost completely certain that shifters can't claim a lycanthrope background. But overall, it would involve getting the skin changer widgets for the animal and hybrid forms of the lycanthrope. The rest is left entirely up to RP, particular to whatever lycanthrope you are playing. A lot of that specific RP is also generally laid out in the request, however. You can probably look through the request forums to get an idea on a lycanthrope request. At least for those who weren't private message requests. Here is my own. Though, keep in mind that some things in the initial request were changed as it was discussed throughout the thread. Additionally, you don't get the lycanthrope racial traits, though some can just be RPed out (like the Scent ability and the weakness to silver). |

Having played two very different lycans, I’d say that yes there are ways to tell what they are. Even the ones who are “covert” have tells or hooks that would be indicative of being something other than “just” human anyways I’d say. I don’t think there’s really a way to be a lycan and look (or act) completely ‘normal’. I’d say that they would be influenced in their looks/actions depending on what type of lycan they are. Also if they’re Natural vs Afflicted, but there should be tells of some kind that lets you know they aren’t completely normal. I’d say that anyone who had a lot of experience with lycans would at least have a sneaking suspicion that something was “off”. For me personally, I like to think that lycans have a certain “scent” to them that animals/other lycans would be able to catch and know either something was “off’ or that they were a lycan. And yeah, it should be pretty easy to test to see if certain things affect them, no matter what form they’re in. I’m also all for monsters being treated like monsters and to some extent tend to do that with most of my characters. Of course their experience and general inclinations affect this, either leading them to be more or less tolerant of certain “monsters”. But I have no problem with monsters being seen as just that… monsters. |

Clearly, bobofwestoregonusa hasn't met Mala enough yet! That said... it is very hard to tell if someone is a lycan out of the blue. Hence why they make such good villains. It is true that in their "human" shape they can have features of the animal they are connected with but it usually is very subtle and mostly won't catch attention if there is not a suspicion already. Some however are more "animalistic" than others, that part is up to the player. A freshly inflicted lycan is likely the easier one to call out as their control is basically non existant. Once you have a solid suspicion, silver etc. is of course a fairly easy method to proof it. Though silver effects a few other creatures too. There's nothing easy like a detect lycan feat or spell though! At least not to the best of my knowledge. |
