It's been a while

I have a quick question regarding Dominate Monster. What does it actually do when used on other player characters?

I understand what it does mechanically: daze for five or six rounds, followed by the debuff for a longer duration. But is it also *supposed* to actually take control of that character, in which case appropriate role play is encouraged? (Due to an understandable lack of mechanics)?

Or do the mechanics of the spell also completely define it's use when used on other characters, and it is never meant to be taken as anything more than a short daze and a long debuff?

Fairly straightforward. If just the mechanical spell is cast it does exactly whats happening mechanically. Everything else runs accordingly to the general pnp-rules.

(Ninja-Edit: As in regards to the server rulels for pnp and the way the spell works in pnp of course)

I'm sorry, it's not very straightforward to me.

Does that mean when you cast the spell, you decide whether you want to cast it mechanically or cast it via pnp?

Does pnp generally require the consent of other players?

EDIT: I think I answered my own question, but I want to make sure.

If there is a DM around, and the DM supervises the pnp version of the spell, player consent is not required.

If there is no DM around, player consent is required.

Or, does in fact a DM need to be around to utilize the pnp version of the spell at all, player consent or not? (as per what I suspect the usual guidelines of using pnp spells are)

What happens when it hits a PC happens. It dazes them for a while.

IF anything else is to happen, pnp rules apply I.E. concent is needed.
Same applies to any other abilities that does one thing ingame but something else in pnp.

But does a DM not have to be around even if player consent is given? Just trying to see whether or not a DM is required regardless.

-Edit: And thank you. I think I got it now, not just for this spell but for any/all pnp things which the game does NOT handle mechanically.

DMs do not have to be around for every instance of a pnp spell cast. In absence of a dm however, the permission of ALL present/affected players is required.
There are some that can only be cast under dm supervision, these and some other information can be found here: viewtopic.php?p=1398571#p1398571
