Post subject:  Bard Question

So, doing some research, and I need some help in understanding Bardic Arcane Magic. According to 3.5 PHB. A bard needs to spend some time before the start of the day playing his music, sigining his songs, and so on to call forth spells from the weave into his memory.

Now- When he's casting these spells, does this bard have to forfill the same spellcasting componate requirements as listed in the spell?

For example in the case of the Alarm Spell. Does the Bard need to recite the verbal words of magic, make the jestures he needs with his hands, and focus component?

Quote:
Alarm

a point in space

Spell Resistance: No

Is your question essentially "Does a bard need to provide the verbal, somatic and/or material components of a spell at the time the spell is cast?" If so, the answer is yes. If that's not the question, could you clarify it some more?

That is my question. So they need to have one hand free to make the motions, be able to speak the words.

In P&P yes, on NWN that's unenforceable. The rule is a bit dodgy in P&P too actually (see: two-handed instruments?

Right, but i think the accutaly act of playing music or performing is bard's method of preparing there songs. The equivlent to this would be a wizard studying from spell book, or sorcerer meditating. This is when they pick there spells.

Though when they are in combat. They aren't playing there instrament. They are accutally invoking the words of magic, and making the hand gestures to involk the spells from the weave.

At lest that is my understanding. If not please correct.

Bards and sorcerers don't pick their spells per day. They're spontaneous casters, meaning they don't need to prepare spells each morning (or whenever they rest). They always have the same spells which are automatically ready for use after they rest. I'm not really sure why the source-book would say they need to do something to prepare spells. Could you give me a page number for this or quote the exact section so I can work out what it's trying to say?

Well, by P&P sorcs need to spend 15 minutes after they rest meditating to regain their spells, bards spend the time singing etc while concentrating (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicOverview ... rsAndBards). They don't pick spells in this period, they just gain the blank spell slots which they use to cast spells, much like sorcerer.

In combat, the only stipulation I could find is "Every bard spell has a verbal component (singing, reciting, or music)" (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/bard.htm (under "Spells"). So that means yeah no Silent spells, and spells without verbal components would subsequently gain one. Otherwise, yeah, exactly the same as other arcane casters.

Oh yes, here it is in the Player's Handbook (page 179) too;

"A sorcerer or bard needs 8 hours of rest (just like a wizard), after which he spends 15 minutes concentrating. (A bard must sing, recite, or play an instrument of some kind while concentrating.) During this period, the sorcerer or bard readies his mind to cast his daily allotment of spells. Without such a period to refresh himself, the character does not regain the spell slots he used up the day before."

So then as Serbiris says, they just regain their spell-slots this way as opposed to choosing specific spells for the day. Interesting!

EDIT: This is also the same in the 3.0 Player's Handbook (page 156).

Bards don't always play music while casting a spell, only if the spell specifies it. They also need the same spell components and spell focuses.

There are certain PRCs, such as the Spellsinger where you can prepare spells that you can release as spellsongs by burning a bard song and higher level spell. That way you don't need spell focuses or material components, you just have to be able to sing.

Bardic magic was a lot more interesting when it was it's own thing, separate from other arcane casting. I can't find the source now, but im some previous edition a bards magic and music were entwined together, you couldn't have one without the other. Now they just get their bard song (though Amia adds to that), and some sorcerer and rogue stuff. I've never been a fan of the 'streamlining' of the game.

You're confusing D&D with some other game as in 1rst and 2nd edition Bardic spellcasting was part of the class' "bards pick up a little bit of everything from everyone" idiom. Bards were touted as picking up magic from wizards - using the same mechanics, memorizing spells from a mages' spellbook, and doing the same gestures, speaking the same gibberish, and using the same props necessary.

Things went off the rails in 3rd edition when they were made spontaneous casters with no rhyme, reason, or explanation. (The usual problem 3rd ed suffers, poor writing when it comes to lore and setting).
