| Post subject: | Fey Lore - Cold Iron |
I had to read on feys a bit and researched when I went through Saya's quest. I still read stuff, actually. Today, however, I have seen something that made me very confused. This thread is me trying to get answers, other players' opinion on the lore, and perhaps try and have the Amian lore clear when it comes to Cold Iron. My goal is not to throw players in the open and judge them, so I will leave names out of it. --- Situation: Saya seeks council on how to approach one of her friends carrying cold iron. She doesn't want to be close to cold iron, and she cannot consider herself being friend with someone who does. She then gets told by a fey "It's fine as long as it's not used against you" and then by someone nearby "Look, I have cold iron, my lover is fey and she's fine with it". Apparently, "it's the user that makes the difference". --- Everything I've read on feys and cold iron can be summed like this -- 1 ) They do not want to be anywhere close to cold iron 2 ) They won't respect or think highly of someone who carries cold iron 3 ) Cold iron is far more damaging to them than just "Baaah, steel can hurt anyone and everything" Here are some quotes taken from the forum: Quote: Cold Iron: The much-storied death at the touch of cold iron for faeries is true to a point. A dagger or an iron spike in your pocket is enough to deter any fey who might consider interrupting your sleep. Open scissors tied above a baby's crib (points and blades directed up and away) is threatening enough to hold fey at bay. I doubt a baby is dangerous, nor is a watch, so the claims mentioned in the situation are all contradicted by this very quote. Quote: All fey are susceptible to cold iron. They will not willingly touch it, and if they are forced to do so, they receive a -4 penalty to all actions while they remain in contact with it. Any damage reductions they receive are bypassed by attacks from cold iron. In addition, fey may acquire additional weaknesses over the ages, as they change cycles. This one here confirms that it isn't just "some damage resist piercing", it's far more than just that. Something else I read (but I cannot find the actual quote at the moment) was that a fey who knew someone was carrying cold iron would get them to took poorly and badly of that person. They would lose their respect for them. If I find the source, I'll edit the thread.. I recall reading it, I just can't find where at the moment. What is up here? I roleplayed Saya the way I read she should be roleplayed, I think, which is why I am incredibly confused at what was said to me there. Anyone has lore or information that could help with making this clear? Roleplaying Saya the way I did was, to me, not by choice but instead just following what I thought was expected of a fey character. If I am told "Yeah, screw lore, cold iron is almost a non factor to feys, it's just something that passes through their DR" then at least I'll know I can react and roleplay differently. What I read (on this very forum or elsewhere) all led me to believe that cold iron was like "THE SUPER FEY BANE". If it's just a minor nuisance on Amia, it'd be nice to make it clear. |

I answered this before. 1. Fey do not like cold iron because the TOUCH hurts them. 2. They can consider flaunting cold iron at them as a threat because of that. It is nothing like a cruzifix for a vampire. Looking at cold iron does not hurt them. It just annoys them because they know it could be used to hurt them. Also not all fey are vulnerable to cold iron. Some are specifically not. Like Redcaps. They even use cold iron boots to hurt and piss off other fey. It is similar to silver and lycans. The touch pains (doesn't kill) so they do not like it. They also do not like being taunted by it. But the mere presence does not hurt them. Depending on the fey and how sensible or aggressive (emotionally) they are they might just consider it a threat because it could potentially hurt them. |

"A dagger or an iron spike in your pocket is enough to deter any fey who might consider interrupting your sleep" This quote does not suggest the watch or dagger is seen or flaunted at them (it's in a pocket). Thanks for the reply! |

It is only on touch. It may be because they might accidentally touch it when trying to get to you, or you can pull it if one gets close. A lot of the posts were also "supersticious believes". As by all lore, and Amia lore also, cold iron only hurts fey on touch. If they see it, they try to stay away from it, because they know it does. Aka it gives a bonus vs fey on weapons. And that is what it does. It hurts more on touch. |

P.S. How each fey(touched) reacts to the mere presence is up to you. That is your RP and you can do however you wish there. They may be upset by it. It may anger them. They may chose to ignore it. That is a matter of personality for each character. Like some fey can get seriously upset and angry, like in that plot that was running not long ago, and consider it a taunt or challenge or threat. Others may chose to ignore the presence and just acknowledge it could be a potential threat at some point (or not). Again others may say something and ask for its removal. Others may just walk away. Just like it is different how lycans react to the knowledge of someone possessing a silver weapon. An aggressive lycan might see it a threat and get upset. A good or neutral one might just acknowledge the fact that not all lycans are "good" and that silver also is effective against demons. |

[quote="Mushidoz"] What about this line though? "A dagger or an iron spike in your pocket is enough to deter any fey who might consider interrupting your sleep" /quote] That quote is from a 3rd party splat book and as per usual with all of these should be taken with a good chunk of salt. TL;DR, it isn't. Outside of having the potential of hurting them and in result them disliking it (with certain exceptions Amarice already brought up), cold iron has no further properties or effect on fey. Some, like my Lunar Ravagers who's first, second and third reaction to a perceived insult is to get the battle axe out and collect heads will react rather violently to cold iron while a full blooded powerful ancient sidhe lord will either ignore it outright or turn you into a tree or something because you were wasting his time. |

Quote: Here are some quotes taken from the forum: Quote: Cold Iron: The much-storied death at the touch of cold iron for faeries is true to a point. A dagger or an iron spike in your pocket is enough to deter any fey who might consider interrupting your sleep. Open scissors tied above a baby's crib (points and blades directed up and away) is threatening enough to hold fey at bay. This is talking about a bane, not just cold iron in general. If you read the whole thing when they speak of banes they are extra weakness an individual fey may develop from past events and experiences thus your first example is an individual bane. Quote: Banes With fey interests being so naturally mercurial, it is hard to say exactly what will or will not prevent them from entering an area or doing something. Still, like garlic against vampires, many things evoke natural revulsions from the fey. Other things could be more individual due to events of the past; some fey might hate all dwarves if a dwarf once tricked their ruler out of a treasure. Unlike the lures above, fey rarely become aware of a bane until they are close enough to note its presence with mundane senses. There are also a few noted substances useful for spells against the fey. these are extra depending on the fey, Not all fey have lures or banes And at the end of it it also states it must be notices by mundane senses meaning fey don’t have some magical sense to know when someone has their bane around them. This one here confirms that it isn't just "some damage resist piercing", it's far more than just that. not being able to touch it is correct, but it isn't more then that it literally says any damage reduction they receive is bypassed by cold iron in your quote. The extra weaknesses are something that only a full fey worries about cause it depends on their Host |
